Sun glances at the quick detach loop on the rifle. "Just pop the broken one out and put a new one in. Surely Steve has dozens laying around. They're meant to be replaced." She glances back at Steve to confirm, and adds "I'll accept. Sounds like fun honestly. Do you have extra mags and ammo for the QBZ? It'll be nice to use my service rifle again."
Steve's look of suspicion turned into a wide grin. "It's a deal then." He shook Red's and Sun's hands before gesturing towards one of the workbenches. "Spare straps and assorted accessories in the first box on the left. Put back all the tools where you found 'em." He then motioned for Sun to follow along as he walked up to pile of long military weapons cases. After moving three cases aside a much more slimmed-down case was revealed with chinese markings all over. Steve popped open the case to reveal the rifle, a scope and three backup magazines with the fourth magazine inside the gun. "There you go."
"Fantastic" Sun knelt to pick up the rifle, detached the magazine, and pulled back the bolt to check the chamber, bolt carrier group, and bolt face with the precision of a soldier familiar with the weapon. Seemingly satisfied, she sets the magazine down, releases the bolt catch, and shoulders the rifle, aiming through the scope in a safe direction as she checks the scope on it. After a few moments of additional checks, she picks the magazine back up and nods. "You never forget your service rifle. Feels just like I remember. Do you have the 5.8x42 DBP10 for it?"
"O-On it!" she she said, before bailing out of the vehicle. From the sound of it, Karsten had a very special guest with him. Koko promptly grabbed the MP7 out of the backseat, before darting for the entrance to the bunker. The SMG pressed to her shoulder, she carefully moved inwards into the bunker. Check your corners, sweep everything, short controlled bursts. She repeated those words over and over in her mind as she travelled down the halls in search of both Karsten and Ori.
Artyom had left for the briefing before quickly returning to his bunk. The idea of escorting VIP's out of a unknown situation did not make him feel any better about the mission at hand. This seems like a good way to suffer unnecessary casualties. He returned to continue reading his book quietly as everyone else continued about their business.
Davis, speaking with Colfac and Captain Jackson, turned around. Her face lightened up a bit. "I know who you are Mr. Thomson, it's a pleasure to meet you. I personally oversaw the recruitment of our drivers, pilots and other mission specialist." She looked at Colfac and Jackson. "Excuse me." The two men nodded. Davis walked towards the first row of chairs which was now empty as all the contractors were clearing out. "What did you have on your mind?" "First off let me just say thank you for giving me this opportunity to be part of the team, it doesn't happen quite often that something like this comes along my recruitment email folder. Very excited to be here." Crius started with excitement. "I just some quick questions from the briefing. First, you mentioned team leaders. Who are these going to be? What kind of chain of command, ROEs or squad structure can we expect to have? Secondly, which vehicles are we going in with and what kind of role are the drivers expected to take on? Lastly, its about retrieving the dinos. Even with all this gear and weaponry, we've never fought against creatures like this before, we're unsure what to expect in a combat situation with these creatures. Are there any specific protocols to look out for, or any information on these things that'll help us take them down?" Crius asked fast firing these questions letting his excitement get the best of him. After he finished he took a deep breath and sigh. "Phew, sorry, fast fire questions. Was just curious is all commander." Crius finished.
>> "Just pop the broken one out and put a new one in. Surely Steve has dozens laying around. They're meant to be replaced." "Thanks! That's exactly the help I needed!" >> "Spare straps and assorted accessories in the first box on the left. Put back all the tools where you found 'em." "Of course, thanks for letting me use it." Red bid the pair farewell and went over to the workbench. In just a few minutes he had the rifle strap fitted to the brand new loops of his rifle. It took another minute to adjust the strap till the rifle felt right around his shoulder. He also grabbed 3 magazine holders. Red would fill the bandoleer later after getting back to his bunk. Back at the bunk, Red sat himself down and lay his pack at his feet and his rifle at his side. With a heavy sigh, he opened the top of his pack and dug down to pull out his personal armory. The ammo he had collected earlier, a simple side holster and 2 extra mags for his 1911. The 1911 itself, his rifle's action, it's scope wrapped in bubblewrap, and 3 4-round magazines. Red first loaded the cartridges for his rifle, than filled the bandoleer with an additional 5 .270 cartridges. He then went about reassembling his rifle, refixing the bolt action and attaching the small scope he had purchased off ebay. He then finished loading his pistol magazines with the .45 acp. Finished, he slid the weapons unloaded beneath his bunk and dumped the magazines and their holders into his backpack. Red lay back to try and get some rest, but not before he popped another dramamine. It had only been maybe one and a half hours since his last dose, but what the heck. "You only live once," Red thought.
