The problem is, if they already played through the content the year it was released, they're not gonna bother with it this time around. I'd love to play Wave 666 with weird and fun loadouts, but I did that the entire time it was released initially. This reasoning only works for people who couldn't experience the content before, and therefore it's "new" content to them. It also doesn't help that you can literally play any of the halloween maps with their modifiers now anyway, including levelling up your Gargoyle.
Are you sure about this? I have not tested it, but IIRC the soul Gargoyle only levels up when the event is actually active.
Gargoyle can level up as long as halloween is enabled, be it through eternaweens, full moons, actual halloween, or forced map settings like mvm_ghosttown
you have like 30 maps a massive amount of gamemodes and the like; is this really not enough to routinely go through every year? This isnt a single map like Overwatch ya know.
I just tested this and I disagree. Robot "souls" level up the Gargoyle. I loaded up Wave 666 on my test server, gave myself god mode (cheeky monkey) and killed a few dozen robots. Got exactly zero upticks on my Gargoyle. I'll try the same with with tf_forced_holiday 2 and a human opponent in a moment, but I suspect the same is true.
Like 30 maps (14, a majority of which are reskins) that were all released separately year by year and made available for well over a week. So yes, it isn't a lot. Need I remind you the game's been out for 11 years and has been doing halloween events for 9 of them.
14 maps definitively sounds like a lot though. I mean how many is "too many"?
And the majority of the playerbase only plays them for a week before moving on.
It's a lot, but it's not a lot when a majority of them are reskinned base maps with very little additions. At least Junkenstein in Overwatch is a wholly exclusive map and event. Mann Manor is as fun as Mountain Lab but with a somewhat ill-fitting invincible NPC gimmick. Lakeside Event is fun with the Merasmus addition and the new areas in the map but wears out its welcome. Hell-tower is about the only map that I'd say is worth experiencing outside of just for the Halloween gimmicks, it's actually a very solid change to an already enjoyable map.
don't you fucking diss mann manor sir.
and you're comparing them to the junkenstein map is is even smaller than eyeduct and its not even a pvp map. what
Do I even have to dignify this with a response or are you genuinely trying to argue "well junkenstein is even tinier and NOT pvp!!!" as an argument for "Tf2 halloween maps have been out forever and are mostly reskins" Like did you just google "junkenstein map overwatch" or something?
eternaween isn't near enough constant to act as a "restriction removal" especially when the majority don't even think about it. also they aren't from last year?
I consider Eternaween a waste of money and/or metal. They offer a nice gimmick, but doesn't last enough. On the topic of updates: I hope we receive some small artwork or clever comment on the patchnotes. The TF2 is good at few things, and comedy is one of them.
I really wish there was a populated and easy to use system to match with people who don't shoot enemies with the rocket jumper and heavies who don't use the brass beast on offense.
servers only lasting two rounds makes eternaween almost useless. Matchmaking as well
It lasts 2 hours tho
Because the server resets every 2 rounds, the Eternaween status resets too. It'll say that it lasts for 2 hours, but the truth is once the server changes youre kind of fucked.
Ooooh, My bad. i've never really notice cause i'm kinda playing 2fort casual 24/7 where it goes over 4 hours.
are we on the same page? i might have misunderstood your point, but i'd gladly ask for a clarification, because so far your argument is that "most halloween maps are a just a reskin and are old" and that is a bad thing. most if not all of the halloween-version of these maps plays diferently due to the added hazards and in the case of some of them feature new elements that are not part of the "base" map (hell, you can even say some of them were even tied to the game's lore). as far as i remember people were basically theorizing wich map would get a halloween event due to the amount of changes and wacky shit you'd get from said version. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/132767/bd05a408-a4b2-4f7f-a591-7338dbd0046f/screenshot-wiki.teamfortress.com-2018.10.16-23-13-11.jpg Junkenstein its almost a tower defense arena with 3-4 boses and thats all, wich in turn is a reskined version of the kingsrow event. even the blackwatch event map featured more gameplay elements and was far more elaborated than it in every regard. halloween cosmetic restriction
...All you did was copy-paste the TF2 halloween maplist, say "but they do tho", and say "but Junkenstein is just PVE". Again. Are you even understanding what I'm saying or are you just trying to argue for the sake of it (again)?
tmw you join a SourceOP server and you still got adminship from 9 years ago awkward
ban everyone who's playing, then leave.
