But Smash 3DS got a good amount of use in college and hopefully I'll be back in school when Smash is still hype and relevant so I could play it with peeps. Mobile Smash is really great tbh.
I'll tell you why. Because Nintendo isn't incompetent at all.
This isn't sarcasm, they know what they can bend and break and still have people latched on.
They're probably the best in the business at this, to be honest. It was delayed to get people hooked. Let a few Multiplayer centric games get their footholds, let ARMS, Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8,
etc., come out.
Then deliver the final blow, Smash Ultimate coming out soon, with extensive multiplayer online.
At this point you've got fans invested in Splatoon 2, kids addicted to MK8 online, and now you've got the hook, line, and sinker, with Smash, a game that casuals and die hard competitive alike will shell
almost anything just to be able to play with friends long-distance.
They delayed it because it was the smart thing to do, on their end. And it really was.
If they launched it a year ago, with the same business model, I guarantee you the subscription rate would be fucking pitiful, nothing but backlash.
But now they know that they can safely launch it, and just turn a blind eye to the complaints because people are gonna gobble it up anyways since Smash is coming.
They are out of touch in the sense that I bet they still expected raving applause from rabid fans just because online means they can play Smash and get cloud backups (which are conveniently
not elaborated upon in the announcement video), so I can call them on a full on fault there.
And the reason they likely didn't elaborate on the super exciting extra fun prizes and gifts you get from the service, isn't because they don't know what to do with it, it's because they know exactly what
they're doing with it and they know it sucks complete ass. They've known since the downfall of Club Nintendo.
My bet is they likely thought rabid applause would follow the trailer, and they didn't wanna pour salt on it by announcing a shitty prize service, but instead just averted pouring salt on an already
completely fucking rancid meal.
I think a pretty big part in Nintendo's incompetence with this whole matter is that the only audience that seems to matter to them seem to have no problems with it.
Almost everything I've seen from the Japanese side is them praising for it, with most of the complaints being not having the money to get it right away.
You can have a functioning, modern online service or you can trade it all in for what's in this box
Are you guys mental or just never had friends you wanted to play against online? That has been the entirety of Smash for me (Smash 4 atleast)
You can't compare these things to an online mode. It's a bloody PvP game. Of course Online is one of it's biggest parts, even if faulty.
In my case I don't have anyone local I can play with so it's not really much of a choice whether or not I get the online because eventually I'm gonna want to play with a friend and giving Nintendo their ransom is the only way to do that since they live all over the country.
you might aswell say that ultimate costs, 80€, not 60€.
I just hope we can finally play coop online against others. Smash 4 only allowed local coop against other players online. Inviting somebody to play with them 2vs2 against randoms wasn't possible.
i love nintendo's game designers and creators. their business side? ruthlessly lame. not as bad as it could be, but still with a lot of major problems. shitty situation overall
I've been playing XB2 - Torna The Golden Country and man I love this so much more than the base game it's not funny. Really excited to see what Mono does next after this.
im just baffled how nintendo can be perfect at game design and the absolute worst at online
Game designers don't hold corporate business meetings or program netcode.
No because 90% of my friends don't own Nintendo consoles and the other 10% aren't as deep into Smash as I am so they don't want to play online often. I enjoy Smash as I have ever since Melee, by playing through the solo modes and setting up fun battles against AI. In hindsight I shouldn't have called Smash's online worthless for everyone, but in my experience of playing against randos who have 800 ping, Smash's online simply isn't worth my money.
I'm aware of that, it's just that I have never seen such a coincidentally stark contrast in quality between the two in other companies. Usually its bad-bad or good-good
Meanwhile here its amazing-god awful
it's so confusing. after all the disappointment with the wii u, nintendo now seem determined to give the switch, one of their most successful consoles of the 2000's since the wii, the same fate by giving it the worst online service possible. i think the even more confusing thing for me is i see people honestly defending this and it's like... how? the price point is literally the only positive thing about the service. are these people just unaware of what you get with XBL and PS+ or are they just desparate to play online?
either way, i'm not getting the online. i don't really play my switch overall that much, nevermind online games.
As somebody who's worked in a Game Store, yes most people don't know/care about the extra features of PSN/XBL. All they want is to just play their game online.
Sometimes the free game sweetens the deal, but they just come in to begrudgingly pay $60 so they can play CoD/whatever until their sub expires, and they have to come right back.
Literally everything about the Luigi's Mansion info on the stream just makes me want the game on the Switch even more instead.
But you just know that if Microsoft and Sony provided a service like this and forced everything to an app people would be demanding executives' heads. Nintendo seems to be getting a lot of "I don't like this but I will still pay" responses. It's just an annoying double standard that's all.
The app is inexcusable considering the fucking system ACTUALLY SUPPORTS ALL THESE FEATURES BUILT IN.
The app is really what bothers me more than anything. Like I honestly feel like I'm being Punk'd still or something. Are they seriously this dense and behind-the-times?
my favorite part was when they advertised multiple people speaking into your phone's microphone as a feature
"hey, uh, boss? we forgot to add noise cancellation to the apps voicechat"
"... make it a feature."
Devils advocate and probably dumb opinion, but I’m not too mad with how Nintendo’s current service is. There’s nothing too spectacular, but I like the NES games. It could do more but I’ll still probably going to pick it up.
heres hoping the deals are good and not just “1 dollar off breath of the wild”
Ehh I’m not buying. I could give two fucks about playing smash online. I like to play Smash competitively but I just don’t think it’s a fun game without people sitting next to you.
I think most people wouldn’t of minded this service if they didn’t tie the online to it. Like, if they just kept to the free NES games, cloud saves and the exclusive deals, that would’ve been fine. Certainly not great, but not terrible either. Hell, if they rebranded this service as a “Nintendo Classics service” or something, and added SNES, N64 & and possibly even Gamecube titles to it as well, that would’ve been great!
But the fact that they’re tieing the same P2P Online as before to it just brings this down from Okay to just Shit.
Not to be a pain but that's kind of a "if it was completely different it'd be great" view
nintendo has us by the fucking balls
if they do a smash demo it'll likely be an online only thing so we'll have to pay for the shitty online service
