Star Wars Megathread Episode IV: A New Thread: UNTAGGED SPOILERS? 1 WEEK BAN
But just because those things exist doesn't mean the rest is canon, nor do they connect to the "old republic" that has been vaguely mentioned unless stated otherwise, they can use the names, they can use the ship designs, but that doesn't mean any of it's connected to the Legends Old Republic.
We pretty much know nothing of this "new" old republic, other than the fact that it was the name given to a galactic government that existed prior to the establishment of the Galactic Republic, thousands of years before the Clone Wars, with some new canon mixed in that I can't remember off the top of my head, something to do with the Sith and Jedi of old fighting each other, might have come from Rebels
And some canon from the Clone wars series with the Mandalorians who talked of the fall of the old republic, but other than that we don't really know much about it.
That's pretty much what I'm expecting them to do with the New Old Republic eventually, it'll have new elements mixed with the better older elements, it won't be exactly the same, but they have the free reign to pick and choose the best parts from the Legends Old republic and leave out the worst parts and make a fantastic new Old Republic out of it.
The old republic is the same republic that existed right up until the empire was formed, they just call it old as to refer to how long ago it was.
The old republic is the same republic that existed right up until the empire was formed, they just call it old as to refer to how long ago it was.
Sort of but not quite, the Old Republic the galactic government that existed prior fell and what was left eventually formed together and became what I suppose could be called the "New" Republic in the Galactic Republic, so they are just as much different governmental entities as the Galactic Republic and the Empire are really.
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Old_Republic
Just to confuse you, the term Old Republic was again used for the Galactic Republic after it became the Empire, so I suppose the previous Old Republic should be thought of as the Old Old Republic. :v:
When I said a sliding scale of canon, I was referring to the Holocron continuity database, which was used by Lucas licensing to keep track of its IP. It had different categories: G-canon, T-canon, C-canon, S-canon, N-canon and D-canon. Props to Leland Chee for keeping on top of everything and trying to make it all fit together.
My point is, the setting's always been a clusterfuck and movies have always trumped everything else (see G-canon), so Disney saying "movies take precedence over everything" isn't exactly new, and there isn't really a need to consider Old Republic stuff as being canon or not as it happened so far in the past it has next to no bearing on the new film franchise.
It's always confused me why they thought a Detours canon would be necessary. They didn't even launch the show; yet it would have its own continuity within itself separate from the films?
You see, I thought the writing for the force awakens was so bad that I have to question if sw7 is worthy of 'canon'.
the only thing I hated from TFA was the falcon scene
it felt like a sitcom
I mean, it's not bad, it's just it's a total repeat of the plot of A New Hope but not as good, still enjoyable however.
[editline]edit[/editline]
Again, not bad, but a very very safe movie, but I now have high hope's episode 8 will change that and actually do something original, instead of being a repeat of the plot of Empire Strikes Back or something. :v:
I liked TFA, I thought it captured the spirit of adventure of Star Wars pretty well and the characters as a whole were likeable.
Don't know why I'm getting dumbs
Off of my memory:
Round 1 Let's hyperdrive into a planet and survive.
Round 2. Hey Wookie, this blaster of yours is real powerful
*shoots antagonist. He gets a limp*
Round 3.
Holy fuck, this guy can suspend a blaster shot in mid air.
Can't hold a candle to this waste management expert who picked up a lightsaber.
Round 4
Oh look. A convenient rift in the ground separates us. Guess you save a villain from dying off too soon (RIP maul)
Bonus rounds
-Calling your PMC "the resistance"
-[del]Let's take a moment to look how washed up harrison ford looks[/del]. I mean hey, han's back.
- you'd put significant resources into Death Planet, but you don't even have half a fleet.
- This one stormtrooper has a melee weapon because we wanted an early lightsaber fight before . No in-universe reason.
-This phasma chick seems pretty cool. They got that woman that owned brienne of Tarth to play so she must be pretty good. Oh, she's useless.
- stabbing with the pomel rather than gently putting the side in would be really useful.
-I bet near the end of this trillogy we'll have someone telling Kylo Ren "there is good in you" and then he throws snoke down a reactor's shaft or something.
-I am 900% sure that pilot died. You have his jacket. I mean he acts well and all, but he died.
Conclusion: Who the fuck wrote this ?
Like, the prequels had problems with it's story (Do you wanna have our army shut down if we destroy the command ship? Sure) but this one movie had more things-that-don't-work than the entire two trilogies before it combined.
I liked TFA, I thought it captured the spirit of adventure of Star Wars pretty well and the characters as a whole were likeable.
Oh I completely agree, I did enjoy the characters and I do want to see more of them, in fact I really like Kylo Ren and the fact that he's clearly a whiny bitch that the First Order only really give a damn about because he has the ability to use the force, he's basically prequel Anakin done right, but... I do want more originality from the next one in regards to plot.
Because that's really the biggest qualm I had with TFA.

it's a shame they're crushing blacks and blowing out whites but other than that it looks nice
I like that the Hammerhead is in Rebels but I have to say I prefer the original look.

