”Cool! My grandma is from Chongqing originally as well.” With a one, two, three, the pair lifted another set of heavy equipment with a grunt. “I grew up in Vancouver. Did my masters in vertebrate paleontology. Will hopefully come in handy on this island.” With another one, two, three, they set the equipment gently down on the vehicle. “So what made you want to come to a dark island filled with dinosaurs?”
"Working in a sterile lab is boring, and I didn't really want to rejoin the PLA or become a PMC and waste my education..." Sun shrugs and starts checking the inventory of the latest pallet with a datapad. "Plus, you know, the huge amount of money they're paying biologists was a nice incentive."
Red nodded solemnly as he bent down to pick up a smaller case. “True dat. You don’t have to tell me twice.”
After a brief discussion in the bunk container, Nils and Frank had gotten along pretty well. After being apart for some time, Nils had decided to find the rest of his team. He found Frank at the lower deck as he looked out over the jungle in the distance. "Hey man." Nils said as he came walking up with his backpack and shotgun in his hands. "Last time we spoke ya told me a lot about alertness and instinct, but let me give you something from me as well." He tapped the tattoo on his arm, showing a very scantily clad asian woman, "This is my lady luck, and I think I've got a lady for you too." he finished with a smirk. Nils took out a bright orange shotgun shell and handed it to Frank, "She's a red head with a temperament. Sick her on them when you need it." he concluded with a wink.
((Ya'll are at the beach, @Radley ))
Crius heard the call that it was time to move out, and he quickly grabbed his gear and gun, slinging it over his shoulder like he's used to. He followed the rest of the soldiers down to lower hangars, dodging multiple crewmen running in between corridors, rushing to get everything ready for the OP that was about to commence. Finally they got to their hangar, and he couldn't believe his sight. The ship they were going to use was to get to the island was simply massive. It was starting to make sense to Crius how large of an operation this really was. Suddenly someone tapped him on the shoulder, it was Commander Colfac. "Son, you're in the wrong place. The vehicles are up ton, on the flight deck. They're gonna fly you guys over there with winches." He said as he looked at Crius, with a disappointing frown. Crius let out a long sigh, before quickly apologizing, and double booking it up the stairs to the flight deck. There he saw Osman, one of the other driver by some of the MRAPS and he jogged over to join him. The full scale of the operation really became apparent now, hundreds of soldiers, engineers, scientists all getting ready or already on the move. Osman showed him which MRAP was his and he climbed in, already familiar with the Cougar's layout. He was surprised they gave him a gunner though, and he quickly introduced himself to Dallas before going through all his prechecks. Not long after Crius settled in to his driver's seat, and hooked up the dice cubes to the top mirror, a helicopter was ready to lift them up. The modular system was already in place and the MRAP was winched up into the air, on its way to the island. The view was incredible to say the least. Crius just sat back in seat and enjoyed the ride, not much else he could do. He looked over at Dallas after a couple silent minutes, "You think we got enough men for this OP?" Dallas shrugged in return. Sure fuckin hope so, Crius thought to himself. Soon enough, the made landfall, the helicopter dropping them next to Osman's vehicle, and they were surrounded by a flurry of activity. "Alright...fuel tank is full, plenty of ammo and supplies in the back, all the kits are stocked.." Crius looked over the vehicle and then yelled out the window to Osman, "Hey man, what's the plan now?"
Sun finishes cataloging and securing the laboratory equipment and calls to the driver through the hatch. "All good for the mobile lab! Everything is secured and accounted for!" With her hands now free, she pulls her QBZ-95 around from her side where it had been hanging by a sling, racked the bolt to chamber a round, and looked around expectantly. Between getting the rifle and the beach op, she had mounted a small portable digital seismograph to the left side of the fore-end. She reaches forward and flicks it on, and after a few moments it calibrates to the background. Satisfied, she waits for the order to move out, confident that her device will alert her to any incoming dinosaurs. She glances at Red. "Do you speak Mandarin or Cantonese?"
