Well that's the only thing I am missing from having one of each... Well, that and Eternal Floette, which appears as seen in my Bank account due to scanning a QR code.
Don't worry, you'll get a floette-eternal in 10 years once they remake gen 6 and actually distribute it
something something been 3000 years something when it happens

I have now completed the Pokédex in Crystal. (excluding Celebi)

Having a bunch of Pokémon left from my completed copy of Red certainly sped up the process a bit.
Gen 2 is still my favorite generation, although nostalgia is a big bias, it's still special.

But I think that's enough Pokédex completions, later gens are a bit too much for me and the hundred or so hours from doing Gen 1 and 2 is quite enough.
Congrats!
If you are looking to complete the national dex (up to latest), just go straight to the newer games (X/Y~USUM). Breeding and trading has never been easier.
I've personally been trying to finish the National Dex in Gen VI as of late. Kanto/Johto/Hoenn are filled, but I'm still working on Sinnoh and beyond.
Also, OR/AS are really good for finishing the dex considering secret bases can help you level quickly, and it still has a lot of active players.

I'm also working on completing a pokedex, I'm going with HG/SS while I wait for my copy of Ultra Moon to come in.
I gotta say, after playing through both Crystal Clear and HG/SS, what's the point of the money saving mechanic? Like I know pokemon is full of little experimental mechanics in every game that don't make it into the series proper, but literally all the money saving mechanic serves is to basically remove the minimal money management the player has to do. When your mum is't buying you useless berries, she's building up a relatively vast worth for the player's first trip through Johto.
Money management was actually fairly interesting during the first few gyms of Crystal Clear, until I realized I had the bank account turned on and I had unknowingly saved up a fortune. I was always a bit tight on money as I had to maintain a strong supply of potions to stay ahead of the ever-increasing level curve.
In my HG/SS run, though. I just ran out of money for the first time because I decided to stock up on ultra balls and realized I had more money than I ever had at once waiting back at home. Seeing as money isn't really a huge focus on pokemon, it just makes me wonder if they added the mechanic purely for educational purposes, introducing the concept of saving to children or something.
Gameplay-wise it's always a good idea to have a bank in games where it is possible for the player to lose dosh.
You said that the money saving was useless, so they removed it. I don't think there's any deeper reason behind it.
Don't think the "educational purpose" works because mum uses your money to buy unneeded (not useless tho) shit, who wants that.
I mean, I appreciated that mum could basically save up a second million Pokebucks, since you could only carry so much with you.

