I really enjoyed the movie. It doesn't play out like a star wars movie at all. It's a little frustrating to see the same people criticizing the force awakens for taking no risks now also criticizing the last jedi for actually taking risks.
Lucas took a different set of risks with the prequels.
[sp]liked:
+ rey and ren. The entire mirroring of those two, loved it.
+ keeping ren evil - although i feel ep9 he will have the exact same fate as vader a la redemption
+ scenery etc - beautiful film
+ there was too much humor but it was a nice break from the constant failure of the resistance
Disliked:
+ luke has become a depressed philosophy student and uses an alt account to cheat the game
+ yoda did not feel right
+ mary poppins princess leia
+ admiral being set up as a machiavellian purely for tension
+ casino planet micro disney movie
+ porg exposition
+ did we have to see luke jammin on them nipple titties
+ snoke is a pussy
[/sp]
Sure there were questionable moments, but I felt it were a lot of awesome moments to balance them out
Seems strange for the score to be -that- low since it wasn't a bad movie by any measure
I don't like that becasue Star Wars is as massively popular as it is right now you're some sort of pariah if you don't like them
I liked the force awakens decently enough but didn't think it was revolutionary, and thought Rogue one was pretty trash and from what i've heard I don't think I'll like this one at all
[sp]They killed off Akbar and for that reason alone 2/10[/sp]
Not even a single bit of memorable music that wasn't recycled from another movie, same problem with TFA. The one thing I was most excited for was some right proper John Williams music and rogue one just barely has some out of all the Neuwars'
I really liked it for the most part.

There are memorable themes but it's no match for OT or prequel music
I watched it last night since I had free tickets, it was very disappointing. The writing was shockingly bad, Rian Johnson was in dire need of another writer/screenwriter. Acting is fine and I think the cast is okay, just sandbagged with terrible writing.
I haven't even seen the film, but why did they give this guy an entire trilogy before his film is even out?
This is by far the most visually distinctive Star Wars movie yet. I'm happy to just see more of Rian Johnson's style in more separated Star Wars content, though sometimes his styles were a bit out of whack with the flow of the rest of the episodic series.
Here are my, as well as some other's, thoughts on the film. Be warned though, it's long and has spoilers.
[sp]https://pastebin.com/KgEY3Fgd[/sp]
Feel free to criticize my points or add onto them.

New designs served literally no purpose
So do we add new things in, or not? If we don't it gets called out as "remember this, memberberries!", if new stuff added in its "wow they're just looking to sell merchandise >:(" seems to be a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" moment.
All are new species that aren't memorable or good
according to who?
now for spoiler stuff
[sp]Why didn't they send the Resistance bombers while Poe was taking out surface turrets before the TIE's got launched?[/sp]
[sp]Because they would have gotten shot down by the surface turrets?? like that was the whole point of poe destroying the turrets.[/sp]
[sp](not how it works)[/sp]
[sp]The Force, or Space? legit question here[/sp]
[sp]Why didn't Holdo tell Poe the plan?[/sp]
[sp]Because he was demoted, and honestly not very trustworthy at that moment because of his penchant for doing stupid things and getting people killed because he wants to be ~the hero~. which is exactly what his plan ended up doing.
Yes, Holdo telling him the plan would have prevented that, but he had betrayed the trust put in him by that point. He needed to just shut up and follow orders.[/sp]
[sp]Also if Leia knew he was a ghost, why didn't she start evacuating the remaining Resistance?[/sp]
[sp]As far as I could tell, she didn't know he was a ghost. Just that he had to confrot Kylo.[/sp]
[sp]Luke's Force projection interacts with Leia, holding her hand and kissing her forehead
Meanwhile, Kylo can't hurt Luke[/sp]
[sp]Because it's his projection, if he wants to interact that's his choice to make it do so[/sp]
[sp]Meanwhile, it fades away? Wouldn't it have faded away when Han died if it was connected with the force? Why didn't it fall through Leia's hands? Or Kylo's? Am I really analyzing dice this much?[/sp]
[sp]The one handed to Leia wasn't real. It was a projection of The Force and faded when Luke became one with The Force[/sp].
[sp]-Rey and Kylo turning on Snoke was good, but led to nowhere. It should've led to someone turning for the other, but instead it feels like the characters didn't progress during the movie[/sp]
[sp]Ren actually does what Vader couldn't - turn on his master and take power for himself. He's doing what he's been trying to do, finish what his grandfather started.[/sp]
[sp]With what knowledge?[/sp]
[sp]we literally get shown the books she stole[/sp]
Sure there were questionable moments, but I felt it were a lot of awesome moments to balance them out

