I looked at how this guy did it then I tried making a city similar to his until I got a feel for where I should take things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=px0SF43Pahw
I don't know if mine is a good city or if I just really like it because I made it, but for half my building I just zones out what the little bars told me were needed, and as I learned about things. That left a pretty organic looking city since there's a huge residential area, with some light commercial dotting around, then the central area is a couple blocks of high commercial bordering Industry, which is across a highway and a line of commercial from the wind farms and real farms. Then there's the university and some empty space that goes back into high residential and then low residential and then high again, which is neat because it's like a "valley" of houses between the more dense areas. That was the result of urban sprawl happening between my "old" city and the new planned high density area, which is the first area I planned, although not very well to be honest. Below that is a coastal road with luxury housing which I designed specifically because I wanted a high class neighborhood there. Anyway once my town went over to the railroad tracks, I plopped a trainstation and built my second and third planned districts, the area between these isn't as interesting because it's just filled in with high residential. The other side of the tracks is where I learned about the European styling so it has a completely different look from the rest of town, and has grown into my largest district yet. Having expanded far enough East, I went North of this new commercial district and built a financial district, it's a mess and I kind of hate it, but it is what it is. Across the tracks from it are more residential, low and high density, and the new green housing since I got Green Cities on sale. Anyway I don't think I'll make anything more unique than this one because it was a product of learning and building things as I went on. Now that I have all the information (and DLC's) that I do, I don't think I can recreate the style I ended up with.

I download way too many mods so I can make urban sprawls in the desert rife with gang violence. https://steamuserimages-a.akamaihd.net/ugc/945087593339068649/432CF59B76B5F522923D85A41864266E153C3F13/
Reservations Skylines
We really need a crime focused DLC.
One of the only things that's holding me back from getting Skylines is that it just looks a bit off. Cities have kind of a fake quality to them? I know it's a dumb reason for what is obviously a good game but I'm just kind of a stickler for that stuff. I grew up in a city and it's just weird seeing, like, belts of grass between buildings and stuff. How much of that can you redress just from modding? @Vosk seems like you managed.
a lot https://i.redd.it/itkvmi0cekv11.jpg https://i.redd.it/4b28kf7i4kv11.jpg https://i.redd.it/yso2qh6x8ub01.jpg (examples from reddit not mine) you can change grassy terrain to concrete/gravel pretty much anywhere, you can also vastly change the character of your city by getting a different LUT (color correction profile) so things look less cartoony
dang
that last image is just grove street, basically. even a lot of the people are wearing green in that image. pretty damn good.
The green sabre is even there, what the hell.
what the fuck that looks amazing

Why are the offices so damn hard to level? My commercial district is fuckin' rich as hell and has the second highest land value in the city and even slightly attractive to tourists (who usually only like unique buildings), but these stupid offices have nearly every service and decent land value and still won't go to Level 3. I ended up designating an IT cluster nearby just because I wanted some skyscapers in the office distinct.
Do you have good education in the city? It's an easy thing to underestimate.
Good enough that half my factory workers are college educated.
I really hope Cities adds stuff like class and a proper crime system. Don't get me wrong, the game's sweet as hell but it feels really strange having no class divide or stuff like social unrest with riots or any sort of politics. Maybe its too big for a DLC though.
That's more of a Tropico thing I'd say.
Nah some things like Health and Crime are way too basic right now. The health system actually irks me because there's actually no use for hospitals. As long as a house has healthcare, it will never get sick, so your clinics will for the most part have zero patients; which makes the hospital's main draw, the capacity and vehicle fleet, irrelevant as long as you have clinics covering most of town. The only time people can get sick with a clinic around is if you zone residential next to industry or kill your entire city with poop water. Not sure how it's determined, but there's one clinic in my city that handles 90% of ambulance calls while my hospital does nothing all day every day, and it still doesn't fill up because the only people getting sick are the ones at the furthest reaches of the city. Crime is too basic because as it is right now, police cars instantly remove 100% of "crime" which is just represented by a darker color on a building. I'm not sure how "crime" is calculated because it does not correlate at all with arrests, so joining those two would be an improvement already. But I'm not convinced it isn't just a random spike with zero factors influencing it considering I've seen the "crime is high" alert pop up right next to a police station only to vanish when the next squad car drove by. Overall it's even easier than clinics because it'll cover both the area around it plus squad cars automatically patrol any area with high crime and instantly reduce it to zero.

Pretty great addition, but Rule the Waves has spoiled me for ship design and I probably won't be happy with anything less than what that game offered. Would also look forward to seeing more in depth for the tanks and planes like they suggested they might, but their reason for avoiding it sucks ass.
I demand to be able to make WW2 version of Supreme Commander's Fat Boy!

"Rating Summary: This is a strategy game in which players must save present-day Earth from an alien invasion. As players manage resources, research weapon technology, and monitor alien presence, they can dispatch squads of soldiers to attack human- and insect-like creatures in turn-based combat. From a 3/4-top-down perspective, players use assault rifles, grenades, and other military-grade weapons to kill nearby enemies. Battles are accompanied by intermittent cutscenes that depict close-up (e.g., over-the-shoulder) instances of violence: soldiers getting impaled or beaten to death by alien creatures; realistic explosions that result in larger blood sprays. If an alien “implants” an egg into a dead human, the character will eventually explode amid additional gibbing effects. Some scenes depict dead or dying soldiers whose bodies are burned or mutilated. The words “f**k,” “sh*t,” and “a*shole” can be heard in the dialogue." It was the Chryssalid animation.
