Super Smash Bros. General v16: Everyone is STICKERS!

Eh, different strokes for different folks.
I really enjoy the games for their charm, humor as well as how they play. Shantae's funny and likeable, the fact she's not hard on the eyes is just a bonus.
I'm sure there are plenty of people who believe her popularity is due to her appearance so I don't fault you for that. I'd be naive to say that hasn't affected it.
But I also believe looks only get you so far, and she wouldn't have endured if that was all she had going for her.
But I digress.
I'm not going to pretend her chances at DLC are great, but again, I'm an optimist. And if it doesn't happen well at least she's represented as a Spirit which is still leagues better than being ignored entirely.
Nothing conclusive of course, but:
Banjo returning to his classic design for recent figures and toys, something he hasn't done even in Rare Replay.
Microsoft having a talk with Nintendo during lunch at E3.
The leaked Nintendo 64 classic being conveniently announced soon, perfect time for Banjo Kazooie to be put on it.
Nintendo's site having updated more modern looking art for the game, even though most classic games on their site have crappy low quality images.
People's "sources" saying it's DLC, of course, that means nothing.
That's about it really.
It better be. Because if its Steve. Be prepared for this model to be everywhere forever

I dunno about hard evidence unless there's something I missed, but I feel like the biggest points in Banjo's favor would be:
Microsoft and Nintendo are all buddy-buddy about cross-play as of late, which means good non-hostile relations between them as companies.
Microsoft has licensed Rare stuff to Nintendo in the past, mainly for Diddy Kong Racing DS.
Microsoft is practically BEGGING Nintendo to put Banjo in Smash, they've outright said it's theirs for the taking if they wanna use him.
Banjo/Kazooie were considered alongside other Rare characters like James Bond and Joanna Dark back before Nintendo sold them to Microsoft, so we know Sakurai has had that discussion before.
They put K. Rool in, so they proved they're not avoiding characters typically associated with Rare games for fear of giving Microsoft free advertising (which I believe was a concern at one point, hence why K. Rool and pals were all but absent from like 2000 onward).
And of course, I feel like Sakurai knows (or at least, has to know now, considering how people reacted to K. Rool) what a fucking boon of a get Banjo would be for Ultimate. People wanted him so badly that he's currently getting bombarded in death threats on Twitter because the Grinch Leak was fake, the audience is there. Some are pitiably unhinged, but there and ready to buy.
On the topic of spirits, I have a very, very bad feeling that this will be how they will implement the Doom Slayer in Smash Ultimate.
"We have heard your cries. So we would like to announce today. That we are adding Banjo & Kazooie to Smash Ultimate in a free update...as a Spirit for Duck Hunt."
That's fair. Though I still wonder when the planning phase started for DLC since I remember reading a discussion either here or Reddit that DLC was not on their minds for a long time during the development but hey, I know nothing and could just be misremembering.
On another note, I'm curious who had been decided, but predicting what Sakurai will do seems more pointless than ever because this is the man who made Pirhana Plant playable so god only knows who our five DLC fighters are
The only way I could see Rhythm Heaven being represented is using one character as a vessel (Chorus Kids likely) and have each of their attacks be based on a different minigame. Wrestler would basically come down to a generic Luchador doing vague rhythm related wrestling moves and not much else. Most I could see him being involved is that Chorus Kid's side smash would be his "Whoa! You go big guy! Hut-tah!" flex or something.
Yeah tbh I mostly want Shantae in because she a qt. If we're looking for an indie rep, she'd be 5 or 6 down on the list of candidates. The only thing she really has going for her over other characters is that she got her roots on a Nintendo console, unlike more popular options like Shovel Knight, Steve, or Sans.
If you are legitimately saying that Sans or Minecraft Steve deserve a spot more than basically amounts to the big sister of most modern indie game characters:

Shantae is cool and all but she's a literally who compared to Shovel Knight
Regardless of how long he's been around, you can't deny he's basically the Mario of indie games.
honestly if we were to get an indie rep, i'd want Quote from Cave Story over something like Shovel Knight or Shantae
I think the only reason I wouldn't be hyped for Shantae is because of just how much of her fanbase is because she's a sexy genie lady. Most of the rewards for completing certain requirements in her new game is just sexy art of her and the various other characters. I'm not saying that's entirely what she's about, but she has the same problem as 2B where people are primed to think of her as "sexy genie platform lady what do a sexy genie dance" instead of an actual character. If she turned into her monkey form in the game I'd probably play her though
re: banjo inclusion - there's also the fact Banjo was for sure very popular around the time of the Ballot, which Sakurai is using for at least most of the character decisions. We may not have the ballot results, but we do have the results of many fans polls run at the same time as the ballot, which can give a general idea of how it probably went. I've posted it before, but here it is again. just to update this tho since it's pretty out dated:

he's likely at the top now. and then of course is the fact this is paid DLC. They want something that will make them the most money, so obviously they'd want something with a lot of fan demand behind it. that's probably why everyone is expecting Steve to begin with lol, of course a minecraft character would get tons of kids buying it. tho granted that logic didn't stop them from nuking Isaac anyways... But yeah DLC seems like an ideal time to bust out the really big fan favorites that didn't make launch roster. hence I'm def expecting bandana dee and banjo for two of those DLC slots.
and yeah just to expand on the previous post mentioning Banjo and Melee:
The Definitive List of Unused Fighters in Smash – Source Gaming

