I didn't say it happened instantaneously. It was a very gradual process. But by season five it's pretty clear that there is supposed to be no question in your mind that about the only redeeming quality Walt has left is [sp]his reluctance to kill family. NOT killing someone is about the most morally responsible decision he's made.[/sp]

Like I understand rooting for the bad guy. Bad guys are cool. Darth Vader is cool. I like Walt, as a villain. I've got a poster of him. But trying to act like they're not a bad guy is silly. and having one or two positive qualities doesn't make him "not good or bad" either. Not every bad person has to be baby-raping Hitler. This show has a marvelous history of moral ambiguity, yes. But in Walt's case, he evolved from antihero to villain
it's still hard to look at him and think "wow what an awful person" (when he isn't doing all the evil shit) because we know his history as a good guy. i like to think that if someone with no knowledge of breaking bad could look at a new ep and think "wow he's so cruel is he the bad guy (even if he is pretty cool)"
i also like to imagine what random people think when they see him, with the shades and the heisenberg hat. i think some people would see him and think "whoa whos that he looks like a rapist", completely oblivious to the truth of his past
It's good to have perspective but that doesn't change what he's doing now, you can apply the same argument to most real life cases of "bad guys".
I mean I still have empathy for him. But he's a cock, also. It's a weird relationship. That's why it's great.
I just feel like if you explain away and justify everything he does you're really missing out on that love-to-hate relationship this show does so well.
