My complaInts about this update were there being nothing useful to the average player cosmetically beyond those who wanted whacky animal costumes and the art style. Turns out there actually can be something cool looking on the right hat. My my opinion on valve putting in no gam development effort and of their anti-consumer corporate structure are unchanged, I made that clear in the discord.
If there's one thing I didn't miss in Scream Fortress, it's certainly the pumpkin crits
I'd say being a good game can be enough, Counter-Strike virtually did it. It was released by Valve on November 9th, 2000. Let's look at 2012, 12 years from 1.0 release, but really 13 years because it was a popular mod before Valve bought it. It has received bug fixes for a long time, but it hasn't received a content update in a really long time, the last time official maps were added was 2003. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/132597/84b52768-1006-432f-bc6b-6e989f2afbd1/cs1.62012.PNG It would be great to see farther back historical data if anyone knows where to find it as I wouldn't be surprised if it was past TF2's player count peak. On that graph, there is a steep drop in 2013 and while CS:GO was a part of that no question, it was not all that was a factor in early 2013. On February 14th 2013, Valve switched the engine to steampipe and forced mouse changes on veterans among several breaking changes that took months to iron out. On one hand, it was nice for an old game to still get updates, but having the updates break such a mature game pissed off the player-base to the point that some believed valve was sabotaging it for CS:GO. Anyways, CS is approaching 18 years from release and still getting 17k concurrent players at some hours, despite the release of 3 different counter-strikes and badly cow mangled updates deep into its lifecycle. Condition-Zero and CSS are nowhere to be seen in the top 100 games on steam, only time will tell how long CS:GO will last. Great multiplayer games can last more than 11 years on gameplay alone as you can really go far with solid mechanics and community. I wish I could see the alternate reality where Valve invested in making a TF2 a well-balanced competitive game and sponsored tournaments in 2010 instead of shoving the whole kitchen-sink into the game until they realized they had a problem and now have been stuck digging it out and "modernizing" it for the past few years. I enjoyed those updates and content a lot, but this game would have had a tough time surviving for long time without gun metal and tough break and similar to bail it out. https://steamcharts.com/app/10#All http://counterstrike.wikia.com/wiki/Counter-Strike_patches https://store.steampowered.com/stats/
As far as I know Valve probably wanted to test the waters with a free to play game under their name. Look at Alien Swarm. It gained zero revenue to my knowledge but they held an official release for it just the same as their other titles. I won't dispute the fact that going free to play has helped keep it alive but I'll rightfully consider it a double edged sword as I initially intended to get across. Initial impressions for when people just pick up the game, whether it was back in 2007 or today this remains important. It is illogical to assume the majority of today's playerbase consists of people who first played the game 11 years ago. I don't doubt people are held hostage by the shiny hats and cosmetics, but again this is not true for everyone. Similar to yourself, I've been playing Team Fortress 2 since the beta, but more than just that; Half Life, and Team Fortress Classic were what I started out with when it came to Valve based titles. Mods or not. At this point I believe the core game is at risk of losing itself to the bugs and instability of the engine as more and more temporary interest boosters are injected. And without an enjoyable core game, the economy will easily crumble like the decline seems to suggest. This was the original point I was making. As a peon who isn't privy to these numbers or has the economical know how to determine whether or not a majority of the playerbase uses these websites / the Steam Community Market and at a sustainable rate for the continued justification of TF2's existence, I can't agree or disagree with what you claim to be the case. Its a widely known game because its talked about among friends that play it and mention it to those who don't. It also just so happens to have a spot on the Steam Store under Valve's own name. Shiny hats alone is not enough to entice someone its worth their time and money. They need to first read about it somewhere but Valve isn't actively investing money to advertise it. Again, I don't have the statistics to prove this or that, but I'd think the majority of funds are from new players buying the over priced items on the store, before realizing they can obtain items for cheaper on the market. From there I think the majority of these new players go down the route of refraining from spending sizable amounts money and either quit, or never contribute any significant monetary gain to the game's revenue. Its the sheer turnover rate that brings in the money apart from the minority of users still heavily investing money. Potential, Obligation and the interest of the employees working at Valve. Its evident Valve doesn't like to displease, even if they fail to understand that silence is pretty harmful. The game still has the potential to expand into something even greater. Valve can't just pull the plug without upsetting a community that holds a slot in the top 10 played games on their services. And based on what we know about their work environment the interest the employee has is a factor. In the next sentence I explicitly state that I have not found another that suits my tastes. To claim that because I'm not used to a game thereby invalidating my judgement of whether or not its a game I'd enjoy playing is nonsensical. Putting sheer amounts of hours into something won't magically make you come to like it.
Trying to get back into the game, remember why I quit before: hackers and kicking. I've run into two servers with an aimbotter, who either never gets kicked or people end uip kicking the wrong person for some reason. Other times, I'll join a server and literally within 10 seconds get vote kicked. I have no idea why. I don't use sprays, I'm not on voice, my avatar isn't furry/anime/gore/porn, I'm not doing exploits, I'm not a hacker, and no reason is given for the kick or in chat. Othertimes I'll be playing good and some salty enemy does a kick vote that passes because I'm near the top of the scoreboard. There's no way to report people for abusing votekick either so it's a roll of the dice if I can even finish a match without running into a hacker or getting kicked. It sucks because I still love this game, but with matchmaking being the only way for me to find populated servers with specific levels/modes, I'm stuck with this shitty luck.
Putting sheer numbers of hours into something also increases the odds of sticking around further due to perceived sunk costs of emotional and time investment if not money. That’s a big factor in why games retain player bases, especially mobile pay to win games.
The enemy team can't start a votekick targeting you. Only your team can.
yeah whatever. I sympathized alot with your concerns in the past but you're just one bloated hypocrite. Not cool man.
You took two of my most extreme, blatantly hyperbole posts as coexisting and then somehow forgot everything else I’ve stated about the update, and my criticisms of valve the entire time you’ve known me because something I said mere seconds after unboxing potentially hundreds of dollars? God damn you’re thick. I was being sarcastic on the unusual unbox post- that’s what people do literally every time valve releases something or a good thing happens and I felt like making an excited, ridiculous post like that, knowing would be taken as such since I NEVER go there. I will spell it out for you: No, unboxing a hat does not absolve valve or this update’s lack of content or development. I am sorry for misleading you with the ONE thing I have ever said in that direction and will resume my exor-like beratement of valve because I’m never ever allowed to be dramatic or silly when good things happen. Jesus.
Well, to hellmet's defense, even if that wasn't your goal and you were merely riding on the fad of being excited about getting an unusual. he's kinda right. You were one of the first to jump ship calling it a dead game and yet still there were you, buying keys and opening crates. if getting an pretty hat does not absolve valve for its lack of effort in the update, then why are you even giving them your money?
Because I’m a free man and I felt like it 🤷‍♂️ And I do like the patriot peak, and was actually hoping to get a new effect on it. My friend Muhai helped make that effect, and that was part of the reason I flew off the handle there, as it was the nicest one of the ones they made. But you’re right, I suppose that’s little excuse for contradicting myself even in excitement or jest. Sorry.
TF2 doomsayers: TF2 IS DEAD THERE ARE NO UPDATES TF2: [U P DA T E S] TF2 doomsayers: WTF IS THIS SHIT I DIDN'T WANT THIS
That's even weirder then. I guess if theres no repercussion then people just randomly vote kick teammates?
That's essentially a staple of the Casual™ experience.
I'm actually pretty stunned by how many aimbotters there are in TF2 now. I stopped playing about...2? 3 years ago? Right before they did away with the classic main menu and turned it all over to matchmaking and casual / competitive stuff etc. Before that, I can genuinely say I could count the hackers I'd come across in the last 5 years prior on one hand. Now since I've come back about 6 months ago, quite literally every night I am encountering 3 or 4. It's crazy. What's the reason behind it, have new hacks been developed that are no longer being detected, or has Valve just stopped caring? I don't personally care, it doesn't change how much I enjoy the game at all, it's just kinda hilarious. Actually, as a huntsman sniper 99% of the time now, I kind of like the challenge. Just surprised how fast it all seemed to change right after I stopped playing, crazy. Also, how long is this halloween event intended to last for? Did I read somewhere it was until some early day of November? Just curious. I was playing Mann Manor the last few nights and gosh darn, what a blast of nostalgia from back when that first came out. I still remember the rush of the randomly spawning presents, half the server would be texture hacking them and stealing them before you ever had a chance lol. Still have my few sets of paper bag masks from those days, love it.

