These films are so much better than they have any right to be.
But they did make a standalone film? Also, funny you mention that, since in the article supposedly the idea has been thrown around to make it in two parts, consisting of Vol. 1-3 and Vol. 4-6
Yeah, there was the standalone film. But there's no point in just making that version again.
I don't know if reviews count, but as it stands the Ghost in the Shell movie is getting mixed reviews. Surprisingly, they range from average to good.
I'm just gonna take a few samples from the press. A review from an average movie goer who hasn't seen the original anime movie.

vs. a reviewer who HAS seen the original anime movie, loved it, and the sequels. This is the [sp]POSITIVE[/sp] one.
Fuck it, let's go full Shadow the Hedgehog edgy and make a Red Hood standalone.
To be honest, in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice is heavily implied that in the current DC Extended Universe Jason Todd was murdered by the Joker, so a Red Hood movie would be actually an interesting concept, provided they can portray him as a beliveable anti-hero.
Regarding the Batgirl idea, instead, I stopped reading around the "Joss Whedon" part
Chris Stuckmann liking Ghost in the Shell's adaptation blows my fucking mind tbh considering his love for the original.
I wasn't expecting it to be that high, but at the same time I wasn't expecting total shit. Granted he does say that the original's themes are leaps and bounds better than the "re-imagining", but the action and the acting is better than expected. When we were expecting this to end up like Dragonball: Evolution but instead we got something that could be compared to Warcraft; a faithful adaptation of the original to a degree, but still engaging enough to make you care about the main characters and/or how the story goes. We gotta keep in mind that there is a general audience to keep account of and the fact that the GitS creator doesn't mind Johansson playing The Major.
Death Note on the other hand looks...off with the exception of Ryuk. THAT I'm worried about.

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/ghost_in_the_shell_2017 average rating: 5.8/10
yea a fair few go lower than just 'average' lol. Overall pretty much where i figured it'd end up going by the director's last mediocre film.
Why can't adaptations of Anime go the way of Rurouni Kenshin?

It's a bit early to tell imo, so we got the whole 1st weekend to get more results. My plan for said weekend is to see this one with my friends who have seen the original, then watch the original myself and see what happens. Again, this is me being the optimistic one even after Dragonball.
I find it more than a little baffling that Chris says 'it's not a homerun' and 'dumbs a few things down quite a bit' but still gives it an A-.

maybe its because he's a bad reviewer since he has terrible taste?
Maybe he just watched it and liked it instead of complaining that muh american anime adaption stars white actors.
It kind of affects the story, especially near the end, though.
I dunno, I'm mostly avoiding it because it looks boring lol
This is coming from someone who has never seen GitS so I realize I can't say much. It very well could be more important than I thought, I just thought it was stupid that people had been complaining that American adaptations of anime starred white actors. People have been doing the same thing with Death Note.

Those are some skinny legs for an explorer.
The example that Stuckmann used with the Yuta video where he (Yuta) interviewed japanese people about the issue holds a lot of truth. I mean, look at anime and manga. They barely resemble asian people for the majority of works. One of the reasons why they are so popular among asians is exactly the western-like looks. Of course there are works that do resemble asians but GITS is one of those that barely resemble them when you look at the movies and their characters. Same with a lot of other works.
I never had any issue if a western actor/actress gets to play a role in a manga adaption because characters in anime and manga resemble western people more than eastern people.
Netflix will be doing its first R-rated animated film, about a revisionist history of America, with Channing Tatum voicing George Washington as the headliner. Matt Thompson is the director (Frisky Dingo, Sealab 2021, Archer), Dave Callaham is the writer (The Expendables, Godzilla 2014).

because that's the style? if a character had spiky blonde hair and blue eyes, but was a full-blooded japanese kid going to a japanese school that spoke japanese and had japanese parents, would you say he was a character from the west? they draw like that because it looks visually appealing (not to mention because it's drawn/animated, they have to define a character's traits through their visual appearance, which is why you can typically guess how a character acts and behaves based on what s/he looks like), not because they're trying to say "these characters are white/black/etc." hell, black people in manga/anime typically look exactly like the other characters, only with dark skin.
togusa looks the most "western" in the 1995 film, but he's the least-cybernetic person in section 9 who's also japanese.
either ways, i saw gits and i didn't like it. they tried to cram 2 movies and an entire t.v. season into 1 movie while also dumbing down a lot of the philosophical ideas.
I'm more worried that people are liking Boss Baby. I mean how many people are expecting that movie to be good?
I... uh am actually surprised that this movie isn't doing gangbusters.
It seems to be doing pretty well overseas, but not well enough I suppose
I'm more worried that people are liking Boss Baby. I mean how many people are expecting that movie to be good?
I'm more insulted that Boss Baby might make money over Ghost in the Shell honestly.

Jackson is a hack fraud (Hobbit movies), Jim Sterling is a cunt and undertale is a meme game
Mad Max and strangelove are all right
The new gits movie is terrible and stuckmann is either an idiot or a shill or both
People have their own opinions
Can we move on?
