The Source modding community in a nutshell, folks.
And we love it.
I wanna see how those models look, sonuds like interesting stuff
I'm not sure about the source files, I don't really do modelling so I don't know what source files entails in that regard. An example of the files I have are:
Grunt_Engineer.dx80.vtx
Grunt_Engineer.dx90.vtx
grunt_Engineer.mdl
Grunt_Engineer.phy
Grunt_Engineer.sw.vtx
grunt_engineer.vvd
grunt_engineer.txt (Playermodel version only)
They're separated into NPC and Player categories, I have Grunt_01 through Grunt_09, Balaclava (white and black), Engineer, Medic, and Gasmask (white and black). No SAW guy as far as I can see or remember.
I'm interested, you can send, and I will talk to my friend who works togheter in this
YES, THESE ARE! Oh my god. I can't believe that after almost a decade these have been Lost & Found.
This is the original OC thread where Taggart presented them for those who are curious. All the phots are gone at this point due either Imageshack or Dropbox, however.
Dawww. Oh well, it was too perfect to be true ( after all it was the last model being done ). The medic and commander variants survived so we have them, thankfully.
I work with ShadowRun in this project, when I have time, maybe the V4 can include these variations, I have a cool ideia for the skins. But I think the great challenge will be put the BMS heads in that and make the specific medic model works
See the link in my response below.
Yeah they were still being worked on when I got them, that might be why the Balaclava goggles are busted. They weren't actually released yet and I got them because I knew enough members of the OC team to get it cleared
Here they are, just as I had received them many years ago.
I wouldn't be wrong if half the custom content in GoldSrc and Source is being preserved because people keeps them in their private stashes
So yea after getting hold of the pack I was able to examine them: as suspected the balaclava and engineer variants are just ported HL1 HD meshes ( while the balaclava has a better new texture, the engineer is just the default HD OF stuff ) Fixing the glasses should take me no time ( although I'll unable to do something until the weekend ). Interesting enough, while sadly there's no SAW variants as they were being the last ones being worked, the facemaps for the white and black versions are there, so if we can trace back their heads ( I think is either the HL2 ones, or the ones present at the Enhanced Citizens ), we could just add to them a bandana and call it done ( and if we want, add an ammo belt and a tripod to their torsos ). We will rework them to have skins, bodygroups and LODs, as well as functional flexes.
Also on the files there's an unused alternative camo:

Thank you so much, Mr Someguy.
You're welcome, I'm glad I could help!
Wow, I'll never forget that I so much loved Romka's hgrunts from OC back when I was younger that I even used 3D Ripper DX to get the models because they were encrypted because Romka wasn't a big fan of Facepunch (or was it gmod?)
A few weeks after I finally managed to get some of them working he decided to release them (not encrypted) lol
Good old times.. I guess
starting to get v excited to visit xen again
Romkas grunts have certainly showed their age, you can tell it's from the earlier source modding era.
The one thing from Xen I'm interested to see is Gonarch's Lair, if only because I feel it's the weakest part of HL1 overall and I want to see how they've ended up handling it.
I'm hoping somewhere in there we get a vista like the first Xen map. It doesn't have to be right at the beginning (get the feeling that's gonna be in that cave area we've seen a few times), but somewhere I want to see that lonely island with the three towers.
They said Q1 2019, right?
Got my new computer all set up and ready for a complete play-through, and it's just around the corner- legitimately excited!
What do you reckon my chances of timing it right by starting the full play through now? lol
It might be May, because the Black Mesa Incident took place that month.
But I think the visual works great for BM, well, I don't like the new design, I preffer the old school grunts, short sleeves, with a backpack, and a PCV
IMO Black Mesa's grunts just don't have anywhere near as much character as OG style HECU. I get that they wanted a more realistic, up-to-date and grounded look (and that's totally fine, that's their vision) but it just doesn't work for me personally. I have a huge soft spot for the Half-Life series grunts and the 90's military aesthetic is a big part of why I like them.
nostalgia goggles & you've grown up.
Nostalgia has nothing to do with good design.
As someone who has never experienced HL at an early age to really pick favorites between that and BM, I rather prefer the grunts... gruntier look. They look badass, mean, and something you'd definitely want to shoot.
BM grunts fulfill these.
Ages ago when they had the bad voice acting then I would've agreed. Except that got fixed.
Really, some of the elaborated complaints about BM come down to "it isn't hl1". Cool, it isn't.
I'd like it if the grunts in black mesa looked closer to their equivalent 90's counterparts rather than operators with fast helmets

