S.T.A.L.K.E.R Series Megathread: Maybe someday games releasing edition

First impressions are unfortunately everything. I downloaded the mod, played it for about half an hour, saw it heavily reused a lot of the same assets, sound effects, and gameplay mechanics as CoM, Last Day, and Anomaly, and decided I was done.
I've played enough of CoM-based mods to realize that I don't like them. I'd rather have something more adhering to the vanilla formula.
Stalker community in a nutshell:
-We want story for CoC!
-We want stuff and crafting from Misery!
-We want nice graphic but dont touch graphic because it destroy atmosphere!
-We want new models and better graphic but we still want to play on potato computers!
-We want realism, but dont make it realistic!
-Give us your addon/mod! How long you gonna make it for God sake?!
-You spend few years doing mod and you dont know if you finish it? We dont care, give it to us now!
No matter what you give to players they will always complain.... :]
It's kinda throwing me off that the posts aren't dated anymore. It's all just "7 years ago".
Well, the stalker community isn't homogeneous. Different people like different things. That being said, most people in general hate artificial difficulty.
I'm having cautios fun with Dead Air, really digging the crafting system, even if the good stuff seems to be behind the technician perk. Weapon repair is also a bit overkill, with most things seemingly just single use to fix one thing when there's like 4-8 broken components. Luckily there's settings to fix the weapon drops to not be completely rotten weapons and increasing rewards and such so that you can actually afford a loaf of bread.
Medkits should also be way more common when they're this underpowered, along with all the foods just killing you slowly.
So, Misery is still a miserable base to build a mod upon, surprise.
We're all old farts now. Anyone gonna let their children play stalker soon?
SOUP Experiences > Hyper-Pseudo-Realistic Suffer Simulators.
For me, STALKER has always been about strange places and experiences in an uncomfortable and unfamiliar setting. The SOUPs and COCs are what I dig about the game - it's just a shame that new maps don't seem to come easy because I have vanilla (and some beta?) maps baked into my head. The newer SOUPs having huge, wild questlines ontop of a kitchen-sink of maps is where it's at.
One of my favorite mods was this russian-english half-machine translated mod that was polished up where it had a handful of maps completely changed so they looked like new ones and some new ones too
I can't remember the name of it but it was really just more STALKER + a weapons mod and some new quests, I think it was only a few hours but it was infinitely preferable to replaying Cordon again
It's funny because mods are what kept me interested at first but as was said the later mods are what make me lose interest in STALKER. Installing a shiny new mod and seeing "oh it's just the same content but harder and with a different skin" only ever worked the first 1 or 2 times, after that it just becomes something I uninstall after 2 hours.
gunslinger never ever
I remember the first time I played SoC forever ago. Was barely hitting 10 FPS on the shitshow of a laptop but I was determined to finish the damn thing despite it taking forever.
I first played it on a shitty pentium 4 PC
after about 30 minutes of gameplay the game would suddenly slow to a crawl
Finishing the game like that was a special experience
Latest news.
Lost Alpha 1.07 to be released this month. It will have A-Life enabled, one additional map, and more

NS Joint Pak 2.1 English to be released this month.
The biggest and probably best Stalker mod of all times? The mod will have handwritten english translation, more than 60 locations (almost all of those in existence), it will take more than 1 year to finish. But it will also offer an option for faster finish, skipping some of the stuff. It has hundreds of non-generic quests. A female faction added. Key NPCs (for the story) made stronger. Some stuff from the COP engine implemented. New features and options. God mode option for Cave. New mutants (including flying) and weapons. System requirements will be relatively low, probably lower than those for COP. It will have engine improvements and deployable backpacks that do not cause lag when filled with lots of stuff.
It is based on the well known Narodnaya Solyanka. It should be very well polished, since this is a third major upgrade of Narodnaya
Solyanka, after JP 1 and JP 2. It should be different than stock NS, as most of its quests will be redone and improved, in addition to the huge new content.
Mod is being tested now and supposedly will be released this December, probably after 10 days.

Could this end up putting CoC on linux? Like, it's awesome. but why?
why not?
Using cross-platform APIs and libraries will make Stalker more portable. No reason not to aim for that.
Also CoC already runs pretty well on Linux with Wine and DXVK. I even wrote a small guide for it some time ago: Running Call of Chernobyl on Linux with Wine tutorial
Having native binaries would of course be better.
Why not? This is great for preserving these games going forward - As VodkaChicken said, more platform portability is good, and this could lead to native Linux/Mac/whatever ports as well.
Can't wait to play some good ol' Call of Pripyat on my IoT Smart Toaster.
The master xd_dev branch of openxray seems to be functional on Linux if you are willing to compile it yourself right now. It's a bit unstable but the fact that it even runs is pretty incredible imo.
That mod from first paragraph - it was Wind of Time / Wind of Change? It was really cool but ending was complete mess.
Wrong
Stage 1 of 5 = completed
I agree totally! but then why not go with vulkan? Isn't OpenGL being phased out of most mainstream platforms?
I think that's a future goal. OpenGL is probably an easier target as Vulkan would require a much better understanding of the game's renderer.
I don't think OpenGL will go anywhere any time soon. It will continue to be a viable backup solution if nothing else. Khronos group's original plan was for Vulkan and OpenGL to coexist since Vulkan and OpenGL are very different beasts.
Only Apple is deprecating OpenGL since they seem to hate everything that they can't control directly. That's why they only use their OC donut steal Metal API.

There's a really fancy built-in mod manager, seems like they want to push community mods for it with easy to manage and install little packages.

Most of these came with the installer and can be toggled on and off whenever.
Thank GOD I don't have to install some shady russian bitcoin miner . exe to patch it up.
I thought for a second about what S.T.A.L.K.E.R. with workshop would be like, but then I realized merging mods would be horrible.