> "Do you speak Mandarin or Cantonese?" “哦我会讲汉语(I can speak Mandarin)," Red responded. His accent was heavy. Since cantonese was more commonly spoken in the Vancouver area, he clarified, "我爸妈是北京长大的。只跟他们家里讲。我听的和说的还可以,但是不会比你英文好。(My mom and dad both grew up in beijing. I only speak chinese with them at home. My speaking and listening skills are okay, but no way compare to your English skills.)” With no more equipment to pack, Red asks Sun in a hushed voice, "Did anyone higher up tell you anything about what you might expect on this island? I noticed some things in the briefing that don't match the published body of research at all and it has me on worried. The island has a large aviary in its center, but there's absolutely no records of pterosaur species published by Yggdrasil, let alone research on the animal's attitudes and behaviors. If there's living animals in there and the enclosure has been compromised by the storm..." Red looked up to see one of the littlebirds pass over the beach and return to the jungle canopy, its sharpshooter sporting a patch of the chinese flag, "I can't be sure how they'll react to our helicopters on their island."
Sun shrugs and sighs "It's to be expected that they'd hide details they'd deem high risk. It's a common theme among biotech companies. If they DO have pterosaurs and they've broke containment there's nothing stopping them from getting off the island. If you're concerned it might be work bringing up to ops command."
Frank took the shell, examining it. A Dragon's Breath shell. He had shot them a few times before. Incendiary, usually full of magnesium pellets or shards. Shoots flames and sparks out to around one hundred feet. If he didn't light whatever he was shooting at on fire, he'd certainly light the jungle on fire with it. "I'm sure it'll come in handy." he responded, slipping the shell into an empty loop on his shell bandolier.
Nils shrugged to make his backpack slightly mote comfortable, then looked to the jungle and then back to Frank. "Not to stereotype you or anything, but what do you think is waiting for us in there."
"Not to stereotype you or anything, but what do you think is waiting for us in there?" Frank shrugged. "Mainly a lot of hungry lizards." he said, glancing to him. "That and whatever's left of the survivors. Let's hope we find the living ones and don't end up among the dead ones."
> "If you're concerned it might be work bringing up to ops command." Sun brought up a good point, and Red was even a bit embarrassed he hadn't thought to do it himself. After all he had been brought on the island to advise on precisely this kind of situation. He supposed the momentarily lapse in critical thinking was due to his mind being on other issues. "I'll try and locate Colfac." Red bid Sun farewell for the moment and headed back into the landing site attempting to spot some sort of command. He could scarcely make out one person from the next as mercs, specialists, and crew hastened about performing their duties. He saw who he though might have been Lieutenant Colfac and attempted to wave him down.
Isla Paraíso - Campsite Brandt woke up to the sound of a stampede. Or at least that's what she thought. Grabbing her G36 she realized that she wasn't hearing a herd of dinosaurs but rather a swarm of helicopters. While Karsten slowly woke up inside the car Brandt kneeled down. "You guys hear that?" ----- Isla Paraíso - East Beach Morhauser ticked off his PDA checklist and looked up at the mercs next to him. "That should be it. Get ready to move out." The mercs nodded and went to it while Morhauser walked up to Frank, Nils and the rest of the DAGR team. "You guys good to go? Command should get on the line soon." --- Osman shrugged at Crius question and was about to answer when Dallas started to slam his fist into the roof several times. "Look at that big son of a bitch!" Exclaimed the gunner while gesturing towards the jungle. With a loud roar the APS command vehicle arrived, thundering out of the jungle. Several mercs cheered as the vehicle moved across the beach with ease. By the looks of it Davis was heading towards the Liodon and the small ensemble of mercenaries at the far end of the beach. Osman tapped his door twice to get Crius' attention. He smiled. "I guess we'll just follow her. Lead the way, hotshot." --- Colfac dismissed two mercenaries armed with marksman rifles who quickly jumped up on an ATV before darting off. After putting down his PDA inside a large pocket on his vest Colfac turned towards Red. "Can I help you, son?"
