Super Smash Bros. V8 - Everyone is here! Except that one character you like.

I personally think effort was placed into making the game as the story cutscenes/interactions between characters are pretty cool, despite any strange contrasts between realistic and cartoony characters. they certainly could have done with more characters from Sony's history, but I'm glad they acknowledged characters like Kat from Gravity Rush. I think what put the nail in the coffin was the gameplay not being as intuitive or unified as Smash Brothers, as the only way to kill people is using supers that all have varying hitboxes for each character.
I can't see why they shouldn't be included. Banjo and Kazooie have a diverse moveset that could easily work and it can show to others how well Microsoft and Nintendo are commited to cooperating with eachother.
Banjo/Kazooie as Duck Hunt echo character.
In pure seriousness though, it is wild that I have no solid idea of any rules that could limit inclusion in SSB:U. It's such a wild roster already that I could believe near anything.
Still kinda letdown that Bomberman didn't make it in. At least we have him as an assist trophy...
lol people said the same sort of thing about bayonetta and look at what happened
please don't expect banjo & kazooie. if it doesn't happen you're just going to be disappointed
The two characters I've placed my bets on are K. Rool (more likely) and Geno (less likely but mii hats make me hopeful)
TBH their chances of getting in at launch have probably been compromised completely since if they were going to be in the game Phil wouldn't have made that tweet since he probably would've been under some sort of NDA
What if he made the tweet to make us think that he should be under NDA so that we lower our expectations and then Samurai comes around the corner "that was my masterplan all along!" , *insert cinematic video of Banjo and Kazooie".
I guess, but it's not very likely (though of course not impossible considering what Sakurai has done in the past)

I just love the match intro screen.
Something that makes me think that Banjo will have the lowest of chances is this: he isn't a japanese designed character.
The only one out of 64 fighters that was designed by non-japanese devs is Diddy and even then, his entire concept was overseen by Miyamoto himself, so it's borderline japanese too.
I'd even go and say Geno has a better chance than Banjo does only because of his origins.
Prove me wrong Nintendo, plz!
I expect Banjo&Kazooie at this point. If they aren't included I will be disappointed, and that's fine. I find Snake, Ryu and Cloud to be less emblematic and relevant to Nintendo's history.
I already feel the same way about Bomberman.
The way I avoid disappointment every new Smash game is pretty simple: Don't expect anything, don't listen to leaks, just quietly acknowledge that you will probably like it regardless of who is or isn't in, and wait for the game to come out.
Seriously. It is literally impossible to be disappointed by doing that. This way every confirmed newcomer is still a pleasant surprise, but you also won't be crushed by the things you got yourself hyped for that were never real to begin with. Win-win.
Banjo and Kazooie would be great, but even if Sakurai wanted it to happen, it would be very dependent on Microsoft. That being said, non-Japanese 3rd party characters in Smash would be quite a shocker. I forget where this was mentioned but if I recall correctly Diddy Kong is the only Western character that has made it into Smash (developed by Rare). Banjo and Kazooie would be a good exception because the games were developed by Rare who had close connections with Nintendo. I don't think Doomguy, Crash, and Spyro have good chances of making the game because of the opposite. Although they will be/recently have been remastered for and ported to the Switch, I think that's the bare minimum that could qualify them.
That being said I would absolutely love Doomguy. I'm sure Sakurai could figure out how to make a toned down moveset for him that doesn't involve bullets but rather energy weapons like Samus/Fox. Even still I imagine it would be risky for Nintendo, because unlike Snake or Bayonetta who are from mature games, I think Doomguy is more recognizable in the West and it would probably be enough to make some kid's parents say no to buying it for them. I imagine Japanese fans would be upset about it too because it's a character they don't recognize or care about. Nintendo weighs pretty heavily when it comes to making family-accessible games for both Western and Eastern audiences.
Third party character speculation is getting crazy and and it's sucked me in. How plausible/likely is a Dark Souls rep? I keep convincing myself that it's possible but I might need someone to let me down easy...
Yeah, sure, the gore can't be there, obviously, but Doomguy could probably still be presented as a brutal character with stuff like grabs, pummeling, and the chainsaw whilst keeping the bloodshed low.
Haha I agree but I'm not sure how the chainsaw would work... Is there anything comparable in the games already? There's plenty of swords but it's a little harder for me to picture a chainsaw working in the same way.
Corrin has a "chainsword" but I can't remember how it works in Smash. Besides, a chainsaw could probably work and would be quite fresh to see.
I'm hoping for Banjo & Kazooie, Rayman, or Rex & Pyra, although I have no clue how they'd make the latter work. If there's no Xenoblade 2 reps I hope at least the music is in.
