Hah, it's already happening.
[sp]I could sworn I've seen that image before the movie hit theatres[/sp]
RLM is going to have a field day with this one for sure.
I really don't know how I feel about it. It was entertaining and all that but damn, the bad parts are REALLY bad.
Even Phantom Menace is a better movie than this. It is atleast audio-visually pleasing. The Last Jedi is the dullest Star Wars movie so far, and I'm including Attack of the Clones on the list.
Phantom Menace is the movie where a cartoon rabbit steps in the poopy and smells a space cow's farts. Ever single character in the movie is either a cardboard cutout, a terrible kid actor, or a thinly-veiled racial stereotype. I'll give you the audio (duel of the fates is still legit), but visually it's aged about as well as a camel turd:

There is no fucking way its a better film than the Last Jedi.
I'm seriously doubting the movie is as bad as some of you are saying. How can it be worse than the prequels when the prequels had basically nothing going for them apart from their art direction and soundtrack?
The new movie at least sounds like it nails most of its core characters (Rey, Kylo, Luke, Leia, Poe), even if much of the window dressing could have been cut. And the cIharacters were what made TFA so enjoyable for me, so I get the feeling I'm going to enjoy TLJ just fine.
Its not worse than the prequels or suchlike, but that doesn't mean it was a great movie, I would class it as average and inconsistent. I said it was garbage in my first post, but having had a few hours to reflect, I wouldn't say it was trash. But it definitely wasn't great in my book. There were [sp]too many annoying, deus ex machina moments, and way too much cringiness[/sp]. Not as good as Rogue One, for example.
That said, the effects were really, really great. I personally wouldn't rely on anyone's opinion or love for it as much as I wouldn't expect you to rely on my hate for it. It is what it is. I would watch it again for Mark Hamill's parts though. If any of you were of the opinion that his acting in the originals was wooden, well his acting in this is pretty damn good.
Saw this this morning, I enjoyed it but man you could have cut out 30 minutes of [sp]casino and toy marketing[/sp] and it would have been a lot better. It felt like 2 movies worth of content mashed into one movie. Not prequel level of bad but I expected something better, 7/10.
Other thoughts:
[sp]Leia's force magic scene and Snoke's death were funny as fuck to me.
Luke was a bit of a mopy little bitch, must take it from his father. I'm kind of annoyed we get shown the x-wing he has under the water but instead of flying to the ice planet he force projects himself. I think if he was physically there at the battle and he used the force that would have been a lot better. That being said after ghost Yoda tells him to harden the fuck up I really enjoyed Luke.
I can't even remember the new character's names, Asian girl and stutter hacker man?
The mentioned casino plot was pointless, it seemed like an elaborate excuse to get some kids on screen. and it didn't even end up helping in the end, just made some moral grey area bullshit that went nowhere.
I really liked the scene when the rebel ship jumped through Snooky's big one, that was done really well with some amazing visuals.
My Green Boi Yoda was great, just slapping some sense into Luke after he sulked about for a decade or two. Next movie I want to see force ghosts of Obi-wan, Yoda and Luke roasting Anikin while Rey and Kylo watch.[/sp]