Junkenstein is just the bridge area of Eichenwald with a few minor changes. It's fun as fuck but don't even pretend it's a bigger show of content than something like Ghost Fort, Hellstone, or Mann Manor. Even when Scream Fortress has been entirely Workshop based, the TF Team has always stepped up when it counted (with the exception of last year, because we got Jungle Inferno literally a week prior). The Halloween events are always loads of fun and the only map I'd describe as even slightly lackluster is Carnival of Carnage (which still has some dynamite themeing and gameplay changes).
I'm going to bring up the fact that Overwatch has more than one Halloween (and Christmas!) maps. First year was Eichenwalde, with a small section of it used for the Junkenstein mode, and a version of Hollywood all Halloween'd up. This year they also converted one of their deathmatch maps for Halloween. For the most part they play almost exactly the same as their non-festive counterparts. Just thought I'd butt in with this information before we kept going on about how Junkenstein is just one tiny bridge in Overwatch.
...I never said the maps were lackluster. I never said Junkenstein was amazing either. It was still an entirely new gamemode that (at its time of release) was completely unheard of before in the Overwatch communitya nd generated a lot of interest in an already insanely popular game. In fact, I even outright said that the lateset Overwatch halloween event is garbage and a great example of what TF2 shouldn't do, because they haven't added anything notable for gameplay with it. Yes, the Tf2 maps are fun. Don't lie and try to make them out as more than they are though, most of them are, factually, reskinned existing maps with very minor tweaks to make the gameplay unique for a short period of time. They can be as beautiful as you want. It doesn't mean people will suddenly start breaking out their old Tf2 accounts to play them again if they add pretty much nothing notable. Mann Manor is a fun map. I still play it once a month because Mountain Lab exists and the only difference besides visuals is HHH (who is a nuisance at best) and Pumpkin bobs though. Lakeside_event and merasmus is fun. Eyeaduct is fun. Ghost Fort is fun. They're all still bland unbalanced KOTH maps that are also frequently played. I really don't get why you two can't comprehend what I was originally making a point of - the TF2 halloween maps have been out for years and as fun as they were and are, they were and are also constantly available anyways. There's no excuse that something can't be done this year beyond workshop cosmetics, and if something isn't done, it'll be disappointing. Maybe you assumed that by me even vaguely criticizing a part of the game, it meant that I hated everything about Halloween in TF2 or something? I really couldn't tell you. If you've experienced Hightower before, I can see you easily getting 2 or 3 hours of fun out of a Helltower in a full server. Same with any other map. I wasn't criticizing the maps. I was criticizing that people really think a Halloween update brandishing these maps that are playable around the calendar, and at the forefront of every single Halloween update, would be satisfactory.
That perfectly encapsulates how the SourceOP server(s) (only 2Fort is ever populated) are run. There was a time when the SourceOP 32 player 2Fort server was the #1 server in TF2. It's died a long and painful death due to neglect. It's fitting that the owner is Valve employee DrunkenF00l. His steam profile is hilarious: https://steamcommunity.com/id/drunkenf00l The state of his server, not so much.
should we start discussing where we will be moving to if facepunch shuts down for good?
the main reason why people are confused is, as was already said, there being a massive amount of maps, if reskins or not, dedicated for halloween with development resources clearly being incredibly limited, id rather have them invest ANY work done in a way that permanently affects tf2 outside of a 2 week gimmick
Is DrunkenF00l still the owner of SOP, I thought he transferred it to a friend when he joined Valve because of conflict of interest or something I forget the details? I just visited the forums and it appears Butane is running the place. It's good they nuked the trade section, what a mess it was at one point with some of the mods they had. I miss the 32 player valve maps, those long 5cp games seemed so epic.
