I expect incredibly minor mentions for smash - maybe, if we are incredibly lucky, a new character
I don't see why a character reveal would be out of the question. I mean they've done it before in general directs.
A Spirits Mode reveal would probably be likely.
Ehh... I understand his reasoning about the music matching the action, but at the same time with how Smash is also meant to be a digital museum of Nintendo history, I think it's good to have a wide variety in music.

I'm going to use my switch to listen to smash's music quite often, i'm not gooing to lie.
Also going back to the question about "which figther you wouldn't expect to see in smash out of the polls?" I'm not going to lie. I was totally expecting and looking foward to see someone like Mach Rider as a figther until Duck Hunt came along.
All they really have to show is what the name of the mode is and the gist of it. Could easily just be like a 5 minute thing at the end.
They can still tease it, like instead of a new fighter, they can just tease a Story mode instead.
That seems like a massive blueball to me. Story mode is VERY important to a lot of people, and koizumi turning into a ghost and saying "haha this is what the new smash mode is! but more later " seems.... anticlamactic?
What can they REALLY reveal about the story mode besides the name of it and the basic gameplay?
They probably want to save all the important stuff for launch. 5 minutes is all they need to reveal it.
Could be a good time to reveal the new Pokemon character we all know is coming. It's not something that's a huge hype inducing character so would make more sense than having it as the opener/closer of the next Smash direct.
It's good to note that they want everything revealed for smash before launch: I doubt that means they'll wait until the day before or something, but also think that doesn't mean it'll be revealed now
No, I expect a October smash direct that'll go into the story mode. Why? Because what's more fitting a month for Spirits?
I can see "Spirits" Mode to be the very last thing to be revealed, like a month before release. Maybe closer.
Seeing how the game may actually release simultaneously worldwide, the fear of spoilers if Spirits is a kind of Sub-Space StoryMode or similar will be diminished by a lot.
Aside from the slight blunder from last Smash Direct, I don't think Sakurai wants anything surprises to be spoiled.
In all honesty, I don't want a demo to be released due to dataminers. With how fucking rabid they were on that reddit post, constantly asking for a copy, I'd rather not just have any demo at all. Fuck 'em.
Unless it's the most fullproof demo they ever make. Which I doubt can happen.

All I really care is that the game offers more single player modes and a better singleplayer mode than Smash 4 did on WiiU. Online VS only go so far, and the alst classic mode wasn't that great, an dlet snot even talk about the board game. Please have a proper smash run or interspace this time.
Very, very unlikely but they might announce a Test Smash in the direct so they can sucker people on paying up for the Nintendo Online early on. Unlikely in the fact that people will data mine the fuck out of it.
Not gonna lie, I would probably be enough of a sucker to buy online if it meant access to a Test Smash.
Just some gameplay aspects, like you know, a variety of bosses? Tease the story potentially? etc. - its a big deal

no franchise in the series has had a boss battle without a representing fighter. There's little sense in having a monster hunter boss fight in what is clearly a story mode battle if there's not also an accompanying fighter to take them down. The boss fight was a teaser for the character to come.
There's also the fact that Monster Hunter has a rich history on nintendo consoles with a handful of very well-performing titles on both switch and Wii U, with generations ultimate coming to switch in november. A monster hunter reveal for smash at this point helps generate hype for MHGU.
There's also the FACT that monster hunter world is the best selling capcom title of all time. It makes enough sense that they'd be eager to represent the franchise in smash what with their clearly strong relationship with nintendo. Though this applies less considering how recent MHW is and how her inclusion would have been planned far before MHW's release.
It's very probable that the rathalos reveal was pushed before the fighter because of MHGU's release at the end of august. They could have put off the fighter reveal for a number of reasons such as the trailer not being prepared, or perhaps there being something related to monster hunter in the coming direct that would tie in with the fighter. Ultimately that's not for us to know
Even if the character isn't in the base roster I'm beyond confident that they'll be presented as a DLC fighter. The brand is just too beloved and the character too successful on nintendo systems for nintendo OR CAPCOM to pass up.