I like the original marine designs cuz of Opposing Force, I like the whole PCV thing and HECU and such.
Thankfully there is a mod on the workshop (as seen above) that caters to that for me
It's not really nostalgia when Half-Life: Echos only came out a few months ago, or in my case I've played through HL1 WGH to compare it to Black Mesa's rendition. I'm torn on the voices because while the HL1 voice was really cool, I do like the new voice actor because he does a good job (Mod release's voice acting so bad I made a FEAR Replica Soldier replacement pack). I think my main complaint with the voices are that he never says "We've got hostiles" even though there's literally a chapter named after that vocalization, and the fact that I almost never heard them speak, they have so many voice lines in the game and I realized after my recent playthrough I hadn't heard 1/4th of what's in there. Maybe that's just a bug though, or maybe they speak too quietly to be audible. As for the style I don't consider it a big deal since we have the Romka pack for whoever wants it, and v4's gonna be even better if those new models are used (Ski mask's long awaited return?).
To me what bothers me more than the voice is they don't feel as 'hardcore' as they used to, and this is due to two major changes. First off we're fighting a larger number of less significant enemies instead of a smaller number of elite enemies. Squads of 3-4 from HL1 are now squads of 6 or 7 in BM, and Marines often appear in places which were previously empty or populated by aliens. The classic 3 round controlled bursts vs BM's automatic fire play a role as well, the calm 3 round burst gave off an air of cold professionalism even under extreme duress, while the 15 round bursts of Black Mesa's HECU feel a lot more frantic (though it does make more sense for point-blank encounters). The result is it feels less like we're battling our way through a smaller fearless commando unit, and more like slogging through an Army of rookies. Side-note, I was late to the party with HL1, so the whole crouch to shoot, sprint to move thing was new and interesting to me, it made them stand out as a human enemy more than any other game because they didn't just run around laying on the trigger like I was used to at the time (I played HL1 for the first time in 2006 or 2007).
The 2nd major difference is the dynamic between the HECU and the Aliens due to the Marines being a bit weaker but also due to differences in both's AI. In HL1 a single HECU Marine could usually kill a Bullsquid by himself, in BM a single Bullsquid can wipe out a 5 man squad. This is mainly due to 2 things, the new HECU AI is broken vs projectiles, and Bullsquids no rarely charge. In HL1 the Marine will take a hit or two but stand his ground and fire, while the Bullsquid begins a charge and is cut down. BM Bullsquids rarely charge and instead rely on their much stronger spitting attack, while HECU AI is completely broken when certain projectiles become involved; the AI prioritizes dodging projectiles in all situations over everything else, which means they spend 90% of their time running in circles until they die (A similar problem occurs with Alien Grunts and their Hornets).
I hope this doesn't sound complainy, I know you hate that. These are just my thoughts on the subject.
man something about the research facility is so indescribably 90s. i've thought about it repeatedly over and over again i still haven't figured out how to summarize it succinctly. maybe some weird hybrid memory of school buildings, publicly funded american architecture, the vaguely education bill nye style side characters, the inescapable office environment of the era. and it has that soft trek TNG color palette but more grounded in the approaching new millennium, all the 80s scifi fixtures boiled down into 90s de facto appliances. it's such a time capsule, such a case study in that specific time it was made. it's not magic or nostalgia either, one has to assume valve was pretty intently focused on crafting a setting a that was immersive and believable for the time. and for how barebones and different xen was it was still consistent into the last chapters of the game for even more indescribable reasons.
Stargate Command is pretty close to it n live action.
for sure
Plus you could do this pretty easily.

My gripe with Black Mesa's grunts is the lack of the voice filters that made them sound like they're wearing masks.