YCV Mjolnir Steve nodded. "Of course." He walked over to another case filled with grey ammo boxes. Just like the rifle case these boxes were covered in chinese markings. "Take as much as you can carry." --- Rebecca chuckled. "No need to apologize. It's impossible for us to cover everything in one briefing without stretching it out." She crossed her arms and cleared her throat. "First off: teamleaders have already been chosen. In DAGR's case it's Lieutenant Colfac. Should he for unknown reasons not be able to command the squad or be deemed unfit to command it the squad will have a vote to elect a new teamleader. Chain of command out here is not as complex as it is in a military force. Our force for example will be split into three convoys and one aerial taskforce. Each convoy has a section leader- in DAGR's case that would be me- and below each section leader there's at least five or six teamleaders. Colfac will be responsible for the DAGR team itself while Morhauser, Colfac's right hand, is responsible for all the drivers and gunners of the same convoy. Vehicles are very varied. DAGR will mostly rely on a mix of Oshkosh J-ATVs, Cougar 6x6 MRAPs, the smaller 4x4 Cougars and one or two Maxxpro MRAPs. We also have a Stryker ICV in reserve. All drivers have experience with intense driving environments, rough terrain and other stress factors. You're expected to keep all your passengers alive no matter what as you go from point A to point B." Davis grunted. "You'll have the added benefit of staying warm and dry. Keep in mind however that you may up living inside the vehicles for longer durations. As for the dinos, well..." She shrugged. "You do what you have to do. If there's no way out you keep slinging lead at them untill they stop moving. They don't pay us to be park rangers and this mess is definitely not our mess to clean up. Get in, get out. Everything inbetween are obstacles." ----- Isla Paraíso Koko slowly descended into the bunker. Somewhere inside were Karsten, Ori and a very unwanted guest. A few shell casings littered the staircase down into the bunker and several of the ceiling lights were flickering in an erratic fashion. A quick glance upwards revealed that they had been hit by bullets from Karsten's P90. Down below the corridor had grown completely dark. Panting could be heard from the darkness. As Koko's eyes adjusted she could see a figure leaning against the wall. A pool of blood was next to the figure, as well as the dark rectangular shape of a P90. Next to the blood was a long tail and a pair of clawed feet. Striped feathers colored green and brown ran alongside the tail and the outside of the legs. Koko continued her descent but accidently stepped on a shell casing, causing it to roll down the last remaining steps while making a loud cling for each drop. The figure's head snapped towards Koko and one of the arms were raised in her general direction. A small object inside the hand was pointing directly at Koko. The figure hesitated.
"Karsten! Don't shoot! Its me, Koko!" she responded, saying it just loud enough to be heard. She couldn't risk attracting anything else, especially with Karsten in such a wounded state. She eyed the corpse nearby as she moved closer to Karsten, taking quiet steps to avoid making any more noise than she already had. "The truck's outside. Have you seen Ori anywhere?" she asked, looking around. Trying to make out anything she could in the darkness.
Sun nods and thanks Steve before grabbing several boxes. She takes a few moments to load the four magazines she has, then packs as many boxes as she can comfortably carry into her rucksack without weighing her down too much. She ends up with 4, 30 round magazines and an additional 300 rounds of ammunition in 6 boxes.
Crius saluted the commander, "Thank you for the information ma'am. All is well understood and I'm excited to be of service." Crius moved on back to the bunks in the storage containers, and took out his manual again as he grabbed a bunk. May as well study up a lil' more till we hit landfall.
Karsten lowered his pistol. Halfway down he dropped it on the floor and groaned. "He's still inside." He gestured at the dead dinosaur. "If he's smart he went into hiding as soon as he saw that thing knocking me down the stairs." As Koko approached she'd see Karsten much better. He was currently clutching his chest using his left hand. A long and deep cut had torn open his chestrig and uniform in a diagonal fashion. It had been dangerously close to his heart. Karsten turned his head towards Koko. "I don't feel so good."
