Yeah, despite the out of context memes, the spoilers haven't been that bad. The only ones I caught turned out to be wrong anyway.
Finally seen IW and finally read through everything I've missed since then! I loved it, and I was the only one there which was amazing too.
In the French sub (dunno if the dub is the same, but it likely is), Tony actually refers to him as Voldemort.
I think he calls him that somewhere else, too?
On the ship.
on the spanish sub at least he gets to call him "calamardo"(the spanish version of squidward)
I just realized something they might be doing.
You know how the Infinity Gems are all combined with other items from the comics?
I think the Soul Gem and its pocket dimension soulworld are being combined with the Realm of Death, and Mistress Dead is actually housed within it, and she's the one who spoke with Thanos at the end of the movie in the Realm of Death.
Honestly, Death could totally fulfill an Adam Warlock-esque role in the sequel, in the same way they had Ebony Maw play the part of Mephisto and Banner stand in for the Silver Surfer.
The idea that half of the universe population needs to go due to finite resources doesn't make much sense
Infinity War is one of the only movies I don't have any fun nitpicking, but god yeah, the idea of killing half the universe to preserve resources is flimsy at best. Heaps of people here have probably seen this parroted around but, at least on Earth, killing half the population might stabilize (if you can call half the planet dying stable lol) things for about 40 years. Then we, and presumably everyone else, is right back where we started.
I mean, Thanos IS crazy. Dude has a cabal of "children" who worship him like a god, he tortures children he kidnaps from planets he's genocided, and he threw Gamora off a cliff for a cool rock. He doesn't have exactly the best track record when it comes to being a stable, rational person.
But at least in the comics, he has that whole rationale of doing it for Death, right? Lacking that initial motivation, he comes off as too stupid insane when he would have had to ignore a very easily identifiable fault in his grand cosmic scheme.
The Punisher series was okay. Might watch season 2. Outside of this and Daredevil I don't really give a shit about the Netflix shows anymore. Too many filler episodes, weak B plots and, in this show's case, weird editing. Seriously, they were doing some borderline experimental shit to try and hide the fact that the directors they hired don't know how to shoot a gunfight. Embarrassing. And the NSA stuff was lame in the beginning, despite me liking the characters.
It's not gonna change, but Netflix needs to step up their shit with these shows. Go from 14 episodes to 10 and hire some stronger writers and directors. Or better yet, stop replacing the ones that know what they're doing.
It's two sides of the same coin. Because whereas MCU Thanos has "lol dude just make lots of corn, it's so obvious" , the Death-Worshipping Thanos from the comics has "lol dude she's clearly not into you at all, it's so obvious".
Also, what are the odds that they get their shot at Thanos in the sequel by tricking him into going back in time (with the Gauntlet already completed) and doing the snap in the past, so that way he can save Gamora (since future Thanos already has the Soul Stone) without sacrificing his mission? Like, tempt him with the idea of having his cake and eating it too, just so they can go back with him to a time when Strange still has the Eye of Agamotto and can take them through the time stream to gather up everyone they need to launch a final assault? Imagine them going up against a full-power Thanos, only now Thor has TWO hammers and there are fucking FOUR Ant-People running around.
On the one hand, I'd like to see it because it'd be a great evolution for the character, it's a good way to retire Chris Evans from the role, and I'd like to see more Bucky and Falcon buddy-teaming. On the other hand, I also like the idea of him remaining as White Wolf and helping out in Wakanda.
I kind of wish the Marvel Netflix series would start becoming movies instead. That way they can narrow down their essential plot points and presumably get a better budget to execute it.
As much as i liked it and how Thanos still works despite it, the comic book motivation of Death itself deeming there be an inbalance and ordering Thanos bring balance works a little more smoothly since its a personified metaphysical concept ordering him.
Though the motivation still originates from the plotline, i believe a Silver Surfer tie-in, but i forget if that was just Thanos posturizing on Deaths motivation or actually the reason for Death ordering Thanos to do it. Also important to note is that in the comics Death wants Thanos to essentially just go around culling life at all times, NOT do the fingersnap, presumably because of the exact logical flaw with killing half the universe to stop the over-consumption of resources (and also because its a beta orbiter move and Death wants a chad conquerer to please her).
Agents of SHIELD
Thanos name drop!
I also wish they'd just straight up give up and admit the Netflix shows aren't really connected to the MCU and that they're just Marvel based series. Yeah, they say "What happened in Avengers set the criminal underworld for Daredevil............." which was just so unnecessary. You don't need Loki destroying Manhattan to convince me there's crime in Hell's Kitchen. The intro to Spiderman: Homecoming did a much better job of portraying what happens on a smaller scale due to the Chitauri invasion, because it actually connects to it rather than saying it does.
I'm okay with them all being their own, independent universes. They already don't actually connect to the MCU at all, so just say they don't. I can't watch the movies and the shows and believe that both events in both instances just... Don't matter to each other.
See, tying the two together would be a REALLY smart move once they get their own streaming service up and running. It makes perfect sense why Daredevil isn't helping fight Thanos, but a Spider-Man movie where they team up to fight Kingpin (only for the Punisher to make things difficult) would be a great way to help sell the multi-format aspects of the MCU.
but my only gripe with the crossovers is that the focus ends being the interactions between the heroes and not their development.
They'd definitely need to approach it in a "how can these two characters grow and benefit from being together" kind of way, rather than just a "WOAH LOOK THEY'RE HANGING OUT TOGETHER" kind of way.
That's why Avengers 1 still only works as a fun spectacle, why Age of Ultron is trash aside from the party scene and the Ultron/Vision confrontation at the end, and why Infinity War's best moment is the part where Rocket Raccoon puts aside his usual defensive bravado for a second to help Thor put aside HIS usual defensive bravado and process his grief in a formative, healthy way.
Might be just me but I felt some jokes in infinity war fell flat, or too forced it ends up cringy.
Especially the starlord ones
thats pretty much the joke. starlord being an insecure childish motherfucker compared to everything else.
I'm disappointed that Star Lord gets gloved at the end because it means that he's absent for the next movie and thus doesn't get to acknowledge and try to make up for the fact that he pretty much ruined everything with his anger and was an incredibly immature fuck.
What did you think of Ragnarok, though, with how they handled Thor and Hulk there?
If anything GoG 3 still has to deal with Adam, right?
I feel like the abundance of jokes (specifically with the "get serious and then undermine it with a gag" formula) kinda hurt the more serious moments like Odin and the Warriors 3 getting offed. Infinity War really makes Ragnarok better in hindsight, I've found, since Ragnarok ends up laying the groundwork for all the development Thor ends up getting in IW.
I did really like the interactions between Thor and Hulk though, especially when Thor is kinda forced to be the responsible big brother when Hulk just wants to sit on Sakaar and fight/eat/fuck for the rest of his days. It's always fun to see a character confronted with a caricature of their former self, especially after they've gone through the kind of radical changes Thor has in the MCU.
he's literally announced in the post credit scenes of GoG2.
"Embarassing" is a word that sums up a lot of the serialized Marvel stuff for me. Electra and Zombie Ninja stuff (I know it's in the source material, but boy did it suck in the shows), like 80% of Jessica Jones; The Runaways I couldn't even finish the second episode.
And Thor was announced in Iron Man 2 but didn't have anything to do with Iron Man 3. I'm thinking maybe he shows up in Avengers 4.
