I have a problem with this finale is that they left the planet unattended. Realistically, there would had been armada of ships there to protect and interact with the civilization. It would had leapfrogged their tech during the next shift back, then more and more and more. And then Orville's federation is fighting a war they might not win, so it would had been realistic to ask for help, ether through donation ships, tech, or being the head of peace talks. What bothers me is that you could of had a cliffhanger for a mcguffin planet being the tool to win the war.
The first episode has aired on Fox here in the UK, the humour isn't really my sort of thing but absolutely love the trek-ness of it all. Looking forward to watching more episodes.
The humor gets better.
The design of the quantum drive rings is based on how space warp would look like based off the Alcubierre drive model. Personally I'm loving the designs of the ships. Also from what I understand the show was pitched to CBS originally, I'm assuming with less comedy. But was turned down and repitched to Fox as a comedy. It's also mostly Trek alumni making I think?
I highly doubt mcfarlane would pitch the show to CBS, makers of all things Star Trek. But i could believe that fox might have insisted it be a comedy before greenlighting it
I love seeing Brannon Braga's name on the credits, the name I read for 7 years on TNG

It's whats makes the Orville all the more amazing to me, in that it was (presumably) turned down for Discovery but still manages to make its own place.

Third episode has confirmed my love for this show. The humour isn't always great but man I LOVE this show. It's so Trek yet it's something more. Admire Seth McFarlane and the cast and crew so much.
The second season has been pretty good so far, they managed to capture the spirit of TNG while being distinct and modern.
Yeah, I've been enjoying it this season, but it'd be nice if they laid off the romance and Mochlan plots for a little while.
Loving The Orville, they do seem to focus on the Mochlan and Bortus story line a lot. Though while I was watching a few weeks ago this part stood out to me. I was wondering if anyone else felt like it was familiar in some way. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/110057/72afb647-355f-4a6b-bb3a-0e4d3303015a/2019-02-18_12-31-14.webm I wasn't looking at the screen when this came on and it instantly reminded me of half life 2, it sounds very similar to Breen. Anyone else think so?
I kind of like how the Union's relationship with the Mochlan's are basically the same as the U.S and Saudi Arabia. For sure the show runners building some larger overreaching conflict that's going to spill over at some point. But yeah I think they need to layoff on the romance subplots a bit. Next episode is a two parter
I am impressed also by their dedication to always making sure there's aliens on the crew. In the "looking for Lokus" montage one of the security officers just randomly was made up with alien prosthetics, that guy that sold Bortus the VR porn several weeks ago had a big impressive alien suit, and Yaphit the CGI blob is often just in the background in engineering doing his thing.
This episode was a thriller. I kind of predicted that the robots would turn on them the second I asked myself where it is they came from. Now they are basically the borg it seems. The title of the episode is "Identity" so perhaps there is still hope yet for Isaac. I can't wait for the next episode.
Man, I know this show always feels like Star Trek but having it end like that and the words TO BE CONTINUED pop up was like the most Star Trek thing I've felt in a long time. I remember watching TNG and Voyager as a kid when they aired live and being so frustrated with having to wait to see how they'd get out of whatever situation the crew was in. This totally re-captured that feeling. Such a good Orville episode.
Seth's favourite cliff hanger in TNG was Best of Both Worlds, I think he was trying to go for that vibe. The Music was even very similar in tone. He even recreated it in Family Guy, with the composer of said music actually doing a really close soundalike.
I'm thinking the bones they found aren't actually from another species, they actually uploaded their brains and dumped their bodies underground and resent themselves so much for it they'll kill anyone who finds out.
That shot of the shuttle being chased looks just like the Enterprise being chased by a Borg cube.
Pretty decent conclusion to the two-parter. No real gimmicks or ass-pulls, just some desperate people making desperate plans. Also space battle!
Kaylon Primary is kind of hilarious. He tells Isaac to read a book about a black man suffering, then he tells him to kill a black kid.
I'm not particularly a fan of how one dimensional the rest of the Kaylon race seems. Other than that, great episode!
Issac could probably tell them anything they need to know. Unless he doesn’t know how his own race works.
It seems odd that the Kaylon were all united with Primary's mission, because it seems they are specifically NOT a hive mind, probably to prevent being controlled again. Also while "emotions saving the day" seems like the idea with Isaac, it could also be said that he decided to save the biological lifeforms because of the logical conclusion of his analysis, while the older Kaylon are the ones acting based on their emotions, from what they experienced in the rebellion. That might be an interesting way to subvert the trope, and could lead to some interesting developments, like perhaps a Kaylon civil war?
They could be like the Geth.
Now that I'm caught up, I wonder if the show will get to build on what happened in Identity in the same way that subplots have grown out of S1 like the relationship between Bortus & Clyden or Claire and Isaac. Between his personal involvement and the measures he suggests on what to do with Isaac, I wonder if Admiral Halsey's personal judgement has been affected by the events of Identity. Based on everything I've seen him in, Victor Garber has the kind of acting skill to portray the Admiral that way. If the writers do decide to go there though, I hope they leave his honour intact by the end of it. It's not that the direction wouldn't suit him, but Federation officers have turned completely evil or mad before to the surprise and disappointment of the audience and even whoever played them. Out of all the old ST concepts The Orville's worked magic on like with the above subplots, I think it'd be the hardest to get right for just that reason.
