That actually did happen though, assuming the leak is true. It's just nobody expected someone else to actually leak a full photo.
Yeah trying explain to someone last year how the Grinch and Chad Ganondorf leaked the whole smash roster and how some tailgating promotional video sponsored by Wendy’s ended up being the key to that leak.

It all comes together into a delightful package meal of the insiders getting blown up by the real leak that they then spend weeks desperately insisting is fake because it contradicts their actually false information.

With the start of this week, things will start moving very quickly, especially with smash with a direct probably next or next-next week showcasing a bunch of stuff, winter and how it affects us in general and halloween
not to forget that decent chunk of people will get to play smash bros earlier than the 7th, and there possibly floating a demo around

If this leak is true, that's exactly what happened. The only difference is that enough "evidence" was found that 4chan users could track down the person related to the leak.
So someone posted that an old 4chan thread lines up perfectly as to where isaac is located in the Grinch leak.

tl;dr: Some people initially thought Isaac was cut from the September Direct due to his earth-based abilities. Most people dismissed this because Isabelle's reveal was meant to go alongside the new Animal Crossing game's announcement, as well as the fact that her fighter number immediately follows K. Rool. However, someone recently rediscovered that, after Isabelle's reveal, the website's banner appeared as if something had been cropped out. According to the Grinch leak, that's exactly where Isaac is supposed to appear in the final banner. The post I linked to also posits that we were supposed to get an echo reveal, and that the three reveals (Isaac, Ken(?), Isabelle) would've entirely filled the special edition's box art and made the box theory impossible. That would also explain why the Grinch leak implies we're supposed to receive seven reveals in the span of a month, because we were originally meant to receive five.

It makes sense? I thought it was a little weird at first, the idea of presenting seven new characters, but if that's true, then it's originally supposed to be five which is much more manageable. Wow.

I'm usually extremely stubborn regarding leaks, but at this point I really am convinced. There are too many things pointing to this being more than just a prank.
Imagine telling someone back when the game was announced that the roster was gonna be leaked by the fucking Grinch of all things.

Pre-orders are such a pain. I "pre-ordered" Smash Switch back in October when the Amazon Prime bonus was about to go away for a cheeky $15 saved. Apparently it won't take my payment until the day it ships, which would be convenient if I didn't already have the money, and just makes me suspicious that if way too many people pre-order the game, I'll be fucked and they'll cancel my order since I have no monetary investment.
Honestly if you still think the leak is fake I don't think there's any way to convince you.
