Black box is a crutch for bad soldiers
no
it's just mediocre for everyone.
the nerf made it more likely to get anything below 15 than over it. it's worse than before
Oh okay, why the fuck do people use it? Losing a rocket for health on kill is terrible.
sure but why are you so bitter about it then
I only use the black box cause the australium rocket launcher costs triple the price.
black box in pub situations with little meds is still super useful
Soldier is just so versatile that I can't see the point of the Black Box.
You need health more often? Equip Gunboats, use your superior mobility to dis-engage or find health kits when you need to.
You want a steady drip of health so you can sustain yourself without necessarily leaving the fight? Equip the Concheror, which has passive health regen and a buff that eventually allows you to rack up way more of it.
I'm sure the Black Box has its uses, but I don't think any of them are worth sacrificing a fourth of your attack power.
There's currently 8 badge tiers.
Yeah, give it to Heavy instead.
I know this is a joke, but a health on hit minigun is a horrifying thought.
black box is useful in pubs if you want to hold awkward spots without relying on the slow concherer regen, and give you the edge in awkward encounters from said awkward spots
it's pubs, anything can be useful if you adapt your playstyle tbh
There's a reason why Ludmilla was never put into the public version of the game. Nothing short of a random crit, backstab, headshot, or stickytrap could slice through 450 hp quickly enough that's getting healed both by a Medic and by his minigun. It wasn't fun and rather than allow Heavy to function independently from Medic like it was intended to, it instead just strengthened that bond even further. Now imagine that on top of the Sandvich after the 2009 buffs.
It wasn't fun to fight against and it certainly wasn't any more fun to use since when paired with a Medic it became Sasha with no downsides.
the thought of people unironically requesting that banners shall be put to heavy is mind blowingj
The downside was that you couldn't rev without firing, which is worse of a penalty than what is currently employed on the Huo-Long Heater.
Make a minigun cost health to fire but gain back health on damage? Vampire cosmetic set to go along with it, would be very nice 👌
Honestly, I hope they pair the next update with the final TF Comic. It's been a full year since the last issue, and i really don't want a 2 year waiting period like issue #6 had.
Heavy only has two non-situational secondary weapons (Sandvich and Banana, which let's be honest, do the same thing, it's just a matter of how quickly/much you wanna heal), so a Banner-type item would help him function like a Tank. As is, he's too slow for it to be worth it for the rest of the team to bother actually rallying around/behind him unless he's pushing a cart. But give him an AOE buff like the Banner/Concherer/Backup and suddenly his team has some incentive to hang back and protect their Heavy, rather than just rushing ahead and leaving him to get picked off by one of the 50 Snipers on the enemy team.
I love playing Heavy, he's my favorite class, but I'm not gonna pretend he's got anything close to a diverse playstyle. Look at all the unique ways you can play classes like Demo, Engie, or even Medic and Spy, then look at Heavy. He's a mobile turret who requires a Medic to really be effective, and even then he's only a death machine when he's being Ubered or when literally no one on the enemy team is paying attention. Dude needs a buff and some new toys to play around with; he shouldn't be able to solo an entire enemy team, but he isn't the priority player he should be, given his current size, kit, and damage/healthpool.
I agree that heavy is deffo in the need in more diverse playstyles and items, especially for the secondary slot, but Banners are an awful, awful idea - and just thinking of the general consequences is enough to realize that.
No one wants Heavy to function even more like a damage sponge. A heavy with a medic up his ass with those banners equipped would be awful and would generate the damage done on a whim, giving him easy minicrits, speed and damage reduction. Trying to capture the last point of basically anything with a Heavy that has a med up his ass alongside of the Backup essentially disables any form of effective way of taking him about + giving him an effective HP of over 700 that you can't even nudge off with a Sniper, leaving Spy as the last way of dealing with him. Even the ever so hated sticky-spam won't save you here.
Heavy can be a death machine (in a pub context, which is the one you are talking about.) with a med up his ass in essentially any gamemode, atleast from my experience.
What heavy needs is an alternative playstyle that makes him different and stronger without a medic but at the same time doesn't increase his abilities when he has a medic. That's why I naysay general heavy buffs that would affect him with a medic, especially in a competitive context: Taking out a heavy at Last in 6s is already tough enough and causes already enough stalemates - let's not turn that into an even worse problem.
Wrong. The nerf it needed was against getting 15x whatever group you spammed out as health, but the nerf it got has you getting single digit health gains when hitting directs or against low health enemies and it just sucks in general.
Even before the nerf it was a situational pick in competitive but now there’s no reason to run it over the stock. Attack power > worthless health returns.
people doesnt gather around soldiers using it. nor soldiers use it to buff anyone but themselves.
banners shine with proper team coordination, but under those circumstances any coordinated effort can deal with absolutely anything, regardless of the use of a banner or not.
It's only a crutch if used with the Concheror.
Heavy just needs a god damn riot shield primary as an excuse to give his shotgun secondaries a use
Black box needs a very minor buff, something like +2 to whatever health it normally gives out. It's still fun to use mainly because its design is cool but it's objectively weak ever since the change to its health generation
I think I see Soldiers generally use their banners to help with pushes more so on payload maps more then anything. Since there's a big important around sticking around the payload. But yeah, Soldiers do generally use them for their own benefits more then helping the team as a whole.
It would probably be a bit more common place for heavies to push with their teammates though with banners I'd think. Since you won't see heavies flying around the map and Heavies generally benefit a lot more by running with their teams. I honestly feel the banners seem more team oriented around him.
the ones that benefit the most from conch are sustained damage dealers like pyro and heavy.
the ones that benefit the most from buff banner are DPH classes like soldiers and demomans.
nobody benefits from the battalion, not even the soldier.
Eh... I sad Buff Banner really goes both ways. Like with conch, not having to reload and having mini crits which ignore damage fall off means heavy can mow down people even at noticable ranges. With no reloads he never really has to stop firing either. It's true that explosive damage benefits dealing with groups, individuals I'd say it's a lot easier to take advantage of hitscan bullets on individual targets in the long run.
I need to use battalions more, but I'd say it's best perk is getting through a heavily filled choke on heavy. Not to mention it does critical hit immunity doesn't it? Making heavy a lot less weary of sniper fire as well while taking on targets. Plus this should also extend to his medic as well if he is to have one. There's potential benefits no matter how you look at it though.
The Battallion's Backup gives a passive +20 HP. The banner gives everyone in the AoE immunity to headshots, random crits, cap crits, kritz crits etc. It also helps put the kibosh to sentries. It's amazingly effective in even moderately competent hands. It's also great on the front line in MvM.
Fun Fact: Snipers adoptive parents (Mr. and Mrs. Mundy) bear a passive resemblance to John Patrick Lowrie and Ellen Mclain (VA's for the Sniper and the Administrator, among other Valve characters)

Sniper's adoptive parents are very similar to the couple from Courage the Cowardly Dog.
"YOU CRAZED GUNMAN! YOU MADE ME LOOK BAD!"
Someone please make an SFM of that.
I imagined a squashed down version of the Sniper kind of like with the Engineer.
