• The Orville - New "Star Trek" like Show by Seth Macfarlane

Having read around quite a few star trek fan-forums and so on, it's fascinating how many people feel the way I do. This show just gives me the kind of warm fuzzy feelings I get from watching stargate, 90's trek, and even the old doctor who seasons; it scratches that nostalgia itch whilst looking like a TNG spin-off and dealing with some of the same issues (albeit with a comedic twist). I think it helps too that they have a veteran star trek writer at the helm as well. I find it kind of ironic how this feels more like star trek than the new official star trek to me, and it's even worse considering I can watch this for free on television whilst I have to pay CBS directly to give me my STD
Only watched 7 minutes so far of the first episode, it actually makes me sad how Trek this feels. It looks a lot like TNG but modernized. Even the little cuts and views of the ship are exactly what any of the Trek shows do.
after finally catching the second and fourth episodes I'm actually pretty happy with where the show is going. the critics seemed to fixate on the pilot and the third episode but they wholy ignored all the great trek that happened in the second episode and then the fourth episode dropped and was pretty dang good, i would hope they don't rip off trek episodes everyday but the personal and cultural interactions which star trek always had a horrible time with are seth McFarlane's strengths which seems to blend well most of the time (the few dumb family guy esque jokes asside)
Been watching Orville, and It just fits together so much better then rescent star trek has. My flatmate and I were also worried it would go all Family Guy and try to get the humour from "uhoh stupid captain leaned on the self destruct button!" dumbness, but no. Everyone is competent at their jobs, the humour comes from the human moments in between.
the jokes aren't that constant either, it feels like there's 3/4 shitty jokes across a whole episode like they're just trying to fill some joke quota :v:, barely feels like i'm watching a comedy, much less a Macfarlane comedy
the jokes feel like they were put in to trick the fox executives to greenlight a star trek show
"macfarlane comedy" is the magic word to have Fox automatically greenlight your show :v: i mean they sure love spamming their channels with family guy clones, how many clones of that show are there now? 3?
Is there a new episode tonight? What does it air?
Wikipedia says there is one tonight. Directed by Johnathan Frakes.
New episode was absolutely great, awesome concept that they pulled off pretty well. [sp] The future alien design looked surprisingly 'cool' at the end. [/sp] Hate to say it yet again but it was pretty easy to forget I wasn't watching a TNG episode. The humour was much better this episode too, and it's not just because it was sparse. Now that I'm familiar with the characters a lot more jokes are landing and [sp] Isaac fucking amputating a leg as a practical joke and hiding it in the only guest room on the ship actually got a chuckle out of me. [/sp] I'm still not sure if I'd call the show truly funny but the humour is becoming less jarring, which makes the rest easier to watch.
I've recently been trying to get into Star Trek myself, starting with TNG. I actually found the first two seasons to be really mediocre and almost gave up on it, but thankfully season 3 is turning out to be quite a bit better. Anyway, I've been hearing about this show and finally decided to check it out, if nothing else just to see how it compares. I have to say I'm fairly impressed with it so far, every episode has been somewhere between solid and pretty good. I actually like the lighthearted, comedic approach to sci-fi. It's good to see that 25th century humanity in this show isn't some super advanced society that considers themselves to be the model of moral superiority, they're just normal people who like to crack jokes and occasionally get drunk. Kinda refreshing compared to Trek, which tends to get its head stuck a bit too far up its ass at times. On the other hand, the execution of the humor isn't always great. They tend to take jokes that weren't that great to begin with and run them into the ground by stretching them out for far too long. Or even worse, they've ruined a few perfectly good jokes by explaining them after the fact, that was completely unnecessary. Then there's some rather serious moments that get cheapened by pasting low-brow humor all over them. I definitely prefer quality over quantity when it comes to jokes, they're really gonna have to work on the timing and cut down on dumb jokes if they want the comedy to mesh well with the story. That being said, the last two episodes definitely showed some improvement when it comes to this, I especially found the whole situation with [sp]the pranks and the leg amputation[/sp] to be really funny and well thought out. If they keep going on like this, they're definitely on the right track.
WTF I love Seth Mcfarlane now.
So, I was able to watch Episode 5 now that it's on FoxOnDemand. And holy canoley. That was a hella intense episode. It was really fantastic. I also really love the character dynamics that are going on, I think it really shined in this episode.
Yes the first two seasons of TNG are really bad. Ditto with later Trek. Somehow Orville is avoiding that curse. [editline]6th October 2017[/editline] Critics hate Orville though. And love STD for some reason.
I think that slime guy is probably the annoying example of Mcfarlane inserting a little too much of his humor. I think that "Non-human character acting like very generic, vaguely jerkish average human" gag is really worn out.

That is the single character in this show that I really just don't care for. I suppose the silver lining to it is that character has basically zero screen time, so it's bearable.
Never watched any Star Trek but damn, this show is pretty good. Only watched the first two episoded and I actually really like it. The humor can be pretty ''meh'' sometimes but It doesn't ruin the show for me.

No one else notice the running gag? [sp]can you open this jar of pickles[/sp]
No one else notice the running gag? [sp]can you open this jar of pickles[/sp]
At some point, I'm expecting him to ask her to open an actual jar of pickles and her not being able to do it.
The leg joke got me pretty good tbh
Seth is confident The Orville will get a second season already https://www.digitaltrends.com/movies/the-orville-nycc2017-news/
No one else notice the running gag? [sp]can you open this jar of pickles[/sp]
When he said it the second time I thought it was just a joke that they forgot they'd already used in the pilot.
Man I really hope this gets a second season.
Did Alara grow eyebrows between episode 1 and 2?
No one else notice the running gag? [sp]can you open this jar of pickles[/sp]
how could anyone not notice can you even call this a running gag, it's just using the same joke over and over
That's usually what a running gag is yes
Did Alara grow eyebrows between episode 1 and 2?
Yeah, she's had some slight makeup changes, something to do with the actor having problems with the makeup, I honestly didn't notice it until someone pointed it out and I much prefer the eyebrows, let's the actor be more expressive.

"we could do c list then" [editline]12th October 2017[/editline]
Did Alara grow eyebrows between episode 1 and 2?
probably, the pilot was shot almost a year before the production began
probably, the pilot was shot almost a year before the production began
A whole year?? Wow, I had no idea. Why was that? Had to pitch a completed pilot to get a season approval or something?