R1 spoilers, sorta, not a big deal really: [sp]It's nice they took the hammerhead name literally in R1[/sp]. I think they went with a retrofit sort of look to make it more in line with the current art-style. The genuine ship would be over ten thousand years old by the time of Rebels; it would make no sense to keep something like that around, unless durasteel doesn't oxidize or age for some reason.

I suddenly find it really weird that extragalactic beings have a concept of "steel."
Steel is probably really cheap if we assume their galaxy follows some of our rules and Iron exists in large quantities across the multitudes of minable planets.
Unless they can really easily do shit to common elements like make carbonfiber, it's probably still a common construction material.
The most common way they make structures in the movies tho seems to be that they can easily just carve it out. Luke's farm, the hoth base, Yoda's hut, Geonosis. All really nice looking places that are just expertly hollowed out nature for the most part

I never thought of it that way. It's probably pretty easy to carve shit out when you can just have droids do all the work or just vaporize it all with plasma. Aren't the Geonosis structures partially organic though, kind of like Xenomorph hives? I always got that feeling from going through bug homes in Republic Commando.
No, they're not organic (i don't think) They look really regal on the inside, but quite natural on the outside for that insect theme. It helps them hide. The planet has nasty radiation so they all live underground.
I don't think geonosians use droids to build (despite making weapons and battledroids) they use their worker class (they're insects) to build stuff. I think you could get the outside looking stuff to look natural because they're using natural means of insect-ness to build. I don't know how insects make structures. Do they use natural acids or something?
Catalyst confirms that the Geonosians do the work, not droids.
A lot of the early death star work was done by worker drones.
Round 1 Let's hyperdrive into a planet and survive.
It's Han Solo, he's been piloting ships for years, you figure he's done this kind of shit before
Round 2. Hey Wookie, this blaster of yours is real powerful
*shoots antagonist. He gets a limp*
There's a reason why it was established early on that the Bowcaster was powerful. When Kylo was able to withstand that shot and still fight, shows that he is a lot more powerful than we were led on.
Round 3.

Finn was trained in melee combat, it makes sense that he would be able to use Melee weapons. Also Kylo was toying with Finn while fighting him.
You see, I thought the writing for the force awakens was so bad that I have to question if sw7 is worthy of 'cannon'.
Of course it's not worthy of cannon, it can't even fire projectiles. What a letdown.

jj abrams is a shit writer and that's why lawrence kasdan was brought in, aka someone who actually knows what they're doing.
although i wonder just how involved he was with the screenwriting process, and if he wasn't just brought in like how lucas hired him to help re-structure and clean up empire. shit, that would explain why it had some enjoyment to it.
here's one, i've also seen one from another angle where it was positioned on a miniature patch of Geonosian ground against a bluescreen. it was part of a bigger (enormous) prequel miniatures gallery.

