And I don't blame him, TTYD sold like shit to my own chagrin. But I can't help but feel his meddling led to Sticker Star being so bleh, even if unintentionally. All I want is for them to put TTYD out again, if that sells enough maybe they'll make a more traditional game again
It sold over 2 million, just shy of Sticker Star and more than the first game. Super Paper Mario was the best-selling Paper Mario.
Yet Super Paper Mario has what I would consider tied for the most compelling story in the series alongside TTYD. It's actually better written in a lot of areas, with a villain who you learn by the end is genuinely quite tragic, and more than a few fun twists along the way. Super Paper Mario selling well should absolutely NOT have given the impression that dynamic characters aren't important. If anything it should've told the opposite story, that even if they only exist in one game, people want to get invested in your cast.
Yeah I don't really get the hate for Super Paper Mario, it's my second favorite after TTYD, and if it had TTYD's gameplay it would've probably been my most favorite. The gameplay for what it is isn't even as bad as some people say, they managed to make the locations still feel very Paper Mario like even in a platformer context (Like Merlee's mansion), and the River Twygz part is mindblowing just for all the classic tartarus/hell references.
May I remind you it's also the only Mario game where one of the villains literally murders all of the playable characters Like what the fuck
man seeing all this makes me miss Paper Mario. Colour Splash was nice - the humour and the art style were fantastic, even - but the actual combat and story in it didn't really exist to begin with. with how nintendo have been handling the Switch and its games, it makes me hopeful that Paper Mario will get a return to form, or at least just a good story.
For whatever reason someone once told me numbers saying Sticker Star sold a super huge amount, guess they were wrong, apologies
Well, if anything, they'll probably have to make a new menu system considering both Sticker Star and Color Splash relied on the bottom screen to manage your stickers/cards. So i hope they'll bring back more traditional RPG elements
I had a dream once a while back that they made a new traditional Paper Mario game where the initial antagonist is Bowser Jr as Shadow Mario, but after an even bigger baddie steals the Gadd tech he stole and kidnaps Peach AND Bowser, he actually winds up one of your partners for the rest of the game. Other partners I can recall were a Whomp wearing boxing gloves and headgear with like 50HP (mostly a defensive / utility partner to stand in front of Mario using the turn order switch), a biker/punk looking Bully, a Lakitu news reporter (yes, the same one from 64), and an artistic Magikoopa. The Whomp could use himself as a bridge for Mario to cross small gaps or smash onto heavy buttons, the Bully could bowl through weak walls and knock things off ledges, the Lakitu could see hidden items and give hints on the room ala Goombario/Goombella, the Magikoopa could create and remove blocks in certain spots and change the color of things (he can change what buttons do what in a complex puzzle), and Bowser Jr himself starts with just fire breath, but gets more abilities later like a mini clown car (ala Lakilester) and a ground pound (replacing the super boots). ... Yes I tend to have very detailed little sparks of imagination.

I can't think of a single argument as to why all the NPCs in the later Paper Mario games had to be Toads. Like legit, what's the point of not making them memorable? What, you can't possibly find the time to design new and interesting things that could fit in the Mario universe?
Miyamoto spooked them when he said "Make meaningful characters/species" and they decided it would be easier to just have nothing but toad. It honestly isn't worth thinking about because it doesn't go deeper than that.
I enjoyed the first two Paper Mario games because it gave a story and context to the Mario universe. From what I've seen, they're all the same model, too. TTYD and the original showed all sorts of toads, all with differing cultures. The newer games just feel lazy.
Congrats. Your fucking subconscious dreamed up a better Paper Mario game than the last two official titles.
One of the houses I've been working on in ACNL https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/146362/2a506486-cd15-4708-8839-d920f4086cff/HNI_0083.JPG https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/146362/c9b01051-1be0-486d-b491-a4fd70bae23c/HNI_0084.JPG https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/146362/ac2aef86-6d0d-4385-b626-6f269da96e6a/HNI_0082.JPG https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/146362/8a7a4833-7b77-4d35-ba8e-e5a7e5b15f0a/HNI_0085.JPG https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/146362/2b69a332-70d5-4c0e-9a9f-8e0d27c303b9/HNI_0086.JPG https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/146362/85023a73-3a24-45f0-baec-95670d7f9341/HNI_0087.JPG https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/146362/27cc27a0-cbd2-4630-b20c-3fbe12a44034/HNI_0088.JPG
VERY nice custom textures were a mistake
All this Paper Mario talk makes me wish we could get a simple port of Super Paper Mario on Switch, since I'd normally emulate most Wii games but it's a pain in the ass to try to get it to work with a traditional controller.
To activate the pointer in handheld mode, slide the right joycon out (continuing to hold the rest with your left hand), and use the right joycon's gyro to aim the pointer. Slide the joycon back into the system to exit pointing mode. If both joycons are detached from the system for any reason (tabletop / TV play), the game goes back to Wii style controls; hold one joycon sideways like an NES controller, turn it to point at the screen to enter pointing mode with the gyro, turn it back to exit.
IIRC Miyamoto only said he wanted characters from SMW. Which is odd, Paper Mario for the most part barely uses any new characters, it's just the bosses and the flowers.
Yeah what they do in some Dolphin setups is just make it so that pressing in an analog stick lets you control the cursor onscreen via stick, which would be a pretty trivial way to implement it in a port since traditional controllers have quite a few free buttons. it'd also be a lot easier to do in a port than in emulation since they (theoretically) have access to the original code.
I want a port of games like Pandora's Tower, you can just flat out use the classic controller in that game so there's no excuse.
I just think using the touchscreen for pointing would work well in SPM, mostly because you never need to both point at the screen and move at the same time, you're always doing either one or the other. Let go of the controls and touch to enter pointing mode, press any button to exit, nice and seamless.

There are already Switch games that implement Wii-style pointers: https://twitter.com/NintenDaan/status/842226564775481344?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E842226564775481344&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.polygon.com%2F2017%2F3%2F16%2F14947750%2Fnintendo-switch-world-of-goo-controls-wii
You can get that on the Wii U with gamepad support. It’s not quite the same as the switch, but it’s a decent currently available fix. 480p Wii games look solid on the gamepad
I'm honestly just waiting for sega to announce JSRF for switch. That's worth more to me than Smash or any other big upcoming nintendo title. but I don't trust them enough to actually do it, we've had JSR on PC for years and it seems like Sega is so out of touch that they've forgotten that there's even a second JSR game. I'm wholly expecting them to only port the original out of sheer ignorance. It doesn't help that the original game is nowhere near as fun as its sequel. Hope for the best, expect the worst, That's what I've learned with sega. but I really really hope this sega ages thing could be a turning point for that.
isn't jet set radio future in a legal quagmire or something? i recall seeing something around the time MS announced the og xbox compatibility for xbone that music rights issues would prevent JSRF from making that it on that, and considering music rights issues have caused problems with atleast two other of sega's games (sonic 3 and crazy taxi) i'd believe it.
There's a number of songs make specifically for JSRF by Hideki Naganuma that Sega owns the rights to. I love the licensed songs like Aisle 10 but if it means we have to lose them to get JSRF to modern hardware that's a sacrifice I'll take one hundred times out of ten.
there's also nothing stopping them from reaching out to artists about the rights, or licensing new music in place of the old. so long as we keep the original tracks by Naganuma, Jacques, and Latch Bros, I'm fine.
