No because while it was a monument to gaming, Mario 64 hasn't aged that well imo. I'd rather them just keeping it accessible in modern times (aka more than just NES games Nintendo)
I'd argue that Mario 64 has aged incredibly well and still remains one of the best examples on how to do a 3D platformer. Hell Nintendo managed to get the camera (mostly) right when it took over developers years to figure that part out alone.
What has supposedly not aged well about Mario 64? The level design? The physics? I still have more fun with both of those than most of Odyssey, particularly the movement physics. Mario 64 is floatier and looser, but the momentum of it is way more fun to play with than the overly tight and controlled movement of Odyssey.
Yeah I always thought it was the first reason myself. I have a feeling it has something to do with Miyamoto, since he doesn’t like the idea of having loads of characters and story in Mario games. Not wanting to break the “classic story” sounds like something he would say
Some of the level design is pretty bad. Tick tock clock and rainbow ride being good examples. You have to take the same path up every time and one slip up means you have to do it all again. the movement physics are really tight though
its not like odyssey is without its segments that are a complete drag

Rainbow Ride I won't defend but I think Tick Tock Clock is a great level. It's a unique premise and while sure if you fuck up too bad you have to start over it's one of the last levels in the game so of course it's gonna be tough.
The first half dozen levels are great, the rest are a mixed bag. Tall Tall Mountain has a super repetitive linear design, Tiny Huge Island has a novel concept but suffers from Mario's physics overreacting to stage geometry when he's huge leading to sudden deaths, Dire Dire Docks is literally filler, Snowman's Land feels a bit redundant when put alongside Cool Cool Mountain and has somewhat uninteresting missions compared to CCM... Even Jolly Roger Bay has too many "swim for two minutes and then solve a basic puzzle" missions, making it tedious to play in a stretch. I'll give them a lot of credit though, for being their very first attempt at fully 3D level design, they get much more right than they get wrong, but I'm still not blind to the flaws.

I wish Mario Maker had an AI playtester. Something that can tell if a level is too boring or too stressful.
Reminds me of the game The Magic Circle, where you wound up having to build a game level where a character would play it live and give reactions as he did. He even had a boredom meter

This should've been M&L4 instead of Dream Team. From what I heard from a lot of people, Dream Team was pretty much just BIS 2. Not necessarily bad, but that it felt unnecessary. While we're on "if only" scenarios with the Mario RPGs, I'd have rather Paper Jam be a more cohesive fusion of the two RPG series instead of a literal crossover. Called something like "Paper Mario & Luigi" and have them put that on Wii U instead of Color Splash. Regardless of how good PMCS ended up being, it was always going to suffer under the stigma left over by Sticker Star.

I don't even own a Xenoblade game but I'm happy to see it did well. Another strong brand for Nintendo is always good.
The problem with Sticker Mario is that the gameplay is inherently not fun- the collection of cards for your attacks is not a fun mechanic and the battle system suffered for it. It doesn't matter how many good pieces of writing PMCS had, the gameplay sounded horrible and I wasn't gonna touch it with a 10 foot pole. I'm fine if they make another nontraditional paper Mario game, but I just want it to be good
Paper Mario is really defined by its story, honestly. Super Paper Mario had pretty mediocre gameplay overall but its story is one of my favourites, whereas I can't remember a thing about Sticker Star besides the sacrifice at the end, because goodbyes and sad music manipulate me super easily. Bowser never even spoke, for god's sake. I never played Colour Splash so I can't really speak on that game's merits, but from what I saw Bowser was the villain again, which is pretty boring. Does he talk in that game?
By the way, didn't that Dragalia Lost thing launch a couple days ago?
It's fucking Miyamoto. I'm almost certain of it. I mean, we have direct evidence of him interfering with at least one Mario sub-series (RIP Paper Mario). It's clear he has very narrow ideas of what Mario is supposed to be, and since he has so much more control in recent years than he did during the GC-Wii era, he is able to enforce conformity across the entire franchise.
The optimal 3D platformer camera is one that lets me control it and disable all automatic camera adjustments from the game.

Are you talking about the whole "no new characters thing" that people always bring up. Wasn't that a misunderstanding and what he really meant was that new characters need to "serve a purpose" and not just be throwaway npcs?
Even if that's the true intention of that phrase, it's still fucking stupid. Every new Mario game debuts at least a dozen or two brands new enemys, some of which are never seen again. Why should npcs be any different? Oh, and also don't forget that he has a bullshit double standard for the spin-offs compared to the main-line games: look how many original NPCs were introduced in Mario Odyssey alone. If that game had been made according to the standards put forth for the Paper Mario series as of late, we'd just have Bowser, Peach, maybe the Broodlings and Pauline, and everyone else would be Toads or generic enemies.

This is true, IS just took it way the wrong way. Though he did also say he didn't want Paper Mario 4 to just be "another TTYD" either.
