But people would have slammed the PS2 port of Half-Life for having such low-quality models. it needed to happen.
You should know that in the early 00's (before HL2) there was a MASSIVE community dedicated to making hipoly HL1 models.
You can see them in Sven Co-op, DiamonD Half-Life, Ambient.Impact any of DAV's mods... and those are just the ones that you can still find some trace of this decade.
Marphy (then Revenant100) can attest to the Half-Life Improvement Team's work.
Yes, nowadays the HD stuff is a bit gaudy and out of place, but you should see this kind of stuff the same way we see pumping tons of graphics mods into Skyrim. The original content will age better since it's what most of us remember, but the graphics mods were always there.
If you're really that put off by HD models then use this:

Jesus, I mean I prefer the original models too, but it seems a bit ridiculous to get so hung up on them that it singlehandedly ruins Echoes for you.
take it ez theyre just a bunch of ugly models
I think there's a kind of uncanny valley contrasting between certain assets in HL1 that makes me feel like either everything should be HD to keep consistency, or keep everything original and get the authentic retro experience. But it's whatever floats your boat, and that post I made in support of Echos was a 100% playerthrough the HD and it didn't change my ultimate feelings on the raw mod fever itself.
I still havent finished echoes due to my save being fucked from a bug but the inconsistency of the models is what bothered me as well as the bizarre conversations npcs have due to them using available lines from the original game.
It's one thing if you simply prefer the original models but I don't understand this vitriol. Did an HD Bullsquid fuck your mom?
My only gripe with the HD models was the beretta and its animations (same animations as the OP4 deagle so ridiculous recoil for 9mm, plus slide doesn't go back), the m4 ar, and the shotgun stock.
And the fugly looking G-Man. What is up with your neck and shoulders, dude?

spas 12 stocks make me gag in every game they appear in
What are the details? I don't want to watch nearly two hours just to find out.
Daily reminder that there is one, and exactly one, true Barney.

Actually, the HD G-Man is supposed to look like this:
http://combineoverwiki.net/images/6/67/Gman_hlof_hd.png
This was the G-Man in the HD packs for both Blue Shift and Opposing Force. It was only original Half-Life itself that got the crap-looking G-Man.
The rubbish G-Man was actually an earlier version that was done for Dreamcast Half-Life. I guess they accidentally left it in the HD files for Half-Life, rather than the improved model that they had developed for the PC release. Instead only the expansions got the improved model.
At least until Blue Shift's 1.0.0.1 patch, which patched the HD pack (as well as fixing some minor issues in Blue Shift itself). It fixed the missing animations on HD models (the ones that weren't used in regular Half-Life but were used in various mods), and it gave HD Half-Life the same better-looking G-Man that was in the expansions.
When Steam first got an option to install the HD pack, Valve idiotically used the unpatched version of Blue Shift's HD pack. So once again it meant that anyone who installed the HD pack would have animation problems in various mods, and a crap-looking G-Man. Nowadays, the Steam HD pack does use the correct updated models, though.
Well that's my new desktop background.
There are packs with Gearbox HD and further HD models with the fixed animations, it has been more than a decade and Valve still not updated them ( we only got some fixes like the original OST for OF and BS and the blue HUD for BS, but others like the rest of languages are still missing )..
The PS2 model has more detail for the ones curious:

And then like it happened with all the PS2 models, the community used them as base to further improve them:

