It was something players set up on the server a year ago, prior to the ocean update. With some weird advantage of game mechanics, if you open a gate while holding a fishing rod that was directly in front of a water block, it cast the rod for a moment. If you rig your keyboard controls where that same button is your space bar and put a heavy enough object on the bar, you'll constantly open/shut the gate, and thus constantly cast the rod into the water over and over. After a while you begin to instant catch stuff.
I was never entirely competent in how it mechanically worked. There is one in my medieval town I built ages ago.
I believe there is a new afk fishing contraption required now, but it's still possible.
Are there any mods to give minecraft a more satisfying system of progression? More bosses, more things to explore, etc? I really want to have fun with minecraft but its like within 15 minutes you find diamonds and then it feels like the game becomes pretty aimless other than killing the ender dragon, and its not satisfying at all when you come out at the end.
it's time for the daily shameless plug of Knockout Minecraft: Knockout Minecraft
several mods adding content, challenge, adventure etc, all nicely configured to work together, without those crazy industry mods that add 800000 machines that you have to learn
look up scicraft. A lot of people get diamonds, make a diomond set build a cozy cottage and farm maybe do a redstone thing before giving up halfway through because its too confusing then just up and quit. Fewer show any competence in redstone and fewer still understand and can apply redstone to automate the game for them ala scicraft.
Minecraft has... a lot more depth than just mining diamonds and building houses:

There's redstone and then there's robotics.