> "Can I help you, son?" "Hi, Lieutenant Colfac, sir." Red added the title on at the end after a pause, remembering to show the command proper respect. He was a long way from university now, he reminded himself. "Robert Li, advising paleontologist. Some of my write ups may have passed your eyes the past few months." Red proceeded to explain to Colfac the realization he'd come to this morning, that there was an Aviary on the island that could be containing animals unknown to them. That Red hadn't taken the creatures into account when writing briefs on the island's inhabitants and that the helicopter teams should stay on their toes until more is known. "Lieutenant Colfac, the less I know what's on this island, the less effectively I can advise your men. Is there anybody on this op who would know more about what Yggdrasil has been up too?"
(((Can i join in or do i have wait for a reinforcement wave?)))
Osman shrugged at Crius question and was about to answer when Dallas started to slam his fist into the roof several times. "Look at that big son of a bitch!" Crius watched the massive land vehicle go by, the ground thundering in its wake, with large thread marks on the road behind it. Crius was impressed, whoever was driving that thing was sure as hell more qualified than any of them. The vehicle itself was more of a moving base than anything else. He was happy it was on their side. He looked at Dallas, "That's one big fuckin' car man," with a chuckle. Crius watched the vehicle until it moved on to its first stopping place, the Liodon. Osman tapped his door twice to get Crius' attention. He smiled. "I guess we'll just follow her. Lead the way, hotshot." Crius signaled Osman a quick salute, "Ay ay captain," turned the ignition and the large MRAP roared to life. Testing the peddles a couple times, the massive engine was hungry. Crius put it in gear and began after the towering command vehicle. He was gonna have a lot of fun driving this around.
((Of course my dude. Just fill out your character sheet and I'll toss you in. Here's a link to the Discord.))
((Breadman also joined recently, though we haven't found where he's hiding in the jungle yet.))
NAME: Gordon "HAZMAT" Stagg AGE: 27 GENDER: Male NATIONALITY: United Kingdom CLASS: BIOLOGIST PICTURE: https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/200554/0b4558de-1a44-456a-b2f0-48e88a83aff6/45c409b773e757655656406b1fe869cd.jpg BIOGRAPHY: "Not much to say about me really boss. Happy middle class family, Good grades et cetera et cetera. But i didn't know where to go in life ... until 2013 Ebola in Africa that started a fascination almost with disease, dna, and how life reacts to chemicals. and so i knew what to do. A few years later i had qualifications in genetics, virology and toxicology under my belt. After that? I ended up a Contractor for the collection, study, transport and storage of various biological materials. From blood samples to Anthrax I've done them all. So when a certain islands DNA storage needed some samples securing well they knew who to come to.