I can see hardcore fans giving it a super low score based on those questionable moments. I found them surprising too, but the movie is still very well made. Adam Driver is great too.
Just because they took risks doesn't mean those risks were good.
I think they were good risks.
Also regarding Kylo Ren:
[sp]I really liked the setup of him being evil and being seduced by the light side as we saw it in TFA. In TLJ he decides to go full evil with very few moments of him struggling with morality. That's fine, I'm just sad that both Leia and Luke seemed to give up on him by the end of the movie. Luke hinted it's just him who can't turn him back but I remember Leia saying she lost her son.[/sp]
Honestly surprised at the hate here.
Really liked it personally.
On a personal note, it was cool to see Justin Theroux have a small role.
Overall I liked it, but maybe i need another rewatch to think it well to where it goes on my ranking of Star wars films.
I actually liked rey a lot better in this movie in comparison to EP VII, and one thing I really liked [sp]Is that Snoke points out and really mad that rey who never hold a lightsaber was able to defeat Kylo Ren[/sp]
There are some scenes that yeah, I Think they were a tad too much [sp]The leia scene flying back to the ship[/sp] this is not Expanded Universe levels of ridiculous, but yeah, that came out of fucking nowhere.
Im also surprised that [sp]Snoke Straight up died, so many theories regarding that character, well rip[/sp]
My last critique for now, I feel like this movie doesnt want to end like [sp] That scene where Ben ask Rey to join him and create a new order, I thought that was the scene where the movie was gonna end, but nope the movie keeps going! Then I thought after that really cool scene where the Resistances's big ship crashes with Snoke's Ship and then the Resistance retreat to that abandoned planet was gonna be the end, but nope it just keeps going! [/sp]
Is Disney still pushing that one chick as the penultimate Mary Sue, or did they reign her in a bit by making her more human and relatable?
Turns out she is a character with flaws, they just weren't a huge part of the last movie but were with this one. Also 2nd last Mary Sue?
[sp]I really enjoyed the dichotomy between rey and kylo in this one. That this wasn't a cut and dry good vs evil thing, hell even Luke almost gave in to darkness nearly cutting down his own nephew in his sleep and all.[/sp]
Also is it me or are visions of the future the main driving force of most of the star wars movie events?
Still wish we had some idea of where the hell snoke came from.
Pardon me, but does the film mention anywhere that [sp]the thing going on between Rey and Kylo is in fact a Force bond[/sp]?
Because I'll have you know, this kind of Force stuff was first mentioned in the videogame Star Wars: Knights of the Ol ...
... Ok, I'll shut up now
Oh yeah, on Crait, was Thom Yorke one of the resistance pilots? I swear I saw him for a split second AND he was at the world premiere...
TLJ has the most aesthetically interesting and pleasing 10 second shot in the entire star wars movie franchise. I legitimately can't think of a cooler looking scene in any SW movie
Visually the movie was excellent. Brilliant effects and cinematography. The story was entertaining, but there was a lot wrong with it. The jokes fell flat and were out of place. The very overt merchandising moves, esp Porgs were not tastefully done. Where were the mainstays of the SW universe? There were next to no familiar aliens.
[Sp]I'm annoyed that Snoke was built up and cut down so easily. I wanted a backstory for a character that apparently has powers on par with Sidious. I don't like Ben Solo as a villain.[/sp]
I think Ganerumo is secretly Rian Johnson.
I think Ganerumo is secretly Rian Johnson.
how dare people have a positive reaction to this movie and really like it because Lord Exor didn't.
Relax, it's not that serious. Besides, I'm clearly not the only one with a lukewarm reaction to the film, and I'm not even that peeved by it. In fact, I'm slightly pleased--in a spiteful way.
[sp]And yes, Ren managed what Vader couldn't, primarily because Ren's master was an idiot. And I don't think anyone for a moment would consider Kylo Ren, what with all his hotheaded shouting and temper tantrums, a worthy candidate for big bad. At least Vader was a calm and collected leader, who could have conceivably run an empire.[/sp]

Where did he come from, where did he go. At least he had nice robes.
I want Star wars to go away.
Seeing it absolutely everywhere. And its going to be like that for a long time.
Its getting tiring.
so this is star wars most polarizing movie

edit:
late rip
i find it hilarious how hard 4chan reacted to [sp]luke drinking milk from that animal. https://i.imgur.com/7OPS423.jpg[/sp]
Disney is speculated to manipulate critics, and I honestly wouldn't doubt it.