Name: Hans "Kraut" Wernz Gender: Male Nationality: German Class: Merc Appearance: https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/209022845571956736/461108899022503946/1514848570064.jpg Biography: Coming from a family of soldiers dating back to before WW1, it was only natural that Hans would join the army to carry on the family tradition. What came as a surprise however was his departure in 2010 to do mercenary work for personal reasons. He never really dabbled in the more shady parts of his profession, at worst he was working for corporate interests. But that led him to be hired by Yggdrasil as a security consultant on Isla Paraiso. Now he's stuck on an island with dinosaurs looking to get himself and his employers out.
A voice trailed down the darkened hallway too, unmistakeably Ori’s. “Is it safe?” he hushed out. “Are there any more?”
“Is it safe?” he hushed out. “Are there any more?” "I didn't see any on the way in. Truck's outside, we need to get out of here. Help Karsten to the truck, I'll keep an eye out." said Koko, flashing the MP7 in her hands. She looked back to Karsten. "Did either of you manage to get any supplies?"
“Oh my god! Is that you Kyo?” Ori rushed out of the shadows and into the light in all his worn, torn, and beaten up glory. ”Thank god you’ve come! This bunker isn’t safe! It’s-“ Something wet soaks around his shoe. He turns down to see a puddle of blood and a trail leading to a badly wounded Karsten. “Karsten, you’re hurt!” He rushes to his protector’s side, hoisting Karsten’s arm over his shoulder while using his free hand to put whatever pressure he could on the cut. ”Kyo, listen! I couldn’t bring anything since I was too busy trying to reboot the system, but down the hall is a way that leads to a supply room. I don’t know if it’s locked, and I do not know if there’s any more of those things around, but maybe there’s something in there that can help Karsten!”
Karsten clenched his jaw as Ori puts pressure on the wound. "We need to get out of here quick. Grab what you can. Should be some food and medical supplies somewhere. All the bunkers were fully stocked." Outside of the bunker Brandt slapped the hood of the car twice. She spoke over the radio. "Time is running out! I've spotted two of them so far!"
"If we have to hold a democratic vote for a impromptu leader in the field, I cast my vote in advance to McCain here." he said with a slight chuckle. He then raised an eyebrow and pulled a approving expression as he saw the Spas - 12 leaning against his bed post. "Seems like you got a good taste in fire power, mister. You country-side by any chance?" he inquired.
Koko looked to Ori. "Get him to the truck. I'll get the supplies. Hurry!" she said, before departing from the pair. They needed food and other supplies, or else they weren't going to last till rescue arrived. She followed the line on the floor, barely making it out in the darkness. It looked green. She hoped it was green. Green was storage in these bunkers. Green was supplies. And she'd kill for a candy bar right about now. ------------------ Frank chuckled at the McCain comment. "I'm not really a leader. I just build and fix things." he commented. He glanced over upon Nils' second comment. "I'm from Nevada. Vegas. Used a shotgun in 'Nam and with other groups before APS, so I just grabbed what was familiar to me."
The shelter was dimly lit. It was sparsely decorated with most utilities such as beds, tables, benches and foldable walls being stacked and propped alongside two of the three walls waiting for use. Alongside the third wall were several unopened crates marked with simple icons such as a plate flanked by a knife and fork, an icon of a red cross and an icon of a blue waterdrop. Judging by former experiences from looting other bunkers these crates generally had enough supplies in them to last for months. Sadly time was running out and Kyo would be forced to loot only two crates of her choosing. --- Brandt opened up one of the cardoors for Ori and Karsten. "Christ, will he be alright?" As Ori was about to answer the vegetation moved. In a mere split-second Brandt turned her head towards the source of the movement, aimed her weapons, squeezed the trigger and riddled the bushes and trees with holes.
They had plenty of water, due to the rainfall from the storm, so they needed food and medical supplies. Koko promptly cracked open and looted a food crate and a medical crate, taking as much of the contents of each as she could. Now to get the hell out of here! She moved back through the bunker, carrying the supplies as she made her way back to the entrance.
