I honestly couldn't care less about how they are going to portray MJ
Honestly, it feels half-assed, since [sp]having her be Not!Mary Jane just comes off like they were too scared to actually commit and racebend her. You can racebend characters and have it work; case-in-point, Michael Clarke Duncan in Daredevil. But you have to make sure that one, it's a talented actor, and two, that you don't come off as too scared to pull it off. It's just gonna make things feel weird in hindsight when we look back on this movie years from now after they've inevitably introduced Mary Jane Watson as a character.
"This is my original Spider-Love Interest, her name is MJ too but she's black or maybe latina, I'm not entirely sure, please do not steal."[/sp]
And the thing about [sp]Aunt May finding out COULD work, but not in a "he's totally open with her about his crime fighting" way. It's far too soon for that and I'm hoping we get a follow-up where he immediately waves it off as being a cosplay or Halloween costume. Aunt May can know that he's Spider-Man, but Peter can't know that she knows. Because then it takes that interesting "teenagers hiding shit from their parents/unspoken understanding" kinda thing and turns it into Batman and Alfred, where she's cleaning his tights and making corny excuses for him and whatnot. I'd like ONE MCU hero to actually have a secret identity, it's like the most basic superhero trope and removing that detail from Spider-Man of all characters kills a lot of the tension and conflict that Peter carries, compared to someone like Tony Stark.[/sp]

One of the things I like most about Spider-Man is how, even when he wins, he still loses. Yeah, he saved the day, but he was late for dinner and now everyone's disappointed in him and thinks he's a flake. It makes the times when he ACTUALLY wins all the more powerful, and [sp]giving him a totally open identity for his friends and family completely kills that major side of the character.[/sp]
I would mostly agree with you except for the [sp] Peters Parkers suck donkey butt/Spider-Man is teh |33+s!!!1111[/sp]
That shit is old and tired and frankly worn the fuck out. I realize it should be there simply because we're starting again, but fuck; it's tired, let it die already, his character is bigger and more human than that.
tbh I don't expect Marvel to ever go all the way in something potentially controversial in their films. They will always play it safe
and there are many ways to create tension and conflict without relying on a secret identity plot which doesn't make sense to me given the current position of the MCU

I can agree that, after 5 movies of "AW FUCK I GOTTA FIGHT KANGAROO AND GET MILK FOR MY POOR OLD AUNT, MR AZIZ IS GONNA FLIP", shit's pretty tired, but all the same, that's what teenage Peter Parker is. He's a character for all the kids and teenagers to look at and go "see, he gets it, no one else understands that I've got my own important shit to focus on MOM". When Spider-Man saves the city but still gets chewed out for flunking an exam he didn't study for, it's super easy for highschool kids to relate to that. Responsibility is some tricky shit to balance.
But then you can have him get older and marry MJ and it's less a question of "how am I gonna keep my secret life as Spider-Man hidden from my family" and more a question of "how am I gonna have a family of my own when I have to go punch Hypno-Hustler every weekend".
Honestly, they should have just taken all their inspiration from the Spectacular cartoon from the mid-2000's, that's possibly the only Spider-Man adaptation where the character/high school drama was at times way more interesting and engaging than the superhero action bits.

The most we're gonna get in terms of controversy is some stunt-casting or Mandarin-style twists, aside from when Feige inevitably renegs on his whole "no R-rated MCU stuff" thing. They know what sells and there's literally no reason for them to do anything but what's profitable at this point. Which is really the only thing that could sink the MCU; creative stagnation.
http://comicbook.com/marvel/2017/06/24/tom-holland-venom-marvel-cinematic-universe-/
"Everyone's asking this question, man. It's never happening," Holland said of Venom popping up in one of his future movies. He does, however, have an interesting perspective on future villains for Spider-Man movies, which promise to be a trilogy with the actor. "There are so many. I'm so excited to explore new villains. I want to see people we haven't seen before because Spider-Man, of all characters, probably has the most villains and it only makes sense to explore new ones."
So it looks like the spinoffs may be like the TV series and just never talked about. Or there's still time to change it.
That sucks though I was hoping for a symbiote takeover as a phase in the MCU.
spider-man homecoming spoilers:
My thoughts [sp] on Michelle being nicknamed MJ. I don't really have an opinion of it. She was always just a red haired girl as her like most identifiable feature. I never really read the comics and I'm sure they've made her do a lot more in them. I don't even think Peter will get with Michelle in the MCU. I just don't see their relationship as being a couple, more then close friends.
I do think Zendaya will be a great addition to the movie
Betty Brandt is one of the kids in the movie and I think that may be who they set up as the high school love interest for future movies.
and several reviewers are saying there's an innocence to this film that no other MCU movie has. Which is going to be cool to see [/sp]
Venom is such a character though. Probably the most iconic Marvel villain ever. He deserves better ;(
[editline]25th June 2017[/editline]
Maybe not the most iconic but he's one of the most
Venom has been done before in film though. I'm happy that Homecoming is using a Spiderman villain that's never been on the big screen before. I hope this trend continues throughout the trilogy.
I just hope they rethink their current villain formula. "Pissy and greedy dude with shallow development and lame motivations creates a tech costume/item to attend to his own funneral at the end of the film".
Zemo was a step in the right direction

Hopefully they don't start off with a "small time villain" at the beginning that hasn't much, if any, affect on the plot of the rest of the film either, though that seems to be more a staple of Captain America films
Honestly, I don't see why they couldn't do Venom. He gets the black suit as an aside after the tech of the Stark suit is damaged in Infinity War, then Spider-Man 2 does the whole alien costume storyline; either condense it down so he ditches the costume by the end of the first act/midway through act 2 or end it on a cliffhanger where Venom is set up for a solo movie or Spider-Man 3.
And then he could make his own suit, and it'd be this beautiful symbolic thing about how Pete came into his own as a hero, refusing to let anyone define him (coincidentally, he'd be out of high school by then, marking a perfect tonal transition from "aw jeez I gotta save the world and get to class on time" Pete to the more mature, capable Pete we haven't seen done since the Raimi movies).
Throw the Sinister 6 somewhere in there and you're golden for the next half a decade.