Its interesting you say that. Would you consider Rogue One to be a better movie than The Force Awakens? Because I don't - not by a long shot. It had some of the best Star Wars action ever in the third act. Otherwise I feel it complete failed at what it attempted to do, which was to craft a memorable new set of characters that we would mourn when they all kicked the bucket. Thanks for nothing, Gareth Edwards.
Meanwhile, The Force Awakens had legitimately great new characters, and that made all the difference in the galaxy.
so can you people that didn't like it explain why without needing to use spoiler tags?
what other movies is it similar too?
I'll try to explain it the best I can without using spoilers.
The movie is seeded with moments/parts that bring you out of the story, that upset your immersion, or make you sort of blink in disbelief. Some of them pay off, but quite a few of them don't. Some of those moments are very clear setups for products, toys, etc. That's okay by me but product placement hurts a movie if it breaks immersion, which it does in some cases in this movie. So that's problem #1.
Second problem to me is that the movie is inconsistent. Some of the sideplots are really fantastic. Some of them...are not. The closest thing I can think of in this regard is the lord of the rings where I would always skip the parts with Sam & Frodo to get to the good bits.
Third problem to me is the personality of new characters. I...did not find that they wrote new characters in this movie well. Introducing important new characters is a calculated risk when you do it in the second movie of a trilogy, because you're asking audiences to invest in characters other than your main cast, 2 years after (in this case) the audience made their original investment - the pay off is that the new characters should have strong personalities, with clear but layered motivations. I didn't feel that payoff existed and as an audience member I was being told to emotionally invest in characters that just weren't really worth it.
The humour some people have had a problem with - I didn't really, but it was definitely hit and miss. I was in a crowded theater and there were some moments that were intended and played for humour and didn't get a single laugh. But there were some also that really got a cheer.
That sums up my main problems with the movie. That said, there were good parts. Like I said, the effects were great. The cinematography and sound, great. There's one CGI part that is absolutely to die for. Any bit with Mark Hamill in it was a treat, and Daisy Ridley's acting has really improved. So it's not all bad. I love a good space battle and they were great.
So that's about it without spoiler tags. Maybe I'll come around with some more reflection and think it was a good movie! But I left the cinema a bit underwhelmed I guess.
Please let me know if I should spoiler tag that but I deliberately didn't mention a single plot point, I guess the biggest spoiler is that there are new characters but like...thats not a spoiler more of a basic expectation of any movie

I'm not sure how I feel about the difference between the two. They both had their flaws. Force Awakens was a good movie, I really enjoyed it. People ragged on it for being too similar to a New Hope, which is a fair criticism to be made, but the formula was tried and true - I didn't mind it. Rogue One had a bit more originality to it which I guess draws the comparison to Last Jedi...I don't know. Force Awakens was probably better - I might walk back my statement on a rewatch of Rogue One.
This heated debate of "movie isn't great" VS "movie is great" makes me wish I could see it sooner and judge myself.

It's all over the fucking place, with great parts and very weak bits but ultimately enjoyable.
7+/10, I liked TFA slightly better even though it rehashed a lot and forcefed me nostalgia .
So what I'm seeing is TFA was too similar to Star Wars, TLJ is too different.
It felt like the best version of what the prequel movies could be, but ultimately no where near the best a star wars film should be. Way more jokes than I expected, felt like the writers giving pat's on their backs at points.
There is no fucking way its a better film than the Last Jedi.
When I said that it is more audio-visually more pleasing, I was talking about the environmental and costume design. The CGI has not aged well, but I would take Naboo Plains, Theed, Otoh Gunga, and Coruscant for example over yet another barren planet that The Last Jedi had. Phantom Menace is a very bad movie, but I always marvel at the world building that Lucas and his team did. The filmmakers have this huge galaxy and mythology at their disposal, and Rian Johnson decided to have The Last Jedi's finale happen at the most boring location that you could possibly imagine. Even the casino which was supposed to be the most exotic location in the movie did not feel or look like it belonged into Star Wars.
I realised that the whole [sp]casino plot is actually ultimately pointless. Their plan does nothing and goes nowhere, they could have just not left the ship in the first place and it would have had the same effect except without the awful casino scenes. You could physically cut the casino scenes and the scenes where they sneak on to the ship and it would be a better movie for it.
I've had some time to think about it and the movie isn't as bad as I initially thought, but hooo boy are the bad scenes bad.[/sp]
There's a really visually incredible scene in the movie that I think a lot of people will really love
interesting, I actually really liked it
I'll echo that the [sp]casino[/sp] scene was [sp]pretty stupid and unneccesary, and ~hackerman~ seemed like a pretty pointless addition,[/sp] but the more impactful and heartfelt scenes more than made up for the more goofy ones
I really appreciated the fact that I never knew exactly what was going to happen and where the plot was going - it had echos of ESB but didn't riff off it more than necessary. maybe that made for a messier movie but I'll take that over a shallow, predictable snore-fest like rogue one any day
overall 8/10, it didn't hit all the bases I was hoping for but it was never going to match every single person's expectations, left me actually interested to see where episode 9 goes

