Mania Plus has a playable small recreation of (part of) Angel Island Act 1 to segue into the new story mode.

Woo! Got the game from Amazon. IT's a bit bended on the box on the right side but I cared more for the Genesis Reverse sleeve so it's all good. I don't like that it's a sleeve rather than a box so it can bend easily if you don't keep the case in it.
I just got the game and I can confirm that you play a small section of Angel Island on Encore Mode, up to the point where you see the Mini-Boss in S3&K on the first time.

Sonic Mania - Encore DLC

SEGA made a video with all of the Episodes together.
While i'm disappointed that the bosses and cutscenes are apparently the same besides Metal Sonic Kai being patched in for the game overall over the lackluster Metal Sonic fight previously, it's still been fun going through Encore Mode so far. Don't expect the world, just tweaked stuff.
Also, Mirage Saloon Act 1 had to be replaced with a rebalanced and all-characters-playable version of Knuckles' act since they probably didn't want to finagle with roster probability for who you have on-hand, and you always fight Heavy King in Lava Reef.
That's a bit of a shame that some of the Knuckles unique stuff is no longer special to him tbh.
I liked the idea of him having his own little detours special to him.
Really hope they simply continue to do DLC for Mania rather than going straight to Mania 2. Would like some stage packs
I wasn't expecting much of a update really, so it's fine.
Well with all the enemies officially in the game code now, along with an expanded choice of assets, they can probably be recreated by fans somewhat. Not the cutscene and whole "Angel Island on fire" part, but still. Heck, once mod support is updated for the newest version, this one mod is already near completion that recreates almost all of Sonic 1.

speaking of DLC, i really hope they release some for TSR. there's only 5 racers left to be revealed and somehow i doubt they'll suit everyones needs. i'm completely boggled as of to why with a universe so full of characters they made the roster so small.
So it turns out I was wrong about Lava Reef, I encountered Heavy Rider. I guess depending on the route you take you can run into Heavy King or Heavy Rider.
Take this with a big old grain of salt, as I believe there was a source for this, but I wouldn't know how to find it since it was a Japanese interview, but I do remember reading that they actually
wanted to do another Sega All Stars game but SEGA basically said "sorry nah Sonic only" and is likely limiting them a lot this time.
Possibly because they think it will reach a wider appeal like this?
And beyond that, in general it seems more like a quickie budget game than the last several ones that had tons of little details and stuff poured into them.
I mean on one hand most kids they probably would try to market a kart racer at today wouldn't even know what the heck is a Daytona Hornet, or who Alex Kidd is. Sonic's always been the most marketable brand SEGA has ever had and doubling down on that isn't really unexpected. On the other hand, SEGA is also consistently braindead in marketing and franchise handling for pretty much everything but Yakuza and Sonic Mania; completely missing why people loved All-Stars Racing Transformed and forcing talented devs to turn it into this Wisp-ridden, no-one-ever-shuts-the-fuck-up-athon snorefest for Team Racing doesn't really surprise me at all.
I don't get why people are still so upset about Wisps. At first we do mistook them for being Colors' exclusive, but at this point they are as much of a staple as Chao.
I didn't particularly like them in Colours, why would I like them now? They wore out their welcome as a mechanic in Colours to begin with.
Both Chao and Wisps were important to the story for the first game they showed up in, which is fine, but after that Chao remained mostly as easter eggs or just people's pets. They had the Chao Garden which gave people a reason to care about them. People got personally invested in Chao.
Meanwhile Wisps after their first game kept coming back with no explanation and direct gameplay involvement. Their gameplay is kinda janky and not very memorable, and story-wise, why are they there? Imagine if there was a button in every game after Unleashed that turned you into the Werehog and nobody ever mentioned that in the game at all.
Plus, I pick up a Chao without anyone yelling "BOOST" at me
It was explained in Sonic Runners that some liked Earth so much, they chose to stay. That has to be canon to some extend...
I shouldn't have to go to a mobile game for that explanation. If you want me to take them as more than glorified powerups, make them make sense inside the game I'm playing. And if you're going to leave them as powerups, make the powerups better than the incredible ability to turn into a Blue Cube. Wow!
My big beefs with Wisps are twofold: one, while they did their job of expanding level design in Colors rather neatly, every game since then they're just slapped onto stages as gimmicks. Not so bad in Generations, since Rocket was barely there and the Spike was awkward but interesting. Really, really bad in Lost World and Forces, where they almost never actually serve much stage purpose aside from a couple instances in the former, otherwise near-always being optional and skipping over level design or for grabbing Red Rings or just metric tons of rings. If you're not gonna use them for anything worthwhile, why bother in the first place when they don't even do anything in the story either? And second, Iizuka and Sonic Team going out of their way before to say that they were going to make Wisps series-standard powerups in direct likening to Mario's was the exact opposite of what they should do for a franchise that is literally the anti-thesis to Mario in the first place.
They did their job in Colors and never mattered since then besides tangling shit up and over-complicating things. No one i've seen ever seems to care about them, and retroactive opinions on Colors for its filler levels and Wisp gimmick challenges are turning some people against even that nowadays.

Sonic 1 on the Switch is going to be 10 dollars.
Sonic 1 should have been $5, and it better be the Christian Whitehead one.
That would require common sense
So, according to Ian Flynn's twitter, SEGA is now mandating that Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic are two separate franchises, and Mighty & Ray can't show up in a modern context.

I think this is a really bad decision for a number of reasons, most of all I'm afraid they're going to split the games in a very obvious way like this. If the lesson SEGA learned from Mania is, instead of improving Modern Sonic games, to just have more Classic Sonic games, I don't think we'll be seeing a lot of Modern Sonic or its cast for a while.
I just hope that this means no more classic sonic in modern games.
I only see this as a good thing. Now Classic Sonic can stay in his realm while Modern Sonic can get full and proper development time without relying on Classic for pointless filler.
That would definitely be best case scenario, but forgive me if I'm wary of Sonic Team giving Modern Sonic proper development, with or without Classic Sonic. Looking at you, Lost World.
People pretty much treat classic Sonic and modern Sonic as different characters anyway. There's always been this diverging path treatment of the franchise post-Adventure as a whole as far as I've seen it.
