there's some good thoughts in there. the biggest point about the orville's comedy is definitely the 'get out of jail free card' not only in terms of production quality but also the topics and storylines they can cover the reddit social media planet is a good example. the concept is just too silly for a 'serious' show. it might have been acceptable in TOS or TNG but modern audiences would reject such a cheesy concept. but under the guise of 'comedy' they get you to accept the idea, then actually pull out a really good serious story with actual social commentary after they've hung a lampshade on it
I'm just glad no one was home for that episode, I can explain away GoT sex scenes but that was uhhh
I thought I would hate Orville, but it really is good, feels like TNG with some comedy.
So I guess it turns out [sp] that The Orville can do horror pretty well too.[/sp]
Did anyone pay attention to the score of this episode? Some really good star trek like scores in this series. [editline]17th November 2017[/editline]
So I guess it turns out [sp] that The Orville can do horror pretty well too.[/sp]
"what could TNG do with CGI" this
Sheesh, why didn't they air that episode at Halloween
Fuck me this show is so good. I LOVED this episode... I'm so happy it's got a second season renewal. It's a bit disheartening when you look at the quotes under the 'Reception' part of Wikipedia and it's basically everyone taking a dump on the show. Like how is this 21% on rotten tomatoes? Are we even watching the same show as these idiots?! At least the user scores are through the roof, I sure hope that carries sway with the higher ups but knowing FOX... eek. It took me a whole week just to drum up the care factor to sit through the latest Discovery ep (which admittedly wasn't all that bad bar the typical moan worthy writing and such), but I couldn't wait to watch Orville this week, it's so refreshing and fun.
That last episode reminded me of that TNG episode where [sp] Beverly was stuck in that pocket universe which kept getting smaller while the crew kept disappearing.[/sp]
Did anyone pay attention to the score of this episode? Some really good star trek like scores in this series.
I did notice it. The music that played when [sp]the clown appeared on the security logs[/sp] reminded me of music from TNG but I can't remember which episodes. Either way I haven't heard something like that in a while.

If I were young again I think this Orville ep would have a very similar effect on me haha.
That was an absolutely fantastic episode, very well done, some damn fine spooky scenes as well, best episode yet I'd say and OMG, Robert Picardo is Alaras father! Awesome stuff. Also, Bortus never fails to make me laugh, him in that french renaissance garb was fucking hilarious, or the joke with the alligator in the cargo bay, or the one about him being afraid of being conquered by a superior race, god damn hilarious.
Pretty massive spoilers Also, Bortus never fails to make me laugh, him in that french renaissance garb was fucking hilarious, or the joke with the alligator in the cargo bay, or the one about him being afraid of being conquered by a superior race, god damn hilarious.
I'd highly suggest spoiler-tagging all of this. I'm loving this show so far. I can't help but feel it's a copypaste job of TNG, and the ship design is abysmal (what tf is with those weird rings at the back of the ship? They just look so... alien), but the character design is imo really good, and the plots for each episode so far have been captivating to say the least.
Looking at that Robert Picardo shot, I wonder if they’re going to go back and upgrade Alara’s makeup. It seemed like her parents had a much higher quality job, especially on the ears.

Personally I'm loving the designs of the ships. Also from what I understand the show was pitched to CBS originally, I'm assuming with less comedy. But was turned down and repitched to Fox as a comedy. It's also mostly Trek alumni making I think?
I did notice it. The music that played when [sp]the clown appeared on the security logs[/sp] reminded me of music from TNG but I can't remember which episodes. Also errata on my statement with music relating to a romulan theme. It goes back all the way to the klingon theme from the original motion picture.
I've been avoiding spoilers but just reading a bit in this thread really got me curious and I decided to sit through a couple of episodes. I love it so far. By the third episode it really started giving me star trek vibes, in the sense that they play with norms and ideas - mind you I am too young to have grown up with star trek and have only gotten through almost the entire first season of the original series. [editline]29th November 2017[/editline] Also... Bill Nye The Cancer Guy???
well this episode started off flat
I thought the episode was pretty two dimensional
this latest episode was pretty damn great. if the finale for season 1 great as well then ill probably put The Orville up there with TNG which is the best Star Trek series.

Felt like they entered the Tron universe when they went into that 2-Dimensional plane. :v:
Felt like they entered the Tron universe when they went into that 2-Dimensional plane. :v:
I beleive it was based off of the look of Flatland in the 2007 film by the same name. EDIT: I mean this one specifically keep in mind it's like an hour and fourty minutes The movie called Flatland: The Movie is not this movie, even though it also came out in 2007, Flatland the Movie is a 30-ish minute long short. This one is much longer, And It's website no longer exists, and I can't find any existance of dvds or blurays of it.
The most recent episode was okay.
I swear there was an episode of Voyager just like that last episode.
I swear there was an episode of Voyager just like that last episode.
there was kind of. A planet that spun so fast that it's time went forward ridiculously fast. Though it was a bit different. Voyager itself was worshipped as a kind of, city of gods or something. They had unknowingly changed how the planet's civilization had evolved by just being in orbit of it. The Holographic doctor went down to the planet at a point, and came back later. [editline]8th December 2017[/editline] I feel the orville episode better explored how theology can shape a planet and culture
Also if you guys were wondering, this wasn't originally the finale, the finale was apparently moved forward one. So we get an extra episode next season.
I wonder if the original season finale was a cliffhanger. If so, it'll be funny to have a huge dramatic cliffhanger between two regular episodes.
Wait, that was the finale? I didn't even realise. Pretty cool episode, although surprisingly one of the most predictable so far... which is interesting because for a show that basically recycles old Star Trek ideas in a shiny new coat, being predictable is more or less the norm at this point. Still enjoyed it though, the visual effects were top notch, and the acting was fantastic.
so I guess disney now owns this show
so I guess disney now owns this show
No more latchcomb with Bortus :/