I think the aim botter problem was REALLY bad about a year and a half ago but it's calmed down a fair bit (at least on the Aus servers) after the LMAOBox kiddies got banned and mass rage quit. Nowadays it's mostly silent hacks (which there are ways of dealing with) and blatant rage hackers but I haven't seen one of those for a few months now. There use to be this dude with a Pony themed rage hack bot gang that periodically stalked Aus match making servers but I guess he moved on.
I remember a few month ago with the whole catbot mess infesting popular maps like harvest and suijin so i had to stop playing them to avoid hackers, but even that wasnt enough as that fake valve employee and his cohorts of bots invaded servers and started kicking anyone who tried to kick them. So things are definetely more stable than in the past right now.
Geez! Look at all of these people unboxing Unusuals from crates! It's been THREE days and I haven't found anything besides weapons and War Paint Crates!
Jeez, thought the update would've been the heavy update. Pretty sad that it wasn't. Kinda don't want to sell my tf2 items, but it just feels like a waste if updates are going to be this sparse.
Please. I'd rather have arguing and controversies over whiny naysaying and pessimism.
that post was by far one of the most calm ones as far as pessimism goes in this forum, yknow
I'm still surprised that TF2 number doubled when the halloween update comes in. I know, I know, its a common trend according to previous post/threads, but still is a great achievement. New and Old players enjoy the maps and general shitfiesta of october and that's coolio.
Still needlessly dreary. The only thing the update didn't have was balance changes. There's new content, community-based content, Valve-made content, and new maps.
I'm not exactly surprised people are displeased given it seems like the Jungle-Inferno wait times are gonna be the usual ones because boy that sucks ass I still have hopes for smissmas toh

I feel like Ghost Fort, and KOTH maps in general, are proof that Valve doesn't really play their game much. Anyone who plays that map once would think "maybe Merasmus shouldn't spawn a dozen times in a round". Meanwhile, non-event KOTH maps are far too short, sometimes lasting as little as ten minutes before the match results screen pops up. Back in the day, you could play KOTH for ~40 minutes with no interruption, and it was faster to start another game than it is now.

I sold most of my items in 2015-2016 cause I was dissapointed with pretty much every update past Love and War. Just returned to the game and slowly accumulating stuff again :s
Except I didn't say anything along the lines of that. Stop projecting what you're used to seeing here onto me, it's pretty annoying to be portrayed as another person complaining and calling the game dead. I personally expected the heavy update to happen in summer and already made the promise that if the Halloween update came first, I would've sold my items. Didn't say anything about the game being dead, as it obviously isn't with this player count. Game's still great and fun, and I have all the functionality of still playing the game without all the shiny stranges and unusuals. It's not whiney pessimism and naysaying they don't want to keep 600$ locked into something that they don't feel like they're getting any significant value out of anymore. That's what I was saying, surprised that needed to even be interpreted with my post history.
