FX's "The Americans" ★ All's fair in love and cold war

Brutal. Disgustingly violent and peaceful at the same time. Methodical. That show has managed in a basically sixty seconds scene portray the bestiality of communist regime. From the first moments you knew what was going to happen and it still took you by surprise, amazingly done.
Reminded me a lot about ending scene in Wajda's Katyn. Same methods.

[sp]Nina's sudden execution and funeral... RIP :'/[/sp]
[sp]Martha is about to get "suicided" by Philip, calling it NOW.[/sp]

[sp]And I suspect Oleg is going to defect, specially after what happened to Nina.[/sp]

I've been doing some reading on the subreddit and some guys found that the consultants made sure [sp]Nina's execution happened as accurately as how the Soviet regime performed executions, so what we've seen was practically how they did it. Holy shit. Major props to the directors of this show for being stone-cold and not pussy-footing around it.[/sp]
Also, I'm not familiar with that movie... I'll be sure to check it out!
Completely offtopic

After seeing how serious she is on The Americans, seeing Keri Russell singing and dancing feels pretty weird :v:
[sp]For a moment, I thought Elizabeth was gonna stab Martha, right there in the park[/sp]
great episode. don't really know where the climax of this season is heading towards, but it has definetly got me on board.
[sp]Elizabeth took the EST talk the wrong way... she's going berserk :P[/sp]
I finally caught up with the show again
[sp]i was sure martha would die, because phillip gave her ice from the same freezer as the disease sample[/sp]
What Oleg mentioned [sp]after banging Icant'rememberhername[/sp], is Stanislav Petrov's incident in '83, that prevented an all-out war.
Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov (Russian: Станисла́в Евгра́фович Петро́в; born 1939 in Vladivostok) is a retired lieutenant colonel of the Soviet Air Defence Forces.
On September 26, 1983, just three weeks after the Soviet military had shot down Korean Air Lines Flight 007, Petrov was the duty officer at the command center for the Oko nuclear early-warning system when the system reported that a missile, followed by another one and then up to five more, were being launched from the United States. Petrov judged the report to be a false alarm, and his decision is credited with having prevented an erroneous retaliatory nuclear attack on the United States and its NATO allies that could have resulted in large-scale nuclear war. Investigation later confirmed that the satellite warning system had indeed malfunctioned.
He literally (in every sense of the word) saved the world from WWIII. Read all about it, we've never been *that close* to complete nuclear annihilation, the man is a hero.
It's amazing they included this tidbit in the show, makes me love it even more!
On 26 September 1983, the nuclear early warning system of the Soviet Union twice reported the launch of American Minuteman Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles from bases in the United States. These missile attack warnings were correctly identified as a false alarm by Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov, an officer of the Soviet Air Defence Forces. This decision is seen as having prevented a retaliatory nuclear attack based on erroneous data on the United States and its NATO allies, which would have likely resulted in nuclear war and the deaths of hundreds of millions of people. Investigation of the satellite warning system later confirmed that the system had malfunctioned.
And previously Vasili Arkhipov back in '62, during the Cuban Missile crisis.
On October 27, 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, a group of eleven United States Navy destroyers and the aircraft carrier USS Randolph trapped a nuclear-armed Soviet Foxtrot class submarine B-59 near Cuba and started dropping practice depth charges, explosives intended to force the submarine to come to the surface for identification. Allegedly, the captain of the submarine, Valentin Grigorievitch Savitsky, believing that a war might already have started, prepared to launch a retaliatory nuclear-tipped torpedo. Three officers on board the submarine — Savitsky, the Political Officer Ivan Semonovich Maslennikov, and the Second in command Arkhipov — were authorized to launch the torpedo if they agreed unanimously in favor of doing so. An argument broke out among the three, in which only Arkhipov was against the launch, eventually persuading Savitsky to surface the submarine and await orders from Moscow. The nuclear warfare which presumably would have ensued was thus averted.
2 Russian officers, in the span of 20 years, saved the world.

Highly relevant, the documentary "1983: The Brink of Apocalypse".

[sp]Fuckin' Alice... pastor wives are the worst[/sp]
[sp]Looks like Paige got a glimpse of what her mom can really do... and now wants to know A LOT MORE about the whole thing.[/sp]
am I the only one finding this season kind of... underwhelming? Not that this is a spectacle, fast paced show by any means, but the other ones were much more intriguing. This one is just moving at a glacial pace, not much has happened at all.

Oh come on, man... [sp]they offed Nina in the most brutal (and realistic) way possible, Martha is out of the picture, and agent Gaad is dead. Now they're closing in on William, it's slow-paced, but pretty damn interesting![/sp]

you got a point, maybe I'm just not used to following series week by week.
Damn good season. The finale felt like it was 10 minutes shorter, there was no cliffhanger like in the previous seasons, but I thoroughly enjoyed this season too.
And now... we wait.

FINALLY! Fuck yea
While I love Margo Martindale to her death, her nom is really undeserved. Frank Langella or Alison Wright were snubbed and Lev Gorn, Richard Thomas and Dylan Baker deserved it more than her for their stellar work this season.

I finally got 'round to watching this movie about a month ago. It felt more like one of those Hallmark straight-to-tv miniseries than a movie, but it was still really good.
I binged watched this show for around two or three weeks in September, it has a wonderful Breaking Bad style pull to it that just drags you in. I really love the shades of grey in this show as opposed to simply being simply being one singalong of "America Fuck Yeah". I hope they [sp]cover the Gorbachev era as I'm intrigued as to how Elizabeth would react to seeing the system she so believes in rot away but I don't think we will get that far[/sp]

New teaser added to the OP.

[sp]Holy shit, Paige... you're going waaaay over your head! listen to your mom[/sp]
[sp]Holy balls Paige... you're being wayyyy too melodramatic[/sp]

[sp]Holy balls, Paige is going all in, practicing her moves and all. Definitely a second gen spy.[/sp]
[sp]And WHOA Tuan, you're such a cunt! Poor Pasha![/sp]
Well... season's over. All in all, I feel that it was a rather dull and nothing particularly important happened, so in a way I feel that this whole season was mostly filler for whatever comes up next on S06.
Well I got around to watching season 5, I have to admit that I think this show as a whole is bordering on infinitely watchable for me. Just get dragged into it so easily.
I'm watching this show right now.
[sp]Nina's death was really fucking brutal, seriously. I was in shock for a good hour.[/sp]
So I've had the latest season settle in now, does anyone now think that like Walter White [sp]Phillip And Elizabeth are now beyond the point of no return? I'm surprisingly neutral on the whole thing, they've just been raised in effect by this terrible communist system and now they are going to perish for it but their killing of people is just totally unjustifiable[/sp]
Bumping this thread because the first episode of season 6 aired and it was pretty damn good.
Lots of great set ups for the rest of the season.
[sp]If Philip actually ends up spying on Elizabeth, it's going to be absolutely crazy.[/sp]
Finally finished S6 and tbh, finale was really underwhelming for me.
