Wanted to listen to Gorillaz for a while, but found out the hard way that the album I wanted to listen to (the one with Clint Eastwood) is brickwalled. I read somewhere that there's a fan mix made out of leaked original recordings, somewhat similar to RHCP's Californication - is there anything else? Maybe a later vinyl re-release?

So what is this Phase stuff about? Is there like a story/lore to Gorillaz?

The gist of it is that for each album, there has been a fair bit of backstory told through music videos and interactive website things. Each album has been a different phase in the story, with its own art style, theme and story. The first album was kind of sporadic as far as I know, Demon Days was about the direction the world and the economy was headed in and was fittingly dark and moody, and Plastic Beach (and The Fall) was about what we're doing to our planet and environment and had more of a modern sound with visuals that matched, moving on to more realistic and super vibrant visuals that made heavy use of 3D CGI. Phase 4 will be the story and art of the upcoming album. I don't know about you guys, But from all the phase 4 snippets Hewll has been coming out with for Phase 4, I think we'll be seeing the most experimental and artsy look the gang will take form from, Per example this. But it's more in your face about adding real props and making it look different, Also there's almost minimal to no outlines in his snippets.

I also see a lot of comic-y art, like that dot pattern you see sometimes in comic books, perfect for Jamie considering his background

So whats happening, is it finally time to get excited? Also, I tried to listen to the first album, (which I'd never listened to before) after listening to demon days and plastic beach and I really couldn't get into it, keep in mind that this is one hell of a 2nd rate /really uninformed opinion.

Quite a few Gorillaz songs are growers, you kinda have to listen to them enough for them to grow on you.
