leading with simon belmont, ridley, and K rool also warrants ending strong
From a marketing standpoint. You want the bigger hitters near release to really maximize the hype. By doing it at the beginning you make people think there are even bigger things to come.
Smash 4 started with Megaman and ended with Bowser Jr.
Yeah, it ended with hype
At least for me
To be fair, Mewtwo did get announced as DLC shortly afterwards.
If you're only including 6 whole new movesets, it's a lot more logical to have the big 2 that people thought wouldn't happen (K Rool and Simon/Richter) as the final reveals, not the token expected Pokemon and friendly neighborhood paper pusher.
Granted, I think DLC will buff out that number, but it's honestly somewhat disappointing if that's the only amount of new ones out the gate, though the roster is still excellent and that with such a small amount of inclusions, FE Awakening was favored over the Zelda series again.
Good on him. He's fully aware of it.
I see so many creators get shitfaced by "fans" all the time. Sakurai doesn't need the stress of that on top of game dev too.
Banjo-Kazooie is the only one I can think of that would be uncontroversial, and none of the other third-party characters that could provide such a reaction are either plausible or demanded.
I could only imagine the reactions the community has over mundane tweets Sakurai posts about his life.
Sakurai: "Made some Hamachi sashimi with my wife. She is such a good cook!"
Fanbase interpretation: "Mipha is 110% confirmed for Smash Ultimate, with Undyne as her echo fighter. Send me threats if I do not follow up on this undeniable proof."
"Hamachi sure sounds a lot like Heihachi!"
Right yeah i think we may end up just with Ken and Inciniroar after all. And with this story mode obviously not going to be something at the same level of scale as Subspace Emmisary, this next and likely final pre-release Direct is almost sure to cause so much fucking rage amongst Smash fans lmao. Can't wait!

make the meme real
So, let's say the impossible happens and A Hat in Time gets representation and Hat Kid gets in. What would be the Hattytim stage? Mafia Town or would that just be Delfino Plaza twice? The spaceship
or would that be too similar to the Lylat Wars stages? The Conductor's Train or would that just be the Zelda: Spirit Tracks stage again? What would it be?
I could imagine a Time Rift themed stage. The background in those stages look nice with those huge clock towers floating about. And they could really shape the stage however they'd like.
I could imagine that they went ahead with announcing Simon given the leaks, to get them out of the way.
The longer time goes on the less likely I think a Rhythm Heaven fighter would be, particularly since it's not a hugely requested series in the first place. My last bastion of hope is with the leak and unused icon relating to the Chorus Kids in Smash 4, as well as the inclusion of the Sneaky Spirits in Smash Run. It feels to me like a rep from RH would be revealed fairly early on, since I'd imagine the reactions from most people who haven't played the games would probably be "oh okay, that's cool I guess", so they'd want them out of the way earlier.
A Time Rift stage would fit real nice for her.
It's pretty obvious the reason why Awakening because it was the game that saved the series from being shut down completely. Still, it does sucks.
why do you say that?
I wonder if the possibility of smash getting a testfire or online demo will depend on the retention rate of switch online subscriptions.
It's really weird how they moved up all the controllers and collectors edition stuff to November. I could see the demo dropping around that point.
Jesus Christ, Luigi's new final smash is so brutal

And people thought that Snake and Bayonetta were too mature for Smash, yikes! Maybe post a content warning or label it NSFW next time?
Well I'm only speculating, but IMO Sakurai's comment on having to prioritize all returning characters over having a shit ton of newcomers again like Smash 4 did says it all. They don't have unlimited resources and cuts have to be made to get the game where it's at now, and if you think they're seriously gonna prioritize a super mega huge SP campaign over more characters on launch when Smash has always been more about the MP component than the SP, then idk what to tell you lol. Not to mention they're on a crunch to get this game in before the Christmas holiday in order to maximize sales. They're not gonna want to delay shit like Brawl had to do, and the best way to avoid that is not going bonkers on content people will only play for the first week and then never touch again.
We'll find out in the next direct but yea whatever 'Spirits" ends up being, I'd wager it's something on a way smaller scale. I'd be very surprised to see stuff like full levels you can explore Kirby-style again, and if their are cut-scenes, I doubt they'll be as many as we got before. I'd sure love to be wrong thooooo but for now I sure as shit ain't expecting SE2.
Seems to me a lot of the budget of SSE went into the cinematics, there were a lot of them, just bringing another story mode on the scale of SSE without as many cinematics doesn't seem too farfetched to me.
Honestly I won't mind if "Spirits" is a rehashed version of Smash Run from 3DS but on a grander scale. That was fun to be honest.
Only if this plays during it

I mean yeah for sure, but when everyone is clamoring for Subspace 2, nine times out of ten it's because they're wanting another "SMASH: THE MOVIE" experience. Take that out and you'll still have disappointed people.
Really tho probably the strongest point against Subspace 2 is just the fact that Sakurai has always done something way different for each Smash entry's single-player mode. I'm def not expecting him to just do a cheaper rehash of Brawl's campaign again. I'd wager that 'Spirits' is gonna be something way different (and ofc smaller). But we'll seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
A different translation of Sakurai's interview mentions that they couldn't use the "original draft" of the direct that got delayed.
It probably just means some minor shuffle of games and presentation unless you want to go full conspiracy theory.
Man my dream reveal for Banjo kazooie would be a recreation of smash 64's intro With master hand rummaging through the toy chest before pausing and pulling out BK and causing me to shit my pants.