Isla Paraíso - East Beach Colfac shrugged. "Well," he began while looking at Red. "Truth to be told, we didn't get all the intel we asked for." He gestured with his right against the ocean as if represented the immovable mass of bureaucracy surrounding Yggdrasil and its operations. "We know that the aviary was operational and we know that there was somekind of lab connected directly to the facility, as well as some sort of viewing platform. I don't like it any more than you do but if there is any flying beasts inside they'd be starved at this point," said Colfac while crossing his arms. Judging by his tone he appeared to be certain that any subjects still in the captivity would have died. --- Kaspar nudged Nils. "Look at that one." He pointed at the command vehicle as it thundered across the beach with Crius' MRAP and Osman's J-ATV following closely behind. Several antennas ontop of the command vehicle's roof bounced from side to side as the vehicle navigated the uneven beach. A gunner ontop looked at the people below with a stern expression while his arms rested on a M249 SAW. The command vehicle stopped next to the DAGR team and a set of metallic steps deployed underneath the small door on the right side of the vehicle. As the door opened it revealed Commander Davis and what would appear to be a man in a high-tech HazMat suit following closely behind. Colfac and Morhauser were quick to approach the commander with the latter waving at the team to follow suit. In the back Osman turned off his vehicle, opened the door and climbed up inbetween to hear what the commander had to say from the comfort of his vehicle. Davis nodded at Colfac. "We're getting intitial recon now. One of the helos spotted somekind of bunker west of here. Take your two vehicles and scout the location, report anything and everything. Colfac nodded. "Understood ma'am." The lieutenant gestured at the man in the HazMat suit. "Who's this fella?" Davis stepped aside. "Mr. Stagg, feel free to introduce yourself." She looked at Colfac. "This another one of your biologists. He arrived during the night and have spent most of the day readying the lab inside the command vehicle." Behind Nils, Artyom and Cole a group of five mercenaries laughed out loud. Upon a quick glance the men, standing next to a dirt bike and light jeep, were looking at a tablet. One of the men noticed the DAGR team's looks. "Hey you!" "Want to earn some extra cash?" ----- Isla Paraíso - Campsite Brandt sat completely still as a Blackhawk passed overhead. She looked at Ori and Kyo. "Do you think we can just say hello?" Meanwhile, inside the jeep, Karsten muttered something unintelligeble before falling down between the seats. A series of muffled curses could be heard. ----- Isla Paraíso - Park Security Central Deveraux drummed her hands against the table. Infront of her was one of Ori's unholy mechanical machination created for the sole purpose of communicating across the island. She didn't know how but somehow he'd managed to program the radio to boost itself, making the signal penetrate the secure walls of the bunker. She grunted. Kyo probably had someting to do with it. She stared at the radio. It had been hours since Brandt's last report. Any number of things could have happened and Deveraux, well, she feared the worst. Her eyes shifted to the notebook infront of her. Scribbled down onto the striped paper were timestamps and brief descriptions with the last piece of the log listing Brandt and Kyo moving in on Karsten and Ori. After that? Silence. After making sure that her pen hadn't ran out of ink and after making sure that it was perfectly aligned with the notebook Deveraux let out a deep sigh. They had lasted for months. Would this relly be their undoing? Damn. I never should have sent them so close to the raptor pen. Supplies were running low too. Not that there were alot of mouths to feed. Aside from the four missing security and technical staff there were a total of twenty people inside the bunker- Deveraux included. Still, at this point they risk having to send teams to the northern part of the island to see if the bunkers up there were intact. Anyone who'd been on the island for more than five minutes would know that a mission like that would be their last. The speaker infront of her buzzed. Whispers. "... Yankee... Golf... Sierra..." Deveraux turned up the volume by twisting a small knob below the speaker. She leaned in. "... Zulu... Five... Seven... Dash... Lima... Four..." Another voice spoke up. It was barely heard as the buzzing intensified. "Understood... -port secured. Hunter, out." Suddenly the speaker fell silent. This was the third time. Deveraux scribbled down the timestamp on a separate piece of paper. The same whispers had been heard twice before with the first ones appearing around midnight. She hadn't managed to pinpoint where it was coming from other than it did come from the island somewhere. Perhaps more survivors? Maybe her boss- Chief Park Security Officer Taylor- had actually survived! He and his team- mostly Park Rangers and Park Security Officers- had gone missing one month after the incident. They had set out to scout the CEO mansion to the north, mostly in the search for some answers. Suddenly Deveruax froze. She felt a presence and turned her head towards the doorway on the left. Her expression softened and she smiled. "Hey handsome," she said to Hans.
