James Franco in this movie reminds me of [sp]Drew Barrymore in Scream[/sp]
Yeah, between Guy Pierce and Franco, is this series going to be known as the one where they hire named actors to not even really be in the movie?
I like it when they do it, because it's so unexpected.
http://www.avpgalaxy.net/2017/05/22/new-behind-scenes-stills-alien-covenant-official-collectors-edition/ Interesting to see they even made a xenomorph and neomorph suit, but in the end they make it all cgi, reminds me of The Thing (2011).
Nah, there was at least one shot of the neomorph that was practical. [sp]When the second one was outside the necropolis, you could tell that it was a person. It was kind of jarring[/sp]
It took some reading, but even to this day it amazes me that 2011's The Thing was almost a really good movie. If only. [editline]24th May 2017[/editline] Could you please be just a bit more specific as to when this was? I heard there was exactly one practical shot but it was for the xenomorph, not the neomorph.
[sp]It was after the group had moved into the Necropolis and met David, I think right around the time Walter and him had their chat. Anyway, there's an exterior shot where you see the neomorph scurrying around outside.[/sp] It's the second picture in the article, actually.

Apparently Alien Covenant's ticket sales fell a massive 71% for it's second weekend, and it had the 2nd biggest drop for a film playing in over 3,700 theaters. The only reason it's not first is because of the incredibly front-loaded harry potter finale. Overall it's looking to be on track to make almost half as much money as Prometheus did, despite finally having ALIEN in the title. Pretty surprising tbh and again makes me wonder if Fox is really gonna still commit to financing all these supposed sequels Ridley won't shut up about, or if they're just gonna fade away like Blomkamp's Alien sequel did.
At this point I would prefer the Blomkamp's Alien sequel
I just got back from seeing it, it was okay. Not Prometheus levels of bad but it lacked any real level of tension. Best parts where [sp]the birth of the neomorphs and David taking control of covenant[/sp]
Apparently Alien Covenant's ticket sales fell a massive 71% for it's second weekend, and it had the 2nd biggest drop for a film playing in over 3,700 theaters. I almost can't wait until it implodes in on it self from lack of originality.
You know, I didn't mind Prometheus. I actually think it's a lot better than Covenant was. I just feel the ideas and themes these two movies try and explore, revolving around the creation of man and the dynamic of characters like Walter and David are fundamentally incompatible with a 'good' alien movie, which are conventions the franchise will always be shackled to. I don't claim to know Ridley's thought process when it comes to writing, but I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted a whole lot less alien in both of those movies, but had to include some due to producer demands or whatever. On the topic of Covenant, I really do think the best parts of the movie were [sp] David and Walter. I would have watched an entire movie without any xenos running around about David playing mindgames on a stranded crew. [/sp]
Prometheus had some dumb stuff in it, much has been said, but what isnt often said is that a lot of the audience was too fucking dumb to get the film anyway. Note that most of the criticisms of prometheus focus on obsessive nerdisms about biologists and WHY ISNT HE WEARING A HELMET LOL, the sort of nitpicking that these same people do not do with any other incredibly stupid film simply because they enjoyed the film. John Wick is full of stupid implausible shit, but nobody bats an eye because they understand it and enjoy it. Batman is... hopefully you get the point. Prometheus suffered because audiences wanted aliens 5. Ridley wanted to move on from the overplayed and now borderline comical franchise into fresh territory and do something interesting. The end result is studios sure as shit arent going to let him play again until he gives them what they want which is also aliens 5. Well you got it, and surprise its very mediocre and quite a bit stupid. You could smell the studio stink on this one a mile off, several scenes in the film felt like a checklist of beats some execs placed as a demand on Ridley before they'd trust him with another film, like including ripley-lite and a completely obvious retread of scenes from Aliens that will no doubt be taken as homages by most but actually feel like the cinematic equivalent of Scott yawning disdainfully. Sadly, it also feels like Scott has been forced into a corner. The narrative had to continue on from Prometheus in some manner, but at the same time, this is clearly not the film he wanted to make as opposed to the studio holding a gun to his head and saying "put the fucking alien in cunt". So the loose ends are tied up in unsatisfying and stupid manners that feel patch-work because they are patch-work. So i have no idea what he plans to do for these prospective sequels, nothing good of it can come at this point.
That's not nitpicking if it's BASIC LOGIC in a film. Those are serious problems that make LESS sense in Deleted scenes.
WHY ISNT HE WEARING A HELMET LOL
They're going on a scientific expedition to another planet. Any scientist from any field knows that when you're exploring something completely unknown, there's a chance that anything can kill you. Shit, we wear protective clothing on our planet when we're not sure of something. So no, it's not nitpicking when characters lack common sense. I wouldn't take my helmet off on a planet where i wouldn't know if creatures or plants would or would not kill me.
Prometheus suffered because audiences wanted aliens 5.
I keep seeing this be said; even Scott himself said it, but I have yet to actually see anyone with this opinion. I would feel like the average audience wouldn't even realize Prometheus had anything to do with the Alien series. Now if that's the conclusion the execs came too because they're execs, that I can believe.
Prometheus is both connected and not connected at complete fucking random. It's a mess because there are overt references... but then they tried so hard to have random things changed to not really relate at all and be its own thing.
Stupid question but since movies like Covenant are prequels, how come Walter is able to re-develop his skin? Shouldn't every android in the future (Alien 1-4) have this ability? Or will they find an explanation that it was taken out of androids in the future?

Ash had his head ripped off and Bishop was ripped in half, so maybe the technology can only repair minor injuries. After all, Walter couldn't regrow his missing hand. We don't know how he died either, other than David using a knife. Maybe he was decapitated and couldn't recover.[/sp]
on second viewing, there is a LOT cut from this film and its quite jarring... almost all of the "promotional" material are scenes that have obviously been removed from the film, and the film suffers a great deal because of lacking these scenes which serve good purpose, such as establishing a relationship with the crew. at 2 hours and 3 minutes, the film is already quite long, but its long where it doesn't need to be and short where it needs to be long. I dare say there is about 15 minutes that needs to be cut from the cinematic release and about 20 minutes of the promotional material that needs to be put back in.
Just finished the Alien: Isolation game. Best thing to come out of this franchise in quite a while that doesn't have vs. in the title. The very last bit of the ending was a bit of a let down, but the whole game just oozes atmosphere.
