idk I think battling is a great way to test the wild pokemon's mettle. You get a preview of what they are and capable of instead of just tossing balls at it.
Also catching everything to level up would just be a bit silly.
I do kinda miss wild pokemon battles tbh. I could take or leave the catching mechanic but I'd like to actually battle the wild pokemon still.
Also I'm not a big fan of all that exp you get from wild encounters and how every pokemon gets exp when you do anything. I always turned off exp all in the newer games just because it made your team so OP that it took a lot of the fun out for me.
Also note that with no wild battles, False Swipe basically becomes useless. Not only does the GO capture mechanic not belong in the core series, but it ruins a lot of other mechanics.
I'm not sure why people are being so apologetic and "okay" with it. I didn't play the series for over 15 years just for some people who never played the games to change the way it's played.
I guess unpopular opinion: I really like the removal of random battles. I HATED getting constantly pulled out of the game to do some dumb battle with some dumb low-level trash. It was a waste of time. Now I toss a ball at it and still get the XP. Cool beans. Capturing is a lot more fun now too, especially with the Ball Plus.
Repels
You got exp for capturing pokemon in xy and SM/USUM. This is not a new thing.
I really don't see why they couldn't've combined the mechanics. Weaken a pokemon through battle, then switch to the new pokeball thing.
this is not an unpopular opinion
i dont understand why people cannot separate the two concepts
the catching and encounter mechanics are two things, they arent really connected and don't require each other to operate properly
i feel very few people actually like random encounters, they only really existed because of limitations on the NES and gameboy
I'd rather spend my pokedosh on something that isn't a built-in gameplay feature to stop another gameplay feature.
Also, isn't it weird how there's an item made specifically to cut out a large chunk of the gameplay? It's almost like they knew it sucked.
Hopefully they bring over the pokemon appearing on the overworld instead of randomly if only because it's cute, but keep the wild battles because the motion controls for capture seem to be hell from what I've seen and not everyone is gonna play their switch on portable mode
For me the new system is an even exchanged between the old: instead of spending money on Pokeballs and Repels to avoid the battles, you're buying Pokeballs and Lures to get the candy you want and just avoid the fights you don't want to do. Then we have the Trainer fights, where you either go buy healing items or head back to the nearest town to use the free healthcare, but here you more or less ignore trainer fights because they yield fuck all for experience and just spend the money on Pokeballs that aren't coming out of your ears because they rain down from you and start with 50 of them. If you ask me the people at Game Freak either took it upon themselves or Nintendo pushed them to shove in the Go mechanics because that's what the kids are into today, but I will never be sure because I think these games struggle to find what niche it wants to fit into.
I'm not enjoying the Pokemon GO capturing mechanics at all. There's no strategy to it. In the real games there are many different factors that you must keep in mind when capturing a pokemon. Which of your pokemon can tanks the hits, the level differences between you and the pokemon, figure out what moves will kill or not, getting the pokemon's health low enough for easier capture, utilize the different status effects for easier capture, prolonging the battle could lead to the pokemon struggling, etc etc etc.
But in Lets Go, the only factors that come into play when capturing is the timing and if you use a berry or not. It's fucking boring.
Oh and don't forget the Pokemon could just flee at any moment, which is probably the most irritating thing in the game for me so far. Lemme just waste 10 ultra balls on a single pokemon only for it to leave for absolutely no reason. How rewarding.
I didn't play the series for so long just to have people like you come along and tear everything down for your benefit. It's alienating and disgusting.
I can't evolve the starter and carry around a Raichu or Vaporeon.
That would have been my "ok fine I'll give this a try" feature but they decided not to.
Sigh.
A middleground would be having to fight Pokemon and weakening them when they are around your experience and level when you fight them, but if you are way above the levels of certain Pokemon it could switch to the Go mechanic of capturing them.
Having an optional system to toggle between new and old capture mechanic on the fly will satisfy most.
OR they could just bring back Safari and use the GO mechanic there. Everyone's happy.
Just have the Go mechanic activate when you throw a pokeball, and have an option to turn it off entirely. Best of both worlds. You can weaken the pokemon and capture them traditionally, try and go for a fancy ball throw off the bat, or a combination of both.

The absence of the GTS in these games is beyond frustrating.
I've been sitting here for almost 2 hours trying to find someone who will trade an ekans for sandshrew and I'm either getting people with the same version as me, or people with the other version who have no idea what I'm trying to communicate because this system is so poorly designed.
I really fucking miss the PSS.
Aw, they didn't show Farfetch'd walking animation.

It tosses the leek to itself and flies when you run, but marches on the ground when you walk.

Remember that this is a thing.
One thing I just noticed that's unfortunate is that they de-edged the Pokedex entries of Mega Evolutions. No more "Mega Evolution also affects its brain, leaving no other function except its destructive instinct to burn everything to cinders." or "It tries to take the lives of anyone and everyone, including its trainer."
Aw man I really wanted super edgy Mega Evoultion facts about how Mega Evolution just turns every Pokemon into harbingers of pain because evolution broke every bone in their body or something.
Meh, that made Mega Evolution feel like animal cruelty. Good riddance.
Looking around his channel and some links later I find out he made at least 110 images of models with animations from other models. SMD format at its finest.

I love Pokemon, but I'll always resent the people who make it because of shit like this. I get that it's primarily a children's game and you don't want them to have a potentially M-Rated experience online in an E-Rated game. But name me one fucking reason why you can't toss a Pokemon online and tick a series of boxes that will auto-trade it for whatever you're looking for in this the year of our lord 2018.
Better still, why is there no option to have the GTS sync with your Dex and give you the option to offer up whatever Pokemon you're putting up for trade in exchange for literally anything you're currently missing from the Dex? There's over 700 of the little bastards, I'm drowning in Sandygasts from shiny breeding and I specifically need a Magmar, do you know what the odds are of me finding someone in the exact opposite predicament?
Other Nintendo exclusives have these insane quality of life additions, yet Pokemon (fun as it is) still feels like it's fighting the player in some respects. I'm pretty sure the last time I looked at a new Pokemon game and said "oh that's actually a great feature they added", I'd just picked up Soul Silver and hit the "never stop running" button.
I want Pokemon Company to fuckup and make a Pokemon game that's equivalent in edge to Intro of Shadow the Hedgehog.