Great new characters? Hahaha, are we watching the same movies?
Saw it 12 hours ago, I don't really know what to think.
So far this is not the magical feeling I want after watching a brand new Star Wars movie, nor the feeling I got from TFA.
I don't feel the same excitement for IX that I felt for VIII after TFA ended, and it sucks.
seems cool that a movie is really polarizing apparently.
[sp]So at the end of the movie Kylo Ren becomes the Supreme Leader of the First Order and is off to become the big bad of the whole new trilogy, while Snoke was apparently just a red herring[/sp].
... Alright then. It's not like I have many hopes left about this movie or anything.
I wonder if the focus groups Disney used to help write the plot get credited.
I went to the midnight release and really enjoyed it and thought it was a really good film. My only negative point to raise is pretty much the same as everyone elses:
[sp]The casino planet was boring and pointless. I was just like please stop and get on with it already. I felt Luke's ending was a bit anti climactic for such a character as well.[/sp]
[sp]I liked the Reya/Ben connection thing, especially after Snek was dead and they had a moment again, even if it progressed a bit too fast, as well as the whole Ben's betrayal of Snek. The whole Reya/Ben/Snek scene was great, aside from the force dragging of Reya which looked a bit odd. I was also disappointed that Reya betrayed Ben instead of teaming up with him. She also could have done what Ben did with Snek and activated the lightsaber during the tug of war to fry his hand which was a missed opportunity.[/sp]
Fuck you autocorrect you aren't the boss of me.
I'll say this without regret
[sp] but i fucking love Kylo Ren so much now, i'm so glad they didn't fuck up him and Rey and at least Snoke DID something to make the relation stronger and more engaging. I'm also glad he didn't really mature and was blinded by rage on Luke, it gives the First Order a sense of worry, they know he's a damn manchild when he gets upset. [/sp]
I think TLJ completely ruins Luke Skywalker's OT character development. [sp] It's like he's a different character, seriously. I understand why Mark Hamill wasn't that happy with Disney now. and having the central character of the SKYWALKER SAGA be a random nobody is fucking laughable, jesus christ. The fact that Force Ghosts are now tangible and can interact with the world with no explanation is a bit weird, too. At least have a Qui-Gon or Obi-Wan cameo along with the Yoda one to explain why this is now the case, or to give some exposition on why Luke chooses to merge with the force at the end of the movie. I don't think there'd ever be a Qui-Gon cameo though because Disney seems to be aggressively ignoring the PT in the ST (I'm aware that there were prequel characters in Rogue One, but that's not a saga film). The film is tonally all over the place, you've got the unfunny comic relief scenes alongside Luke Skywalker trying to murder his nephew in his sleep. [/sp]
One of the most popular supermarket brand here in Italy has the abit of releasing a set of crudely-made plastic mini-action figures for the kids to enjoy upon the release of certain movies or series. You can get said toys by spending a certain amount of money at those stores (the more money you spend for that particular shopping session the more of them you get).
They did a series about Star Wars last year just in time for the release of The Force Awakens, so it was only natural they were going to repeat the stunt just in time for the release of the Last Jedi.
So GAZE WITH THINE VERY EYES.

The ones on the bottom right are "ultra rare", as they are either completely golden or can glow in the dark.
You can even buy a Star Destroyer made of paper and plastic to keep your collection together:

Yay
The Last Jedi destroyed all hopes I had for the Rian Johnson trilogy.
It was a real life Disney soap opera that happened inside spaceship interiors, in space, on an island filled with reptile-nuns and Pokemon, yet another desert planet, and on French Riviera. The character of Luke was completely out of place, as he had lots of Marvel quips and wits and he even[sp]drank from Alf's testicles at one point.[/sp]There was a lot of stuff happening that was completely irrelevant to the plot, and the soundtrack was such a lackluster that Disney probably dug John Williams out of his coffin to compose this.

John Williams isn't dead yet tho...
[editline]14th December 2017[/editline]
just came back from watching it in IMAX this time
yeah it does feel like a marvel movie - with all the quick whips and the especially the [sp]beginning of the movie where poe does his whole "i can't hear you lol your mum" gag on the radio[/sp]
John Williams isn't dead yet tho...
That was a joke. He is already so deaf that he shouldn't be composing anymore. There is not a single new memorable compositions on the new trilogy. I don't think that people can hum a single new track from their memory.
Damn when my friend said it's probably not better than TFA I was very surprised. Sounds like it's still fun but I'm glad I don't get as worked up about the series as everyone else. Blade Runner 2049 was far and above my most anticipated movie for years.

Rey's theme is very memorable.
