Also, I think part of it is that there aren't enough capable mages to make tanks futile. So when mages aren't around to provide fire support, its just the typical warfare we'd expect, where a tank fits on the battlefield.

I'd like to read those.
My guess is because a large portion of a mage's spellbook is basically explosions of various sizes. Shockwaves are really good at shaking buildings and limbs into tiny chunks, not so good at penetrating armour.
Conversely, a tank against a mage is basically trying to hit a fly with a hammer.

But don't they typically destroy bunkers and shit? Worst case scenario, they could carry bombs over the tanks.
This period has anti tank rifles (cause tank armour isn't that great) why not give that to a mage, since they amplify their weapons so much.
MC could pretty much take a country on alone if she would pray a little more, I'm sure she doesn't go all out so that they don't use her that way.

That's why I think the anime makes the mages looks way stronger than they are lol.
Also mages are very limited in number so even if they can I don't think they would risk going above the enemy troop just to destroy some tanks.
The rifle that mages use aren't actually guns, but gun-shaped staffs(the correct term is orbs iirc) and they are very, very expensive to produce, and I think only the imperial army to have multi-core orbs as a experimental weapon.