Sun has occupied a table in the staging area again, her QBZ-95 rifle laying in front of her in many pieces, organized for easy reassembly. She sits cross legged in a chair, methodically cleaning and oiling parts of the rifle, testing fit, and making sure everything is in working order. Her Ruger P90DC sits on the table next to the receiver of the rifle, having just been finished with the same treatment. Her hair is held back out of her face with a headband, a cup of hot tea sitting on the table nearby, quietly singing a Chinese folk song as she works.
They were closing in. Fast. Brandt started to breathe faster and faster as the eerily silent jungle continued to move. It was as if ghosts were watching from the cover of foliage and the hiding in the shadows created by the leafy canopies above. Brandt looked at Ori. "Get in the car. Now. Lock the door." Ori complied and hopped in the backseat next to Karsten. Brandt shut the door behind. She cursed to herself. She cursed the storm. She cursed the island. She cursed the beasts waiting to kill her. Then Koko appeared from the bunker. She tossed the supplies up on the flatbed, wedging them between the communications gear and the cabin. Brandt rapidly walked around the car, making sure to keep her back facing towards the car at all times. She fired several short bursts at random spots in the jungle, causing the predators inside to jump pack. Koko hopped into the driver's seat and opened the passenger seat from inside. In a mere second Brandt managed to break off the engagement, jump into the car and slam the door shut. Koko wasted no time and the car engine roared to life before sending the vehicle propelling down a dirtroad infront of it. Karsten grunted as Ori re-applied pressure to his wounds. Brandt let out a deep sigh and sunk into the seat once the car had left the bunker behind. Koko glanced at the rear mirror and spotted five dark figures rushing across the road. For now the predators would move on to easier prey. --- Three hours later the island was engulfed in darkness. It was in the middle of the night. In the skies above there was nothing but beautiful stars. This was the first time in months the sky was completely clear. No clouds, no storm. Far away in the distance the storm and its menacing clouds still lingered. A few embers from the campfire rose to the sky as Brandt returned to the clearing. She dropped some wood next to Koko who was tending to the fire. Karsten was already asleep inside the car. Brandt sat down. "We'll head on back to the security centre tomorrow. I'd say that today was a close victory but I think we all know that it could've gone much, much worse." Koko remained silent and Ori nodded. From their protected vantage point on the hill they could see the East Beach far away. In the distance a dinosaur roared. Brandt yawned. "Let's get some sleep. The claymores and alarm mines will keep them away." ----- https://i.imgur.com/U1dyQ5o.png YCV Mjolnir 1st of July 2020 Day 0 of Operation Samaritan It was time. Once the order was given it was as if the entire ship came to life. Deckhands readied, double-checked and triple-checked the flotilla of helicopters sitting on the warm tarmac. Mercenaries and mission specialists were loading up into the helicopters one by one while non-combat personnel loaded up crates filled with ammunition, supplies and other expensive gear. Down below deck at the rear-facing internal dock at least eighty mercenaries, including DAGR (minus their drivers), loaded up on the Liodon. The Liodon was originally destined to be a tourist ship meant to carry park guests around the island. Luckily for APS the vessel was never able to make it to Paraíso due to the storm and now she and her crew had been leased for mercenary transportation. Colfac watched as his team and the accompanying security troopers loaded up. "Come on ladies, we don't have all day!" Up on the flight deck Davis watched as the many aircraft were loaded to limits beyond safety regulations. Captain Jackson spoke up. "I hope you'll find them. All of them." Davis nodded. "So do I." She turned around and did a quick faux salute. Jackson returned the gesture. "Good luck to us both, Captain" said Davis before departing. Jackson nodded. "Happy hunting." --- A bearded man wearing tan cargo shorts and a hawaiian shirt took a sip from his coffee. He adjusted his headset and walked up to the bridge window overlooking the tarmac below. The operations-controller looked towards Captain Jackson who did a thumbs up before taking a seat. With a wide green the controller turned back towards the window. He grabed the headset microphone and adjusted it. "Mjolnir Control. Attention all aircraft. Prepare for flight." Propellers started to spin. Doors, ramps and hatches were shut close. Pilots made one last check of their surroundings while their co-pilots prepared the onboard systems for flight. Around the helicopters the flight deck crew kneeled down and awaited the final command. "Mjolnir Control to the Liodon. Prepare for departure." Down below the Liodon's sailors made their final preparations while teamsters made sure that the ship would not be obstructed on its way out. Slowly water was pumped into the rear dock. Colfac grinned at the squad huddling ontop of the vessel's roof. "I hope you're ready team. There's no going back now." A few corridors away Osman wished Crius good luck as the drivers were ordered to hop into their vehicles. Crius had been appointed one of the 6x6 Cougar MRAPs while Osman had been ordered to drive one of the Oshkosh L-ATVs. As Crius entered his vehicle he was greeted by his