Also, knowing Microsoft if we got Banjo & Kazooie we'd get their Nuts & Bolts design rather than something based on their classic look. Also it'd be pretty funny if Rayman got in that his fists could count as projectiles that could be reflected. Imagine him getting face punched by his own first or Villager pocketing it and running away. Although I could see that making him underpowered.
if we get doomguy, the chainsaw should be his jab attack
All of his moves are just Bowser Jr. Side B.
Really reminds me of Tekken. It's nice, fluid, and tense.
I had a dream that Waluigi was announced for SmashUlt. But for some reason, he was also shown off with Eggman, who may or may not have been a Bowser Jr. Echo Fighter.
Amusingly, Diddy's existence might be why Rare had an assortment of different Kongs as well.
Originally, Diddy Kong was Donkey Kong Jr with a tail and baseball cap. Miyamoto and the other Nintendo devs told them that the change was too extreme and they'd have to be a new character, and so they went ahead and did so. It's likely why he has a tee shirt as part of his design, due to DK Jr's outfit, and probably is related to why they can't seem to set a good point down for Donkey Kong and Cranky Kong's relations over the years.
To be fair, SuperBot tried as hard as they were allowed to make PSASBR a good game, and I can't even in good conscience call it a knock-off either because it's not the first platform fighter since Smash became a thing or even the first crossover-based one either - hell, Smash itself isn't even the first platform fighter as it is. The PSASBR team outright stated they were fans of Super Smash Bros. itself and that they weren't so much trying to rip it off as just make an equivalent for PlayStation properties; you could argue that constitutes a knock-off, but while I've got little love for PlayStation in recent years as it is, I wouldn't necessarily agree. Hell, the very name of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is a direct homage to SSB64's original Japanese name - Nintendo All-Star Dairanto Smash Bros., the word Dairanto meaning battle royale.
Plus they put a lot of love and little touches into the game that tells me their hearts were in the right place and had a genuine fondness for the source material they were working with. From the original Polygon Man mascot for the PS1 being the final boss with all the old quotes from the PS1 ad campaign as his boss banter, to oft-ignored properties like Ape Escape (seriously Sony, it's been twelve years, where the hell is AE4) being included, to even some good ideas that Smash itself hasn't done. Like Smash, all the stages in PSASBR aside from its Final Destination equivalent is pulled from the represented franchises, but in PSASBR the stages are all mashups of at least two franchises at once - usually a primary franchise's universe being encroached upon by elements from the secondary one(s). It made it really feel like a "worlds collide" setting not seen in Smash since SSE - hell, its story mode even has the same "eldritch god-like being (Tabuu/Polygon Man) pulling fragments of other series' worlds into his own ethereal domain" concept. The whole rivals thing where each character has someone on the roster they're guaranteed to fight in a specific fight is a pretty fun touch as well, as is the whole KO mechanic. Fighting to knock power-ups from your opponents rather than to drain their health or build up damage is pretty much coin battle in Smash, but those coins fill up your super meter which is how you make KOs. It's an interesting concept.
A lot of what made PSASBR falter is Sony execs sticking their hands too far into it and controversial requests from IP holders, such as the whole splitting of Good Cole and Evil Cole into separate characters rather than making using the Karmic Shifts as a Zelda/Sheik type deal, or Capcom demanding that DmC Dante be used as promotion for the game rather than the more popular classic Dante. A lot of other character choices - Fat Princess, Big Daddy, Isaac, Killzone soldier, arguably Sackboy - weren't exactly characters anyone was even asking for either, and it wasn't even in a fun out-of-left-field way like Wii Fit Trainer, it was just "Really? All these utter nobodies instead of someone like Crash or Spyro?"
As aside, I'd like to apologize for the other day. I'd hoped my retort would be taken in a jocular manner and try to defuse the tension, but I knew I was skirting the line and it indeed ended up being seen in the opposite way I'd intended. So, sorry.
I agree with your post but just a detail, LittleBigPlanet was a killer app for PS3, Sackboy absolutely deserved to be in there.
I know a lot of people who saw the PS3 as a No-Games Station until LBP came out. A lot of hardcore games came out in 2008 too but LBP is what eased Nintendo fans into getting a PS3.
LBP would the only modern "Playstation" game I would be able to name at the time. Then again, I also thought Mirror's Edge was a PS3 exclusive for the longest time.
Still waiting for Final Fantasy remixes
It is a crime to not even has the chocobo theme.
Hell, I'd argue that Sackboy was pretty much Playstation's mascot during the PS3 era.
But yeah, to me PSASBR's third-party representation in particular felt like a vehicle for advertising rather than celebrating the franchises represented, if you catch my drift.
