I didn't know there were so many classical music fans here. Glad to see you guys! Here's something nice...
No-one knows about Milhaud and it saddens me to no end
hit me with some oriental classical compositions.
You've probably heard this by now but I love the Butterfly Lovers concerto. The version with Takako Nishizaki on violin is considered to be the best but the only version on youtube has been slowed down.
Not heard it, definitely read about it though I need to find a good version of it. Thanks for reminding me.
Anyone here a fan of Rimsky-Korsakov? Scheherazade is the bomb, based off Arabian Nights. Third movement is awesome, one of the most emotional pieces I've ever heard:
I'm sorry but this piece still elicits the most emotional response from me, there are words I want to say about it that don't exist
I've been listening to a lot more organ music lately and took a stab at writing some. It can be extremely calming and especially good for late nights. If you have access to a pipe organ or some good organ samples, playing it has a wonderfully meditative effect as well. First time visiting this thread, don't know if this has been posted yet or not. Either way, this is my country's most well known composer, and one of his most well known pieces. It's a fantastic piece of work, the third movement in particular.
My favorite Grieg piece: Learned it on piano too. God that fucking B major seventh oh my god.
Have some Vaughan Williams
Love raiding the M&B: Napoleonic Wars music folder :v:
I'm a huge fan of Vivaldi and Rossini, Italian composers seem to be in my range of taste. Progression is a huge part of his music and I love it. The story continues, but it keeps like a few remnants of the beginning of the song to make it all wrapped up in it's own little pocket of the universe.
Kissin sure does this piece justice! Some Liszt... Love Yundi's performance: And of course Rach's 2nd piano concerto (I haven't checked wether any of these have been posted before but some most likely have).
Need some modern classical: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSOj9CZJQOE Adam's Lament was only released last year and it's very good (might have even been this year) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FK-KC2aQpcI Great composer
this is.... surreal, never heard a piano piece like it.
listening to: the only classical album to move my soul in a while. Not even hehr mozart can do that. :(
Better to bump this thread than to make a new one I guess. It's been quite a while. I guess I'll kickstart by listing some composers. Im currently listening to many Russian and French composers, as well as other European ones, so here's a list of the general selection: Rachmanninoff, Ravel, Liszt, Chopin, Debussy, Scriabin, Shostakovich, Blumenfeld, Lourié, Alkan, Lyapunov, Balakirev, Gershwin, Glinka, Prokofiev, Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Mendelssohn. They all offer different styles which are all great. I've also gotten into brass composers such as Herbert Howells, Phillip Sparke, Eric Ball, Goff Richards and George Llyod. Just thought I'd spam composers if anyones interested in one you should enjoy some of the others. I thoroughly recommend listening to Rach's variations on a theme by pagannini (I really like var 19) and Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit for some wonderful virtuosity. Here's a selection of pieces from my very favourite composers:

any love for schoenberg?
Really getting into Scriabin this week and some Ravel. Ravel's string quartet is near perfect. He apparently worked vigorously to refine it as far as he could. It's similar to Rach's 2nd concerto where you couldn't remove any part of it without taking away from it; every bar and note has a purpose. The best part is the second movement for me @ 7:42. so i took a look at the nomations for best classical stuff for the next grammy awards this is a pretty chill piece

Skip to 33m 23s for some epicness. I wish more people posted in here, though I guess it isn't a very popular genre on here.
a lot of threads seem to have gotten a little lost in the shuffle
I'm boring, I only listen to the common composers, and I only play the even more common ones. Anyone else here plays the piano?
Why is it that Prokofiev's 2nd Symphony is so disliked compared to his other ones, it happens to be my favorite It's so full of raw energy. Also I wish that Béla Bartók composed more pieces such as his Dance Suite, it's a great piece of music
I'm boring, I only listen to the common composers, and I only play the even more common ones. Anyone else here plays the piano?
Yeah I've been playing for a while. Go through phases where I practice tons but usually don't have much of an opportunity to -- do you have similar issues with motivation/opportunities to practice? I hope to play more next year when I get a proper flat outside student accommodation. Can't tackle anything too complex at the moment other than pieces at the level of Chopin's op9 no1 nocturne or Debussy's suite bergamasque.
Also I wish that Béla Bartók composed more pieces such as his Dance Suite, it's a great piece of music
Excellent piece. I'll have to have a look at more of Bartók's stuff in future.