gunner, Dallas, who seemed hyped up for landfall. Not too far from the rest of the vehicles was the massive APS command vehicle where Rebecca and a crew of technicians would oversee operations while on the move. Rebecca sat down inside her chair. "Samaritan Command to Mjolnir Control, we're ready." "Roger Samaritan Command. Commencing operation." - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqdUA3x1hc8 "Mjolnir Control to all. Commencing Operation Samaritan, I repeat, it's time to visit the zoo." As soon as the order was given the Liodon was released from the rear of the Mjolnir. Once the transport was clear of its larger mothership it broke off from its adopted course and began navigating for the island which was a mere twenty minutes away. The team standing on deck would be able to make out details on the beach such as drift wood, rocks and beached boats. Meanwhile the flight deck of the Mjolnir turned into a wasp's nest as the many aircraft took off in waves. The first wave, spearheaded by the lone V-22 Osprey, carried the Stryker ICV below and was flanked by several UH-60 Blackhawks and a pair of NH-90 helicopters. The following waves were a mix of Blackhawks, Chinooks and smaller utility helicopters. A pair of MH-6 Littlebirds broke off from the swarm and took up flanking positions above the Liodon. Onboard the side-mounted benches were several rough-looking mercenaries carrying personalized weapons and gear. Nearly everyone wore a bandana, balaclava or some other form of mask paired with goggles or glasses to shield their faces from the wind. Same thing applied to sharpshooters and snipers sitting on the sides of the many Blackhawks. One of the Littlebird sharpshooters waved at Sun. He did a thumbs up and pointed towards his arm. A chinese flag in subdued green and black colors. Kaspar chuckled. "Small world, huh?" - Below deck dozens of alarms started to sound off. Dallas tapped on the roof three times. "Here we go!" Outside the four-point heavy vehicle sling tensed up as a Chinook hovering above started to ascend. Soon the entire vehicle was in the air with Crius and Dallas sitting nearly a hundred meters into the sky. Not far from them Osman waved out of the window from his J-ATV carried by a battleworn Blackhawk helicopter. Lastly the command vehicle was airlifted by not one but rather two Chinooks to help compensate for its large size and heavy weight. - Jackson stood next to the operations-controller with a big smile on his face. "Godspeed Davis, godspeed." Outside the deckcrew cheered as the sky was filled with helicopters heading towards the island. Jackson motioned for the operations-controller to hand over his headset. "This is Captain Jackson speaking. Good luck to you all. Watch your backs out there. Godspeed. Mjolnir out." - As soon as the first helicopters reached the shoreline the smaller transport helicopters touched down at the beach and in nearby clearings. Larger aircraft were forced to drop off their vehicles and other heavy cargo before setting down at a large plot of grassland. The lone Osprey set down with a heavy thud and dropped its ramp with a bang, releasing a dozen or so mercenaries out onto the island. Crius' vehicle was carefully set down at a plot of grass mixed with sand. As soon as the vehicle hit the ground Dallas covered his ears. Four explosive bolts detonated, effectively detaching the slings from the vehicle. The gunner chuckled and peeked into the vehicle. "We're clear! Let's go!" Next to them Osman rolled up with his J-ATV which was currently without a gunner. Dallas smiled like a boy watching girls as he observed his colleagues readying to head into the jungle. They were in the hundreds. All around them mercenaries were spreading out with their weapons held at the ready while mission specialists secured valuable equipment and loaded them up onto the vehicle roofs and sides. Meanwhile the Liodon was approaching the island fast. Unlike the aerial forces the Liodon would not navigate towards the main rendevouz but rather a natural pier made out of rocks and debris. Once the ship was close to the island the pair of Littlebirds broke off and started to sweep the nearby jungle. Far away in the distance a large formation of Chinooks were still in the air. They were the airborne section and had been tasked with securing the airport on the other side of the island, which meant that it would take at least another five hours untill they reached their destination. One of the sailors grabbed onto Colfac. "Sir! We're deploying the landbridge as we speak! Five minutes!" Colfac nodded and raised his voice. "Team! Five minutes untill landfall!" At the bow of the ship a large ramp had been deployed and was currently resting on the pier. Several sailors were now placing large metal out on the rocks to create a relatively safe path from the ship all the way to land. Far off at the edge of the jungle the unknown awaited. - Davis held onto the armrests of her chair as the command vehicle swayed slightly during transport. Once it touched down onto the ground one of the technicians scrambled to barf into a paper bag. Davis got up and entered the cabin. "Status?" The driver looked up from his vehicle controls. "We're good to go ma'am, just say the word." Davis nodded. "Let's get us on the road." She grabbed her headset microphone. "Samaritan Command to Samaritan's One, Two and Three. Relocate to the first rendevouz. See you all in a few." "See you soon, mommy." Replied Colfac over the radio followed by a chuckle. - Colfac chuckled and looked back at the team which was now safely ashore. "Welcome to paradise!"