It still kind of baffles me that I am as excited as I am to see The Vulture, of all villains, on the big screen.

If they can take lesser villains like that and turn them into something terrifying, at least terrifying in the previews, then they have the opportunity of using a lot more than the big name villains as the main antagonists in the films at their disposal.

Serious take, actor involved
I can't exactly complain on what villains they'll use for the movies, i think spidey has a varied and memorable rogue's gallery, and most of them would be perfect for the big screen
I saw somewhere that Mysterio and Kraven are in the works for future Spider-Man film villains. If that's true I'm freaking pumped. Love Mysterio.
Part of me kinda wants Black suit Spider-Man to come back. They could add Black Cat to help persuade Peter to be a bad guy and turn against the Avengers. It could be interesting

Uh, about that... it's actually Sony who is reportedly planning to use them, as stars of their own spinoff films.

FUUUUCK
Where the fuck is my Hobgoblin spin-off in which he attempts to build up his brand image with licensed promotional items?
I half expect Holland's comment to be a bluff. I wouldn't see why they wouldn't introduce the black suit during Avengers 3/4, to keep to the cosmic origins. Then he's running around with it in MCU Spider-man 2. They can keep to their tradition of not yet done villains by having the story revolve around him getting a job at the Bugle and introducing Eddie Brock as a crooked veteran photographer/reporter that already works there. Throw in Shocker as a recurring baddy. Over the course of the movie Pete's riding on black suit high and goes self-righteous to expose Brock and gets him fired as Spider-man. Jameson is upset and hires Scorpion to bring in/kill Spider-man (a reference to an earlier story done before). Scorpion scuffles with him a bit, poisons him with his stinger (obligatory tongue in cheek comment about being poisoned by his stinger's venom). Spidey beats him and realizes the suit is not normal and gets it removed at the end of the movie and the movie ends with the symbiote attaching to Brock as set up for the next film.
Seems like an obvious choice to me, phase 4 would make for an easy Symbiote/Cosmic Phase that could totally set up for Maximum Carnage/Symbiote Invasion as Avengers 5. That story had other heroes besides Spidey in it and fanboy glee of Venom and Carnage would be enough to get people hyped for an Avengers movie post-Thanos v:v:v
well spider-man 2 is after Infinity War pt2
and venom comes out next year so I don't think that timeline would work.
Production of Venom hasn't started yet though, so maybe Marvel/Disney can work something out before it actually starts to get creative control over all of Spider-man's characters.
A symbiote Invasion would an amazing phase arc post Thanos.
Looks like Kevin Feige wants Spider-man 2 to kick off Phase 4 in a major way
http://io9.gizmodo.com/the-next-spider-man-film-will-be-the-civil-war-of-marve-1796402155
“So much happens in [the 3rd and 4th Avengers movies], as you can imagine, and so much is affected by it that we felt what better person to hold your hand and lead you into the next incarnation of the MCU, in a grounded, realistic manner, than Peter Parker?” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told io9. “So, coming out two months after Untitled Avengers, [that’s what] much of what the next Spider-Man film will be about.”
“It was purposefully done like this,” Feige continued. “Like how the events of Captain America: Civil War impacted Peter as he was dropped off by Tony and expected to go back to continue his sophomore year, how the hell are the events of Infinity War and Untitled [Avengers] going to affect him as he, yes, goes back to his junior year?”
“Much like, as we went into Homecoming, we knew all the general pillars, you then need the magic of the writers and directors to bring it all to life,” Feige said. “So we’re in that same position and we’ll actually start putting pen to paper on the next Spider-Man film in the coming weeks once this film is finally released. But we do know the specifics and the time line.”
In a perfect world the Emoji movie will screw over Sony's future plans and they will retract Spinoff Spiderverse to allow for Symbiote Invasion arc, it would just seem natural. :v:
Sony really is betting all on Emoji succeeding and I SO wish they'd crash and burn so marvel can swoop in and stop the travesty of any shit that company can fart out.
2016 taught me several times that I shouldn't get hyped to witness the failure of something I hate, because it'll just end up thriving instead.
That said, I'm definitely hoping that Disney/Marvel can pull some sort of plan out of nowhere and make everyone (except perhaps Sony) happy.

What if Sony sells it to some other company?
God help us if, say, Fox bought the rights to Spiderman instead

At least we would get a Spiderman and Deadpool team up in that scenario.

I'm sure Ike would be pleased.
All this talk about Spidey villains and I'm just holding out hope that some day we'll see the undead/vampires in the MCU with Blade.
Blade would be their perfect first R rated film if they ever choose to make one, I mean it's going to happen eventfully right?
