I would give it a try but I'm actually playing with the Prepare to Die Again mod. Also, I remember trying Rekindled mod back then and the changes where a lot of fun, I have to try that mod again.
It's the effort behind the mod that I appreciate while the mod itself is eh. They have managed to do a lot, especially when most of DS modding is basically text editing. Though a lot of changes are questionable, and some are downright pointless. There's several spots where they've moved a bonfire, to the opposite side of where it already was.
Remember when everyone took Vaati as gospel, even though he kept pushing shit like the Iron King literally being named Ichorus Earth even though it was so obvious that they... were talking about, you know. Ichorus earth. Like , dirt. Yeah I love this community sometimes.
Could be worse, the modder could have a toxic online persona while going "My fanon's SUPERIOR because I MADE IT HAPPEN!"
imo my biggest issue with Dark Souls 3 is that it paid way too much homage to the first game, everything feels like they just existed because they were in the first game rather than providing anything new to the narrative or gameplay. I really wish they went the way of Final Fantasy with the story with just "an undead's journey to link the fire" as a recurring element and really have an brand new world for the sequel instead of shoving all the Dark Souls references in it for no reason.
As far as callbacks go I like Siegward as a character, and I guess that the point of him is to contrast with Siegmeyer despite their similar appearances and goofy demeanor, given how absolutely shocked I was when he just charged into battle. In that sense, he probably validates his callback status at least a little in how he plays off of the original character. However, there's probably nothing inherently about him that demands him to be a callback character down to the armour and name. I could very easily have looked at him and his attitude in a unique set of armour and gotten the same "oh, so you're our siegmeyer" reaction from him. All in all DS3 seems like it really could have used another year in the oven to flesh out its own identity a lot more.
I never understood this about the Souls community. "I don't like the sequel because it's got stuff from the previous games in it." Yeah, that's what a sequel generally is.
Yeah... DS3 is a direct sequel to 1. The only time it was a problem was 2, which genuinely felt like it had all these original ideas and then someone came in and went "Make it about linking the fire again and the lord souls" even though everything involving the Throne of Want was completely separate and interesting.
The backbone of the series's premise being about a repeating cycle made all of the 'callbacks' feel fine to me. There's plenty enough content in the game and I think they remixed what was there in justified ways.
All the games are good, I like all of them.
So are there any other dark souls remix or overhaul mods worth a damn? Daughters of ash is alright but has all those issues too. And I mean other than randomizer mods.
Not when a sequel mostly stands on the legs of the previous work without featuring an identity of its own. Being a sequel to something doesn't mean being strictly derivative, at the very least in the world of videogames
i like having things from previous games but there were a couple things in dark souls 3 that felt pretty forced, which is when it goes from a nice callback to the ever-so-overused RLM quote of "I clapped when I saw it" like when the bat wing demons carry you in a cutscene after vordt, that always felt pretty dumb to me
The whole swamp section and lighting the fires was probably my least favorite part of DS3.
The swamp sections always are terrible though, all the way back to Valley of Defilement, which kills my attempts to replay Demon Soul's because it's that unfun Poison environments in general are pretty bad, they become a game of either waiting 15 seconds after every walk for the meter to go down, endlessly eating items or just accepting your fate and chugging some Estus now and again
Swamp sections are the new water level
I liked the thing with the crystal sage's enormous hat as well, Big Hat Logan's hat was pretty big but it was still somewhat reasonable, but after centuries of him turning from a man into a mythic being and almost a god of magic, they ended up at these enormous floppy monstrosities
Seeing all those overhaul mods for DS1 makes me wish we had some for DS2. There's definitely room for improvement, at the very least where enemy placement is concerned.
There is Second Sin mod if you feeling replaying the game with a different enemy placement.
Thanks, I'll try it out.
DS3's swamp would've been much better and interesting if it'd worked so that the poison hits you only if you roll. That and poison damage not being so laughably pathetic.
Call me crazy but I enjoyed the DS3 Swamp, It caused just the right amount of anxiety and gave it some replayability since it wouldn't be feasible to explore the whole thing at once due to the poison
those big guys with the trees, gives me shivers
Yeah man. Even the sound of the gru things running underneath you while youre over some bridge worked well to set the atmosphere

I know this is entirely unrelated to everything, but I only today found out about the Status icon for the Cat's Ring in Demon Souls when I equipped it and felt the need to share https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/229519/372041cc-6f91-4062-b8e4-bf305144653d/Demon Souls Cat's Ring.png

Part of me wants to get Remastered on the Switch just for the novelty of trudging through Lordran on the go. The other part of me is terrified to try get through Blighttown on it
Just use the master key and go the back way. You skip literally all the bullshit.
Only cowards skip Blighttown You gotta embrace the bullshit