((Before I post I wanna make sure I'm not mucking anything up. Where would Sun be in all this? In one of the littlebirds, one of the hueys or blackhawks, or with the ground team? I'm assuming one of the helicopters because of the other chinese dude waving at her.))
((Everyone but Crius and Osman were on the Liodon. The Littlebirds were flying close to the Liodon prior to landfall.))
((Gotcha)) Sun had waved back up at the Chinese sharpshooter when he waved at her, and when he pointed out his patch, she grinned and mock saluted him. Upon landfall, she disembarked with the rest of the crew and once the beach head was secure begin taking samples of ambient temperature, humidity, and other such things.
As the Liodon approached shore in the final 5 minutes, the surf became choppier and choppier, lifting Red up and dropping him back in his seat hard at regular intervals. To keep his breakfast down, Red tried to distract himself with mental exercises. From memory, he systematically recalled the notes on the island's dinosaurs he had brought along. He had spent the last two weeks compiling and pouring over any information he could find on the island's 14 dinosaur species. In the 15 minutes since launching, he had reached the P's. "Parasaurolophus. Hadrosaur. Name means 'near-crested lizard'. Primary genetic make up is that of P. Walkeri, with genetic information donated from P. cyrtocristatus to fill in major gaps with a close relative. Rest of genetic makeup is classified. Herbivore adapted for browsing plant matter like branches, shoots, shrubs. Largely ignores the grass in its enclosure. Most known for its meter long crest that extends at the back of the skull. Crest is hollow, part of the respiratory system. Acts as a resonating chamber for vocalization and a high profile visual for signaling. Very social animal, stays in large herds. Diurnal. Good eyesight. Flighty and easily spooked by vehicles or machinery." "Spinosaurus. Therapod. Only one species known. Rest of genetic makeup is classified. Carnivore adapted to wading and swimming in lagoons and shallows to catch fish. Will consume terrestrial game if given the opportunity, but ungainly on land. Distinctive, M shaped, sail along its back seems to be used for thermal regulation and visual signaling while submerged in water. Crocodile like skull has..........." Red's mind trailed off. Something wasn't quite right like he was forgetting something. Reaching between his legs into his pack, he wrestled the notebook out. Pachycephalosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Spinosaurus. He hadn't missed any. He flipped through all 14 species. All dinosaurs. Not a single Pterosaur in the published literature. He flipped back to his haphazardly sketched map. He hadn't noted it down but he knew the briefing had shown an aviary, buried in the mountain close to the research lab. He knew it was there, unknown and unopened to the public. Lord knows LLG probably wasn't interested in normal birds on their dinosaur island. What else had they not told DAGR?
Once Red had departed the ship, Sun waved him over. "Hey! You're one of the other biologists right? Come give me a hand stowing the lab equipment before we get under way. I want to make sure we don't lose anything vital if the mobile laboratory hits a bump."
Red jogged over to Sun and helped her hoist a pallet of equipment on one of the nearby vehicles. As the two moved to grab another heavy pallet Red asked Sun what her training and specialties were.
"Thanks. I'm from Chongqing. I have a couple of specializations, but they all focus on the relatively same area of biology. My degrees are in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, and Molecular Engineering. What about you?"