Dude. Why couldn't you just throw in a dumb like everyone else? Why do you bother with these poor counterarguments?
I believe the crew were talking about what a stupid idea it was before they did it. If such jumps were possible, why are they not done more often? Why bother with blockades ever? Why not hyperdrive through the shields of deathstar II in RotJ? And I know you don't wanna go into physics, but lightspeed through atmosphere, which is stuff, and that close call turn...
Kylo toys with his opponents? He could stop a blaster bolt in mid air without effort, and apparently lessen the damage of wookie blaster... but still looses, and looses in a force tug of war to a novice who's untrained.
Also, I know he's unstable and a dark side user and all, but you don't toy with people when you're bleeding to death. You kill them or you leave, you seek medical attention. It's common sense, and although you might dislike common sense in a fantasy movie, I'd like to remind you that almost everyone who failed a Sith lord in the OT got choked or electrocuted. It pays to do a good job.
Why the fuck was Fin trained in melee combat? Unarmed combat might be useful if you get disarmed, but gun beats stick. Also, He's a waste disposal expert.
I think we can all agree that the more likely scenario for a planet collapsing in on itself is death for everone, not the ground spiriting eachother away for a sequel.
Calling a PMC 'the resistance' is a sad joke. I imagine it went something like this:
Writer:So the rebellion won and the republic are restored. I guess the good guys will be the bigger group?
Disney: No, we don't want them to seem imperial (or put some perspective on how wars are fought today)
Writer:Then we have to equal forces. The new republic versus the imperial remnant which still holds much of the galaxy
Disney: Equal sides? Everyone hated the prequels. No, No, no! You must go back to the OT,which was successful, and recapture the little guy fighting tyranny.
Writer: But the little guy's are the fascists now, fighting democracy.
Disney: Ok, alright. You make the big government being folks who don't listen, have a small PMC act as rebels and call them the resistance so we can once more have little guys (backed by big guys) fighting a larger group (fascists)
Writer: oh. So we make PMCs and the dishonest shit people ascribe to politics and the CIA seem noble
Disney: Exactly. But they're called the 'resistance' which sounds noble. It'll sell well.
Only way I see them salvaging that is having a bunch of imperial holdouts rise up at once declaring for the NO, and then we have a large scale, two sided war again. (they'll probably do that) But it just seems like a real contrived and ill-explained method of getting a New Hope remake into the trilogy.
Every time I looked at Ford, I saw pain. It's clear he's there for a pay check and would otherwise want nothing to do with it. And his Debut? Well, if you're a massive nerd you'd know he's in there already and it's no surprise. If you're a new person, you've got no idea why the movie expects you to celebrate his appearance.
Poe just left his jacket there. That he was wearing. Poe did not look for Fin if Poe were to wake up first.
And then when it's revealed he's alive, there's surprise. Because nobody checks for corpses/injured people in need of medical attention.
The more you try to defend it, the weaker it gets.
Now I return to waiting for a decent Star Wars FPS that isn't Republic 'The only thing better than bullet sponge super battle droids are infinitely respawning Geonosians' Commando. I'd really kill for one set in the time period of the OT, but by the sound of things the new Battlefront isn't worth it.
I just want a story-driven shooter where you play as stormtroopers. Like Republic Commando but just normal troops. We haven't had a full-on Imperial based game since TIE Fighter, maybe Battlefront II if you count the campaign, it would be nice to have a game where you're just a standard infantry stormtrooper, maybe have the player's actions become increasingly morally questionable as the game progresses, ramping up to the player doing something like burning down the Lars homestead.
Hey, we need more dark Star Wars stories.
A new hope/Empire strikes back are solid 8/10 movies
RotJ is like 4/10. If it weren't for a few moments of utter beauty, it would've been 2 or 3. I haven't watched the prequels in a while, but on average, shot for shot, they're better than ep6. It's just episode 6 had those beautiful moments with luke, vader, the emperor (even if undermined by irrelevant shit on the planet) near the end and that drags it up for a lot of people.
Is there a shortened version of E6 that gets rid of most of the ewok shit? Most of it just feels like they put it in so they can have all three movies be around two hours, when they only had an hour of plot for 6.
What are you smoking, Return of the Jedi was great.
The idea that Ewoks ruined the movie is just overly dramatic. I do think wookies would have been a better idea, though.

Did you not notice that the minute Finn actually struck Kylo that Kylo immediately took down Finn?
Why are you complaining about the hyperspace jump? It was cool and you know we've had 3 movies that have built up Han as being a good pilot.
"Why was Finn trained in melee combat?" You know soldiers today are trained in melee right? And oh I donno maybe because one of the strongest weapons in the galaxy is a sword
I feel like you don't actually have problems with the movie you're just looking for excuses to dislike it because someone told you too or you want to be cool.

not defending thejack here, but one doesn't simply just launch into hyperspace, and han solo isn't a guy that just says "ah fuck it, let's find out if this works or not". it defies the logic of the previous films and established character.

If you watch that scene again Han explains that the shield on the planet is at a certain frequency that you can pass through if you're going through hyperspace. During that scene when he's explaining his plan you can see him and chewy typing in coordinates and priming everything for what they were about to do.

oh no, i meant when they jump out of the hangar of the cargo ship to escape the rathtars and gangs. he just jumps into hyperspace, but that doesn't happen, as you need precise coordinates to make a jump.
the scene you're talking about does it properly just like you explained, with them punching in coordinates and setting the ship up.

yeah but that's more of a "let's hope this works thing"
[sp]Same thing happens in Rogue One too[/sp]
and I'm sure you can just jump straight forwards until you turn the hyperdrive off
