TF2 General Chat and Speculation Station V9 - Sad Heavy Hours? Who Up?

I just like the aethetic of the TF2 Screamfortress maps.
It's not trying to take itself too seriously and embraces all the spooky memes.
I've always loved Scream Fortress just because it's so classic Halloween. Orange and black streamers, jack-o-lanterns, bedsheet ghosts, skeletons and witches and black cats and whatnot.
There's no "we've gotta maintain our themeing so here's like a pumpkin hat and something to do with zombies" that you see with a lot of other games, TF2 goes all-in on making it look like a grade-school Halloween party brought to life and it ends up meshing really really well with that late-50's Americana aesthetic they're going for. Like, Harvest specifically reminds me of the scene in It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown when they go to the party at the barn and everyone's bobbing for apples, you know?
The themeing for Scream Fortress is so good that it's honestly one of the first things I think of when I think Halloween, right up there alongside stuff like Rocky Horror, Over the Garden Wall, and Trick'R'Treat. Just listen to this and tell me you don't start getting nostalgic for that late-autumn chill in the air:

Ah yes, dumb-lord fluury strikes again. Goes back into 2014? Alright, let me break this down barney style for you:
After about 2014 or so it became apparent that the old valve who worked on things like the Uber or War! Updates were no longer at the wheel behind TF2- as reflected by the quantity and quality of our updates becoming gradually shittier and less frequent, culminating in MyM as the poster child for a valve who no longer understands/plays or has the manpower to produce quality updates for this game.
They even fucked up JI gameplay wise (despite being aesthetically beautiful) after the longest dev time in history, leaving pyro as a base class nearly unchanged and still a poor competitive class choice, and several large balance change omissions that even a casual player struggles to understand (the diamondback, random crits, etc.)
That there’s the facts of what happened, no matter how much hope or faith you have in valve.
As for Halloween? Halloween and smissmass are basically the only two times in the year where something can be reliably predicted to happen.
And every year, we all get it Gaben altars our, and pray that within the seasonal cosmetic fluff we almost assuredly get, that there would be some long-overdue balance changes to the actual gameplay.
It’s like a fucking lottery with valve at this point:
”Is X update going to have anything that affects the actual game? Or will it be more cosmetic fluff/event rehashes! Place your bets!”
Thats why people make a big shit about one of the only two almost-assured updates in tf2. Because the player base has been reduced to hoping, praying that valve does the bare fucking minimum in thier responsibility as this game’s developer.
I serverely hope valve (read: the broader company and not the beleaguered tf team who’s doing what they can under valve’s shitty corporate structure) reads the boards. Because they should be ashamed of what’s gone on here.
Just had my first ever update dream. Don't remember much, except it was Middle-Eastern/Arabian nights themed and had a red-gold color scheme.
In the dream, I just got up in the morning to find out the update dropped only a few minutes after I went to bed. Just as I started downloading it after reading the update page (it was pretty Heavy-focused from what I can remember), I woke up.
No matter how bad Valve blows updates (unless the game is literally unplayable for months) or how much people complain Valve won't change because of their structure.
Speaking of dream updates, I had one a while back that we got a Vaporwave/80's themed update which had a brand new campaign, a quite lengthy video explaining everything about it, four community cosmetic cases, and to top it all off, the final campaign mission was a boss fight against a giant robot.
I distinctly remember hating the update in my dream.
SF used to be some of the funnest updates of the year, and had a lot to look forward to.
New versions of maps complete with gameplay improvements (like the extra drop spawns on helltower), bosses/mechanics like the spell books, Comics which would expand on the lore, or just have a good laugh, lots of fun cosmetics
It was all around just a very fun atmosphere, even if it only lasted for a few weeks, it imo was one of the defining events during the older days of TF2, and was always fun to look forward to.
Now though? It's a shadow of the shadow of it's former self.
it's always really weird running into people that i see post on here/the emporium (love ya guys!)
just ran into a emporium regular on a ctf server in casual.
I regularly ran into people who knew me from this thread back when I had a Competitive Mode binge, it's a nice experience even if the matches would then be closed off because someone disconnected.
I'm wondering, what do you consider "baked"? If it's related to the video above your post, then Newton's third law of motion could very well apply:
When one body exerts a force on a second body, the second body simultaneously exerts a force equal in magnitude and opposite in direction on the first body.
I assume that if you airblast someone downwards and you're directly above them, then naturally the force would then propulse the airblasting player upwards, as the airblasted player cannot go below the ground, of course. Source's physics actually obey this decently well, even if TF2 itself has not a lot of physics elements to speak of.
