They're fixing this in the next patch. Apparently it was a bug?
Quill18 is doing a HOI4 tutorial series

Yeah just read if you install the beta patch it's fixed? I've got like 5 minutes before I head to work so I'll check that later. Thanks for letting me know, I honestly thought it was a limitation that they'd put on ironman, good to know it was just a bug.
Today I learned that you can forge a bloodline that embalms people alive for display in a grotesque banquet of your imprisoned victims.
This was after I got tired of my liege kingdom talking shit and burning my trade posts for the hell of it. Said king now holds a duchy with a significantly smaller family after I put a third of his family to the sword and another third in the depths of the oubilette. Hail to the Grand Prince Mayor.
Already some thirty eight kills into a murder spree I decided to take the ambition to form a bloodline and proceeded to put five entire Patrician families in the dirt. I now control virtually every trade zone around the western side of the Iberian peninsula.
I think I've found a new love for this game.
So in the current game of EU4, my friend started as Denmark. He colonized Canada first and made Vinland, released them as an independent nation and played as them. Turned around and invaded his mother nation and formed Scandinavian Scandinavia. Also Scandinavian Siberia hovers over Scandinavian Iceland. Meanwhile I'm trying to take over all of Italy starting as Milan and Hungary PO'ed Austria and Annexed them and holds part of Italy along with the Ottoman Empire. Which happens to control all of Russia and fields and 500,000 sized army.
I liked it, there were some interesting concepts, going into it without any civ 5 experience it was quite playable though it was pretty quickly abandoned. its now a what-if for what civ 6 could have been with its non linear tech tree and harmony focuses. the single biggest annoyance was how much easier it was to win by mind flower than anything else, to the point that one had to disable it as a victory condition to even win any other way.
You know what'd be nice, if Paradox could make HOI4 not run like ass.
Remove South America.
Honestly this new update makes the game run even worse than before because thanks to all the new randomness wars tend to last longer and have more participants which means more AI to calculate thus causing the game to drag to a crawl. God help you if your game runs past 1945, and you may as well shoot yourself if you reach 1950 or higher.
Also, now that we've gotten a ship designer what are the odds we'll get a tank and/or plane designer? Place your bets!
Pretty high, though honestly those things should be part of the free update.
and south east asia, that thing looks like an ant colony when the Axis AI decides to send its entire army to bog down SEA
I just got HoI4 how do I win game
Make tank and oil silos.
20 wide infantry and don't be france
Don't let wars last 1950 at the latest. By this point the AI is in Uber mode and it's a pain in the ass to make any movement without nuking the shit out of every region before an advance.
Isn't the meta 40 width now?
Seriously, the AI can go bananas if you let them, even minor nations can pose as a serious roadblock if given the chance to buildup. In my game that went to 1958, before I just fuckin gave up, I quickly found out that my invasion of the USA and Canada through Alaska was a waste of real life time. They were so bunkered down and had so many divisions and aircraft(over 20000 planes between them!) that without serious firepower, and nukes, I could barely take one state. That coupled with the fact that the supply limit is so low in this game that it was impossible to get the number of troops I needed in the area to force a breakthrough.
I would have invaded them sooner but my fucking stupid allies bogged me down in a war with China and Japan which completely fucked over my plans. I really wish they'd make diplomacy in this game better. I wish there was an option where only the faction leader could declare war because it really sucks when your tiny allies decide they want to fight some other tiny nation on the other side of the world who has a bunch of much bigger friends. Part of the problem was that the USA and Canada were keeping most of their troops in North America for some reason so nearly all of their military was on the homefront. As far as I could tell they were only sending volunteers.
Don't think so. From my own attempts it's been diminishing returns with recent changes to combat, seemingly.
that doesn't prevent 1 tiny nation declaring war on another then joining the axis or allies and starting ww2 in 1936
In that case you just ignore their call to arms.
If anyone is wondering how Stellaris on consoles work

A tank designer will happen eventually no doubt, and would be way more impactful than the ship designer. Playing through the game as Germany with quantity or the USSR with quality armoured vehicle builds would be interesting. Then of course you'd still have the US who's like "Why not both?!" and the UK who's like "This tank needs to climb walls".
or better yet, every uk tank is just a variant on the churchill
Well. If they add a tank designer that would be very interesting to see how they balanced it, seeing as what you research for AA guns are often what was also converted into tank use like the FlaK 18/36, and the American 90MM for guns like the Pershing, Jackson, etc.
They already have TDs, Mechanized AA and SP-A tho'. Those all factor into division stats.
Been reading the patch note for the 1.6.1 beta patch and some of them are kinda funny.
- Double-clicking on enemy task force icons no longer lets you select their fleets and disband them
- De Gaulle should no longer be able to play 4D chess and rule both Vichy France and Free France.
- Trotsky should no longer be able to lead an uprising in the Soviet Union while also ruling Mexico.
- McArthur should no longer be able to lead armies on the Democratic side of the US civil war, while leading the Fascist side. De Gaulle should now no longer be available as a general for Vichy France.
- Fixed 3D model viewer entities making noises in Germany
- MacArthur will no longer lead the Loyalists while also fighting as a field marshal for the Constitutionalists.
