It's probably still the pinnacle of the looter shooter genre to be honest. The world has charm and isn't totally devoid of character like most of the competitors. The weapon system can get a bit repetitive, but it still has a wild amount of variation as a base rather than "number go up". And co-op is genuinely quite fun in it, so grab some mates and get some shitty inside jokes going.