Leaf is getting a statue.
How about a cameo as an NPC?
Seriously tho, FRLG were rough around the edges because they were the first remakes, and of the first games to boot, but come on, HGSS could have had her around in some way; FRLG had Janine in Fuchsia despite not being in the original, and the GSC Rocket Admins in the postgame (as crappy and unfullfilling the Dead End Islands were).
For the record, HGSS lacking Lorelei and Agatha in any shape or form was a letdown as well.
Leaf is the most underrated female protag.
what the heck isn't her starter bulbasaur
immersion ruined
Appears in the Gen1 remakes only to rectify her lack of appearance (but existing art) in the originals.
Completely disappears post-remakes.
??????????
I understand GF wants to jerk off Red until the end of time, but Leaf was pretty important as well. At least we have Adventures to make up for the mostly-lost role she could have in the games.
She's in Smash Ultimate now if that's any consolation.
Any of you guys been playing that Crystal Clear romhack that's come out recently? I'm sure a lot of you already know it got updated but I was wondering how some of the more 'dedicated' pokemon fans are enjoying it. It's personally spurred me to revisit the pokemon franchise as a whole I enjoyed it so much.
But it actually works, more than anything. The completely open world aspect is actually enjoyable to play, I was worried that a pokemon game with no overall direction might fall a bit flat but I found it so enjoyable it actually had me playing a Gen2 game for the first time since I was a child. It revived that old, tired idea of an official open world pokemon game, with multiple region and multitudes of mons.
It's probably because I know Johto and Kanto like the back of my hand that I'm able to navigate the regions so easily and enjoy the exploration, but I honestly think there's something to this method of designing a pokemon game. I really think game freak should look at the more open world approach in their next title, or even better, fashion a set of remakes in the style of Crystal Clear.
I played it and it really felt fun. Going around and catching the pokemon I want and clearing gyms was a challenge. The only fault in level balance is the fact that it's entirely possible to catch overleveled mons but it catches up by the 6th to 8th gym.
The post game content is professional quality too and not edgy at all.
I'm in a gray area when in comes to how much freedom a pokemon game should give me. The idea of a procedurally generated or open world game caught my attention for some time now but I don't want it to be stripped from what it is right now.
No sense of direction and just the trainer/mon level in the area telling me where to not step next? Or scale the trainer level from your progress or party level? Count me in.
No conversation with friend/rival at every town and no npc pointing where I should go next. Just figuring out everything by myself and backtrace as needed after getting a key item or move. I have yet to see how this rom hack handles its mechanics with the gyms.
But I'm not big fan of a game like this not having character interaction because it gives weight to its world and all the stuff that happens behind the character. It would also not have a firm ground to set a storyline (if intended).
At the same time I liked the exploring in gen I-II where nobody follows me or is poking my back as soon as I enter or leave a town. Still, I'd be very interested to see what could an official game do with the idea of an open world with no direction and the main character always going on its own.
I think Crystal Clear works as a very specific sort of 'celebration' of the Gen2 games. It's why it gets away without having any character interaction at all, something I don't think a mainline Pokemon game could or should try to pull off.
But a sort of spin-off game, in the same vein as Pokemon Let's Go? I can imagine that. One or more of the classic regions remade in the new engine, with a very light storyline setting the games a few years on from the titles they're based off. Pump it full of fan service, references, easter eggs, make all of the pokemon available according to region, and you'd please a fair few nostaglic pokemon fans I think. It would also work as a great way to make 'pokedex catch-ups' more fun/accessible.
Crystal Clear just proved to me that even two generations of pokemon games are enough to serve as a semi-stable foundation for a more open-world experience, I can't imagine what Game Freak could do with what they have now.
Why wouldn't it work? Game design is wizardry, and Pokemon isn't its own league in terms of gameplay comparative to most RPG so it simply boils down to whether they want it or nah.
Super pissed my Poke-Y cartridge is gone. It went missing 2 years ago and it had all my Shiny Eeveelutions on it, bred from Crystal onwards including a tanky Umbreon.
Tempte to get Ultra Sun but at the same time I feel like I might as well just wait until the next generation.
The Ultra games are legit to start gen VI, go for it.
External factors, mostly. Pokemons target audience, their conventions, etc. I'm all for Pokemon experimenting with new types of game design and delivering innovation where it's sorely needed in the mainline games, but I don't think that the mainline games should become any more open than like, being able to pick gyms in different orders.
It's just my personal opinion, of course, but I think a spin off game where Game Freak could fully shed some of the linear conventions of the game series would work better when/if they approach the open world format. Pokemon Let's Go proves that they're willing to stretch the mainline formula into other niches, so thats why I think a spin off title would be a more natural fit.
In terms of innovation, they just need to pull another gen 5 aka the BEST gen. Of course, a spinoff wouldn't hurt.
So when did pokemon ease up in-game requirements to transfer within generations? I just started up my first playthrough of Ultra Sun and found I could dump all of my Mons from pokemon bank into my brand new save. I seem to remember previous pokemon games gating that sort of stuff out until the post game, usually requiring a national dex or something.
It's pretty cool to start my new adventure off with a bunch of favorite mons from my crystal clear run.
I think you and me both know that Gen V was a one-time thing and we're probably never gonna get something as good again. Gen VII was close to V imo, but was missing quite a few things and botched some others (lack of PSS for example).
You can only break so much mold at once.
Gen V still feels unfinished to me; BW2 lacked closure.
I felt sorta the same way because the time between Gen 5 and 6 seemed so short, but then gen 6 happened and was actually unfinished.