"Hey fraulein" Hans smiled while looking at Deveraux. The past several weeks would have been a living hell for him. It was simple. Just go to the island. Check out their security and do whatever is security consultants do. What could possibly go wrong? As if he couldn't think of a million things go wrong, but he just had to tempt fate. Stuck in a locked up bunker with supplies running lower and lower. People ready to panic at any moment. Nobody really knowing what the fuck to do because there were giant fucking lizards running around outside. But hey, he got to spend some...quality time with Deveraux. This job wasn't too bad. "How's everything holding up at your end?" He asked slily "Need anything?"
Red nodded graciously and thanked Colfac for his response. He had no reason to doubt the Lieutenant's honesty in the matter, but he was skeptical about the evaluation. More than half the Donner party made it through 4 months at the top of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Red didn't doubt the willingness of the animals to pick off their own dead or dying. Red followed behind Colfac and Morhauser as they made their way to the parked command vehicle. As Davis briefed Colfac on the recon details, Red asked Morhauser, "Uhm, who's ride am I in?"
After the personnel had made their way to the beach, Artyom had elected to stick around near Osman as they made their foothold on the island. He lazily cradled his rifle, pointed downwards of course, as he abjectly stood around, waiting for the eventual operation to commence. After some time, he sat down next to a crate and took out his small copy of Taras Bulba to continue reading. The laughter had interrupted him at an important chapter in the book, when Taras Bulba had confronted his son for betraying his country and people in favor of marrying a Polish girl, and darted his head over to the men. "Hey you! Want to earn some extra cash?" Artyom slowly stood up, meeting them eye to eye. "How so?"
Isla Paraíso - East Beach Morhauser glanced at Red. "Any vehicle you'd like. Though I do believe that the Cougar MRAP is the more spacious of the two." He gestured at the vehicle manned by Crius and Dallas. --- The mercenary grinned. "We got a contract from one of the Yggdrasil subsidiaries. They want us to take some trophies. Hefty payday." ----- Isla Paraíso - Park Security Central Deveraux smiled and nodded. "Good, considering the circumstances. There's been some static on the radio for the past few hours, doesn't sound like anyone from Park Security."
"Oh, we finally have a rescue team?" Hans' ears perked up "Any idea who it is? US, Russia, China?"
>"Mr. Stagg, feel free to introduce yourself." Gordon briskly raised his hand to shake the brasses hand's. "Names Gordon ... Gordon Stagg Bio-Specialist at your service" He takes a moment to adjust his backpack. "You see after Yggdrasil sent this task force on its merry little way they ... well LGG quickly came to the realisation that due to several reasons possibly including:" He starts taping his finger tips one by one counting off reasons. "The Loss of power." "Structural damage from the storm." "Possible damage to the internal storage canisters." "External contaminants." "Giant Lizards." He lowers his hand to fidget with the large satchel hanging from his right hip. "That the DNA samples and other biological items stored in the RnD's cryo vault are in danger of being rendered dead ,damaged or worthless.SO!" Gordon swiftly detaches a heavily reinforced metal box roughly forty centimetres in length and twenty centimetres in width from the bottom of his backpack and is holding it at one of the narrower ends with a carrying handle. "They brought in me." Gordon goes to one knee and places the box handle up on the ground. "And this" He then proceeds to twist the handle clockwise. After a click and a small puff of water vapour, panels on the side of the box open revealing holding racks and a slightly larger compartment at the bottom. "Is our carrier. It's a miniaturised cryo vault designed by me for various substances. She can last up to a month on her own and could probably ... Maybe survive being eaten by a dino." He closes the canister and attaches it back to his back. "And that's all there's to it. Apart from one other thing." He quickly glances at his satchel and a long weapon case off to the side. "I've been given permission to use these." He reaches into his satchel and procures several chunky magazines with different coloured stripes on them. he then proceeds to tilt the mags revealing instead of shells they contain large syringe / shell hybrids.
Unless you all start posting magically I am inclined to pull the plug and let this sweet, innocent, summer child rest in peace.
Pretty sure we're all waiting for you to actually start the game... all this prepping stuff feels like pre-game fluff.
