It makes more sense when taken with Gematsu since it's pretty damn clear that his list of characters were the initial plans. Sakurai hinted that Chrom was originally gonna be playable (and eventually did become playable) and Chrom was on the list, "Character from X/Y" being the wording Sakurai used for how they were adding a Pokemon rep and being written as such on the list, Lucina missing from the character list because she was an extra later in development, the rest of the characters being dead on (including Wii Fit Trainer), etc. I seriously doubt they just decided "hey let's write down one character who we wont make, that'll show those pesky leakers" and then also cut a Rhythm Heaven stage just cause. As for no pattern, the emblem still adds more to the idea that they were going to do something with Rhythm Heaven, and it seems more likely to be a character and maybe a stage. Yeah no shit Brain Age and Electroplankton aren't getting reps, they have no characters worth adding. For the trio part they could easily just stick close together and act like a trail, I doubt that'll be as noisy as you'd think it'd be. The Rhythm Heaven series has had tons of minigames that revolve around trios and I'd rather have that than Karate Joe (We already got a more famous dude in a karate getup) and the Wrestler. If it had to be a single character I'd rather it be Marshall or the Tap Trial Girl.
I just think it's a bit silly that people take Gematsu so seriously yet have extreme doubts about Vergeben. Reminder that Gematsu was a full site owned by one dude regarding leaks for various games and wasn't just a random user on GameFAQs and it just happened to blow over to there. He also said Shulk would be revealed on the day Robin did which also dis-confirmed Chrom's inclusion. They both got plenty wrong, yet one is treated like gospel while getting things wrong and being more incorrect as time progressed as they revealed new information (which people conveniently leave out) and the other has multiple games worth of information being accurate yet is treated like a heretic because some of his sources were wrong. I can understand doubting DasVergeben and he might not actually be right on his character choices (I hope he is, however, at least to a degree), but Gematsu was not actually better. He even had said at one point months after the first one with the Chorus Men that they still weren't sure if they were going to cut Ness or not in favor of Lucas, which everyone realized was BS because that's way too late into development for such thoughts. This either suggests that Gematsu's source only was part of the dev team for a very short period of time early on, left, and started spouting crap based on their experiences months beforehand or they figured out who was leaking and gave out bad information on purpose to root them out.
does the amiibo thing mean the most optimal tournament setup is to just slam 70 amiibos on the console
Definitely, unless the game does have a story mode and it'll work similar to Subspace Emissary where you can unlock everyone in a couple of hours. This also means those amiiqo thing that poofs any amiibo can get you every fighter from the start, once poeple data mine the newcomers/returning vets amiibo tags from the game.
What if I use my Isabelle amiibo will that add her into the game?
Great, I can use my amiibos to unlock Link and Samus when the game comes out! That'll save me some time.

The actual post was removed, what'd it say?
I still think getting the amiibo for a DLC character in 4 should have granted you said character. I will unlock things the proper way, unless Mewtwo goes back to needing 20 hours.
It was ridiculous, something about you line up for the demo for Ultimate, you had to bend to your knees and hands on the floor and Sakurai piss on you and you had to drink 99% to get a chance to play the demo. Consolation prize was a copy of Brawl. ... I wished I screenshot it now just how ridiculous it was.
The optimal tournament setup is someone bringing their 100% completed switch to slap in a dock, I reckon
Just like it worked with WiiU, there will be pre-assigned "tourney consoles" that each major organizer takes from event to event It'll be easier to do with the Switch since you're only carrying around a dozen tablets instead of a dozen small consoles AND a dozen gamepads
https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/9ad4it/at_big_events_with_ultimate_being_playable_how/e4umchh/ He copied pasta'd it elsewhere. Future tip, if someone is deleted on Reddit, change the link to "ceddit" and look at the user's profile.
Well if the amiibo thing hold water, I can see three way (four way if we have story mode) to unlock characters in Ultimate: Play a certain set of Smash games. (ex. play 30 Smash games to unlock Zelda) Complete certain task (ex. beat Classic Mode in any difficulty as Lucina to unlock Chrom) Tap the corresponding amiibo to unlock said fighter. (ex. tap Cloud amiibo to unlock Cloud) Play Story Mode to unlock fighters as you proceed. (If we have Story Mode)
The way they said that unlocking characters is streamlined has me believed it will be prety fast to unlock all the characters anyway. Could probably do it all in one night if you wanted.
Since fighters are streamlined and Stages are all unlocked from the start, I'm guessing Achievements will only give trophies and songs.
Sakurai on Smash Bros. Ultimate The number of fighters that you can use from the beginning will be limited to those you could play as in the Nintendo 64 game. That way, the player can enjoy unlocking the characters one-by-one like in a typical fighting game; unlocking them all is a fair challenge, and some might be a little difficult, but most can be unlocked without any major difficulty.
Honestly, with the size of Ultimate's cast, they could pull a CHALLENGER APPROACHING after literally every match, and it'd still take 60+ matches to get everyone
I've had a thought in my head that there's enough stages to go around and they are all unlocked from the start, along with seeing or hearing some statement that they streamlined the unlock method, that if you play one game on a stage you unlock that character. The problems arise with things like Richter, where only one stage for series with multiple characters.
Hidden Super Unlock: Leave the game on all night, unlock everyone but Mewtwo.
SD 50 times and change your online taunt text to "It's not a phase" to unlock Cloud
Play Wii Fit for one month to unlock Wii Fit Trainer
Real talk though, think Nintendo will do any sort of super secret hidden character with an insane unlock criteria like mewtwo?
I think in the last Direct Sakurai said they would reveal every character prior to release.
It sort of ruins the air of mystery, wasn't Duck Hunt a hidden character in Smash 4? I know every smash since Melee has had some hidden retro rep (Game and Watch, ROB, Duck Hunt), it would be weird for them to not follow that tradition
Duck Hunt was the last revealed character I believe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1zrj4n7qio
That trailer came out a month after the game's release
Oh okay, then I guess he was a secret character then.
I am STILL reeling from the fact they even added Duck Hunt as a character Duck Hunt was the first video game I ever played, when I was like four years old. It's always held a special place to me, seeing that first leak get confirmed made me so happy
I think there's at the very least going to be a retro rep revealed close to release. I just wonder who it would be.