Don't be so aggressive and hostile.
I feel like you are looking at the past with a bunch of rose-tinted glasses, ignoring that several other updates back then were also god-awful at start. You have a fair argument with quantity, but don't act like the old updates were the ~golden age~ where every update was great and mannconomy totally didnt make the game unplayable for a bunch of people because of massive crashes.
Random-crits aren't exactly a "duh" topic either, even though I am in the boat of people that obviously want 'em removed, don't act like its an easy decision given just how 50/50 the community is on it.
And well, from what I have read on various social media - you aren't exactly correct. This might be true for people like us which are grasping on straws, but the rest just seems to look forward to scream fortress, expecting a new mode which I honestly think won't happen anymore. Especially because Scream Fortress doesn't include balancing in the first place.
I understand the frustration and Ill happily join you in if we get jack shit till mid-sep but Scream Fortress has enough going for it - not like anything can top Helltower either way. Most charm, best gameplay element.
Does shooting a rocket or grenade on the top of a player cause them to bounce up in the way 10 meters? No. It craters them. Exactly like the old airblast groundstall, when you think about it.
the "good" physics is the force that all damage based weaponry obey. If you ask somebody to stand still, even pistol shots will push them back a bit. I believe the sentryguns use this "hurt force" but at a greater scale - this is how sentries still feel fair despite having a pushing ability. This is familiar from as far as the old doom games.
anything ranging from fan, shortstop shove, airblast, scorch shot, jetpack landing and loose cannon force the victim to take a preset amount of push because it relies on factors other than pure dmg. Heavy and mantreads are excellent ways to tell what's baked or not, because they're the only things that have pure dmg push resistance. And for some reason baked pushes are always so potent that they constantly cancel out player air control, making them feel bullshit unlike pure dmg. yes even despite the supposed updates that pretend to have fixed this.
Maybe they just cannot program knockback that doesn't do damage to function the same way as damaging knockback? Baked knockback has been in the game since 2008.
very likely that it just cannot be replicated easily, fair point. Shouldn't ever have been a thing then - airblast's fine with just reflects and the other guns are all detested.
Got my RED Dispenser in the mail today. My collection is complete.
because they have no clue how things work or are currently
Was this on the Steam Comment Sections or where?
I think I understand your point much better now. Yeah, I sort of overlook how "fake" applied knockback feels on first glance, as it seemingly ignores passive knockback resistance and therefore makes it useless, and like on the video you posted, it makes a Giant's passive push resistance a joke. The reason I talked about physics that time is because Pyro's airblast applies "velocity" on the target, so having the target abide by physics didn't seem too out of place.
However, much like FindTheBorealis pointed out, it's very difficult to apply "real" knockback without dealing damage, so on those cases, something has to apply it. I think a good step in the right direction would be making all forced knockback-applying items actually obey knockback resistance rules better by being more drastic and proportional to how hitscan pushback does it. That shouldn't be too hard to implement but the FaN has been around for quite some time now and nobody has seemed to notice it doesn't quite care about knockback resistance, so I'm not holding my breath but I think it's still worth emailing the TF2 Team over.
If Valve still insists on putting community items in crates so they get the higher percentage of key sales they should at least put the items on the Mann Co store 6 months to a year after the crate comes out so that they and the community creators can get some extra revenue on the items.
Jesus Christ, you know the enemy team's sick of your shit when you're playing scout if they bring out 3 natasha heavies.
I really need a heavies killed part for my Soda Popper.
oh trust me dude, i've got my own

i don't use it much & don't have a scouts killed counter on it mainly because it's reserved for real pieces of shit basically, scunts who feel the need to lennybind/schadenfreude after every kill
we posting Natashas?

Give them a cut of the market sales.
Things like the top tiers are there purely just to make money, contributors don't see a dime of hats being sold for $30 average.
With all the controversy surrounding it, and all the people rallying to get it removed, I'd be surprised if Valve doesn't do anything about it in the next few updates or so.
Being killed three times in a row by random crits is the direct opposite of fun.
Happy 10th birthday to the Heavy Update, which not only brought us the best gamemode, but two of the best weapons as well.
is it opposite day? arena is suddenly the best gamemode and being bitter about scouts suddenly makes slow ok
Is there something wrong with liking quick battles?
arena is the exact opposite of a quick battle
Not in my experience. Rounds last only a couple minutes at most.
I still wish the TF2 team had come up with KotH for the heavy update and never came up with arena so maps like Ravine and Lumbermill would have been designed for KotH and not arena.
