It's not like Drifters was particularly good for that either. Drifters fell into the same pit that 9/10 anime with "brilliant leaders" fall into: team Nobunaga only looked good because every single opponent they fought were a bunch of incompetent retards whose battle plan consisted of "rush the enemy blindly head-on where they can be conveniently slaughtered in great numbers by the simplest of plans". And that was before Nobunaga introduces an overwhelming technological advantage.
And most adaptations of manga or LNs tend to stop before the plot develops out of that early period so that the opponents stop being cakewalks.

i watched it since some folks were talking about it over on the discord and i was really surprised by how great it was
i haven't read the original novel so i had no idea where the story would go, and it was one of the most engaging and captivating anime i've seen in recent years thanks to that
unique artstyle, great story about space aristocrats, fantastic music and sound design, top tier shit overall

Fuck me Youjo Senki has been as massive surprise for me. I pretty much dismissed it because of the artstyle but man i was fucken wrong to. I hope the light novels are up in english somewhere, since i know they stretch far ahead of what the anime will adapt.
