Matt and Trey have never been afraid to admit that making South park is a living hell. You can listen to the episode commentaries on the DVDs/Youtube, and they often talk about how a lot of episodes are last second and how stressful it is. Woodland Critter Christmas is an excellent example of last minute brilliance.

They're being forced to this until their contract ends, it's not their fault and you can see that they are still trying, so no, that would not be the worst thing to do to the fanbase.
