Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven (2000)
Post-rock
8/10
I've listened to this piece a few times, but this was the first time I listened to it back to back.
Beautiful textures and dynamics, wonderfully curated emotions through swells and crescendos, quiet interludes that create atmosphere and lay foundations for the next grandiose movement, which usually involves several guitars, horns, strings and synths. Wonderful instrumental album, very accessible as far as post-rock/drone/noise records go. Listened to it while walking through a derelict soviet industrial neighborhood, amazing soundtrack for the architecture.

Doom/Shoegaze (2014)
Fav Songs: The Silver Woman, The Funeral Mountains, Epilogue (Block out the sun)
It's an album with a weird, albeit very enjoyable pacing. You get this weird feeling that it is trying to build up to something, but you don't quite know when is it going to boil over. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.
Rich drums and no overreliance on fuzzy wall of sounds, with clean male/female vocals and some more guturals used to emphasize certain stretches. All that comes together to help the album not feel tiring or boring.
Rating: 4 "listen this if you like doom/gaze"-s out of 5.

Slowdive - Slowdive - 2017
Genre: Shoegaze, Dream Pop
Favorite Songs: Slomo, No Longer Making Time
Listen on Pitchfork: http://pitchfork.com/news/73300-listen-to-slowdives-new-self-titled-album/
Slowdive are one of my favorite artists, helping pioneer much of dreampop and shoegaze in the 90s. This new self-titled album still has their signature style of mellow vocals and hazy guitars, but with a more modern feel. Best shoegaze comeback so far.

Death Grips - Jenny Death
my first Death Grips album. think it's fucking great. on GP is my favourite track, found it at a difficult time in my life so I can really appreciate the whole "moment of peace in the midst of madness" thing it has going on.
Not a big fan of the final track "death grips 2.0", think on GP was a great ending point, however with these boys I'm expecting it to be some tongue in cheek pisstake so

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Flying Microtonal Banana (2017)
Garage Rock, Acid Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Progressive Rock
Currently one of my favorites of theirs, rivaling I'm in your Mind Fuzz (2014). I would write a proper review but fuck it.

Coughs - Bent Babies (2003)
Noise
All of them except Track 09, that shit really breaks the momentum.
I NEVER thought I'd find an album more hectic than Soul Discharge. Holy FUCK this album surpasses that so much that I have to bring Soul Discharge down to a 7, maybe an 8. I'll need to listen to it some more after this.
9/10. This is the fucking shit.

I always interpreted Death Grips 2.0 as DG leaving behind their humanity. Ride is nowhere to be heard (except for 1/10th of a second as the track begins), the drums are sampled, it's like a machine has replaced Death Grips. Good album, it has the best soundscape of all the DG albums I've heard.

That shit took me a year to digest because I couldn't handle the sudden mood shift from the triumphant fanfare of LYSFLATH and the change to Gathering Storm. That said, it's extremely accessible indeed, everybody should give it a gander at least once.
Depeche Mode - Violator - 6.5/10

Its alright, I felt as while the synth-pop melodies were executed quite well, the cheesy, dated songwriting seemed a bit much and distracted from the overall experience. I feel as if it really restricts itself into making too many indistinguishable songs as well. As many felt very similar to one another, almost to a fault. Despite this it still was a catchy and enjoyable experience overall.

Earth - Hibernaculum (2007)
Post-Rock, Drone
As I understand it, the album is a re-imagining of some of their older works, dropping their signature sound of heaviness and thick tones and replacing it with more of a post-rock style. It's really chill and relaxing, and despite it having a couple ~moderately~ length tracks, it goes by fairly quickly just because of how atmospheric and calm it is -- yeah, it's only 36 minutes, but that can feel like an eternity if the music is boring and un-engaging (though "post-rock" and "boring" are synonyms to some people).
If you want something to chill out to, I definitely recommend this album. Just don't go in expecting some classic drone metal/stoner Earth.

The Incredible String Band - The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter (1968)
Psychedelic Folk
With a run time of about 50 minutes, I had the expectation in my mind that this would succumb to one of the all-too-common negative traits of psychedelic albums from this era: overstaying its welcome by being too self-indulgent, aimless, and frankly, kind of dull for what's supposed to be a psychedelic experience. Maybe that doesn't matter to you when you're actually dropping acid -- I wouldn't know, so my perspective is purely from the outside.
The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter doesn't really encounter those same pitfalls. In fact, it weaves around them almost effortlessly. Despite all the different themes that the lyrics explore, the array of different instruments (ten of which are played by Robin Williamson alone, and a further five by Mike Heron) and influences, and the whimsical atmosphere of it all, it manages to keep me engaged most of the way through. On top of that, Fairport Convention provides backing vocals on "Minotaur's Song", which was another pleasant surprise.
Definitely surpassed my expectations. Reminds me of Van Morrison's album Astral Weeks, except more structured and layered, but less soulful. A good listen, all in all, though I'll have to listen to it again to make my final score go higher.

Sunny Day Real Estate - How It Feels to Be Something On (1998)
Genre: Alternative/indie
This was a bit of a surprise. Sunny Day Real Estate's first two albums, Diary and LP2, are a couple emo classics and favorites of mine, with the former often being considered to be the beginning of what's now recognized as second-wave emo. Having been so successful with that formula for two albums, I had pictured How It Feels to Be Something On to be the one that really doubles down on it. Gets even meaner. Channels that angst and anguish into something that delivers an even harder gut punch than its predecessors.
What I got, as it turns out, was much different from what I had anticipated. The band still took an artistic turn here, but in a completely inverse direction: now they've done away with the emotive, anthemic vocals and quiet-to-loud dynamics that characterized their earlier works for something quieter, and perhaps more mature. Jeremy Enigk ditches his yells and shrieks from Diary for something softer, more melodic, and far more varied than before, with accompanying lyrics that seem to be less about feelings and more about abstract concepts. His -- and Dan Hoerner's -- guitar work almost abandons chords completely in favor of scales and arpeggios. Jeff Palmer's bass playing emerges more prominent and interesting, rather than just being a backing instrument. And overall, the songs show a new level of technical complexity, sometimes almost bordering on progressive rock at times.
Ultimately, I'm not yet sure if I prefer this over Diary, since tonight was only my first listen. But I feel like it absolutely has the potential to be my favorite SDRE release with future listens.
8/10, and I expect that number to go up

Michael Jackson - Thriller (1982)
Pop, Contemporary R&B
I hate to say it, but it's kind of overrated.
• "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" is a great opener and a fantastic pop song. Great mood setter.
• "Baby Be Mine" is good, not amazing, but it's a good track. Don't have much to say about it.
• "The Girl Is Mine" is god awful. What the fuck were they thinking? This track alone brings the rest of the album down.
• "Thriller" is alright. Never got the hype about this one. It's just really gimmicky and not something I can casually listen to.
• "Beat It" is fantastic. The guitar is killer, the beat is great, it's basically perfect.
• "Billie Jean" is the perfect pop song. The best thing MJ ever did. It's just perfect. It's groovy, it's feelsy, it has everything.
• "Human Nature", "P.Y.T." and "The Lady in My Life" are all alright, but end the album terribly. Basically 13 minutes of coming down from the climax. It's a bit of a letdown.
Overall a good record, but not amazing.