“Incidentally, including a character from Rare in Smash would be difficult for various reasons. I know there are some people who think that Banjo & Kazooie are an obvious inclusion, but that’s unlikely for a variety of legal and financial reasons.”
so yea he must've tried at some point. but times change and the characters only become more obscure with casual players since then, so really whooooo knows.
I am keeping my expectations in check this time around. I hope for Banjo & Kazooie and Phoenix Wright. I am expecting another Pokemon and Fire Emblem character.and a Xenoblade 2 character.
Yea people keep discussing a second season of fighters like it's def gonna happen, but I keep going back to that one moment in the direct, where they announced the Rex skin for the Mii fighters and said that the Xenoblade game arrived too late for them to have taken notice and included him. If there really is gonna be a second season of characters, why would they have done that? Why not just wait and make it later?
idk i think people are getting ahead of themselves and again setting themselves up for disappointment with this assumption of a second DLC season. Sakurai's gonna want a break sooner or later. Plus there was no stipulation made that the fighter pass doesn't include any possible future DLC, something they def would've had to do if there was gonna be another season. I think these 5 DLC packs may be it tbh.
...Or they're just waiting to see how the Fighter pass plays out, just like they did with the different character DLC system of Sm4sh, where there was no pass, rather bundles you could buy after characters had come out.
Sure but that doesn't really change what I said. They could still have waited with Rex if the prospect of more seasons of DLC was actually being considered. That character had a ton of fan demand behind it, so jumping straight to Mii costume just sounds like this is it to me. But yeah it could still go either way, so we'll seeeeeee
Odds are at this point that all the remaining DLC characters will be 3rd party, I just can't see them adding any 1st party or 2nd party characters without Mii costume or assist trophy upgrades that wouldn't be controversial (i.e. yet more FE) outside of a Rhythm Heaven rep, a Gen 8 Pokemon or Bandana Waddle Dee.
Skull Kid, Isaac, Spring Man, Lyn and Waluigi are assist trophies, Rex is a costume and I doubt Geno will be DLC by virtue of there already being Mario DLC.
I am 200% on board with Doomguy being a playable character.
who the fuck made this model, the mystery is killing me and I need to know who is responsible for this

Aaaand so it begins
Some guy on /v/ when the Grinch leak was in full swing.

It was before that. It was when Verge was the only person people would listen to. It was made in response to "there was minecraft representation"

So they’re going to show a bitnof World of Light on the Nintendo Live.
Minecraft is debatably THE single most important video game of the decade no matter how hard you want to think otherwise. It has presence on every modern Nintendo console and is one of the first games people think of when they think indie-developed. The only two roadblocks is translating Steve's visual design into Smash in a way that feels both faithful to how he's supposed to look while fitting into the Smash universe, and getting Microsoft to give Nintendo the OK.
Undertale is more because of popularity and the Nintendo-based inspirations for Undertale such as Paper Mario and Mother.
I can fully agree with this. Quote has been an indie icon since Cave Story released in 2004. Probably among the oldest well-known indie game characters.
Cave Story was released on DSi, Wii, 3DS [twice], and Switch. That doesn't include the numerous PC versions and ports on other platforms, but it seems that Pixel is infatuated with Nintendo and their hardware. Granted, the game is based off of two franchises that have been exclusively or mostly on Nintendo platforms, so that'd make sense. Ikachan, one of Pixels earliest games, has an exclusive remake on the 3DS and he even programmed a microgame for the "big name games" in WarioWare DIY back in the day.
The weapon variety Quote has could theoretically provide an incredible moveset (i.e. changing weapons similar to Shulk with the Monado Arts or just having the weapons as specific attacks like Megaman) and the alternate costumes could even have a good variety too. In my mind I could see the normal/easy/hard mode colors work as standard skins, with a 4th being the Mimiga Mask version of the standard one, then the latter four costume slots being identical but for Curly instead. Final Smash could be an exaggerated spur charge shot, and he could potentially have mechanics based off of the experience crystals that enemies drop.
Really, if he were chosen as an indie rep, he'd have a ton of potential that would make him stand out. A lot more than someone like Shantae/Shovel Knight that primarily have close-combat attacks in their canonical games.
Steve would fit better as a Mii Costume. Any other minecraft representation would fit better as a stage or assist
Daisy was just shown as a major spirit. So I don't think it matters what characters are or aren't.