( Is hard to appreciate it on an image, both in HLMV and in game looks way better than the model from above ).
People who rants about the HD models never bothered to check for the community fixes / improvements, and that's a fact.
TBH, the hate for the HD models is vastly exaggerated.
Some of the original models have more charm then the HD ones (like barney), but not all of them. I think nostalgia is a pretty big factor here for a lot of people...
The improved GMan model was also done for the Sega Dreamcast and is what's available in both leaked builds of the game.
If they make it VR it had better be good. A shitty Half-Life game that's also VR can kill Valve's attempts at making both Half-Life and VR games, and harm VR development for other devs.
half life made me love the stockless spas-12. folding stock, fixed stock, i dont care, if you got a spas-12 let me make it naked
HLVR sounds somewhat neat and could work on paper.
But when I think about it realistically, all I can think about is dual wielding indestructible metal barrels and just using them as shields to get close and slam them into enemies.
I basically already abridged what was said (there wasn't much info anyway). Gearbox was working on OF and Valve kept coming in and asking for changes. Because of Valve's structure, it was exceptionally annoying/weird for Gearbox because they work/worked like a traditional studio. Plus Sierra breathing down their necks to get things done didn't help, thus some animosity arose between Gearbox and Valve. Miscommunication/lack thereof any communication was the major proponent and led to the two companies basically "splitting ties" or otherwise not being on good terms with each other (moreso Gearbox looking at Valve this way, rather than both having this animosity).
You know I wish HD GMan models just made his skin flesh-toned. I know it's authentic to his weird lizardman appearance in the LD pack but it just looks fucking weird and not in a good, creepy way when he has this weird rock-like skin tone. It looks like a bad model.
If Valve want's to make something revolutional in FPS genre, VR seems like a safe bet, because noone really knows how to make a good game there yet. If they would make another HL game as usual, they would met reviews saying that it's more of the same, or that design is too old for current gaming. And they plan to sell their HMD at loss, so more people can join the fun. At least those are the rumors. That would benefit them greatly (Steam being basically VR monopoly after that), so it makes sense.
Huh, I didn't realise that! I remember some old promotional image for Dreamcast Half-Life had the rubbish-looking HD G-Man.
So clearly it got replaced with the improved HD G-Man model during the Dreamcast game's development... and yet somehow was accidentally resurrected and included in the Half-Life HD pack.
Took me a month to notice there was a new thread and that people didn't just stop talking.
Must have been a sad month for you.
I started to get suspicious once the Noclip documentary came out, but I forgot to check that day anyway.
I like the change to M4 (Actually a Colt Model 727). It felt more appropriate for the soldiers who were deployed there and what they were expected to contend with. There's also early screenshots of soldiers with similar weapons, so it was considered once before.
The G stands for Gargoyle.
Having completed Echoes and still hungry for some GoldSrc action, I decided to check some other mods I haven't played. Downloaded Residual Life, since it was in the RTSL's Hall of Fame and all, and goddamn this is a mod which really knows how to outstay its welcome. It starts off nice enough, being a remix of some HL and OpFor, but then just drags on and on and on, repeating similar fights over and over again. The fights are also not particularly thrilling either, with the game being prone to spamming teleporting vorts in the exact same spot. The maps also get unnecessarily large, with long empty halls and dead ends that serve no purpose. Pacing is all over the place, with some maps being non-stop fights and some being empty pointless walks; some maps give you lots of supplies, while some have little to none. There's also no sense of direction or story, but guess that's fair enough, with it being a mod which uses almost nothing but HL1's voicelines and textures.
Got stuck towards the end because the next map refused to load, and I'm probably not finishing it.
These are the words of every single person who has not tried a VR headset.
There is also no reason to assume that, regardless of the spread of VR, it will somehow completely replace traditional 2D monitor gaming, that would never happen even if you could buy a VR headset with motion controllers for 20 bucks and everyone had one.
I also hope they don't make HLVR playable outside of VR because that would probably mean making huge compromises with the VR version, not utilizing it to its full potential, completely defeating the point of making it VR in the first place. Not to mention the fact that HLVR shifting a decent amount of people into the VR market would be a benefit for both everyone in the VR market (developers, hardware makers and consumers alike) but it would also be a further step in the process of VR becoming truly affordable.
I should also add that you can buy a windows mixed reality headset for $200, the $500 barrier of entry for a PC VR kit with motion controllers no longer exists.
As a Half-Life fan with (relatively minor, but still painful) physical disabilities and serious sight issues if they make the next Half-Life game VR exclusive then I'm never going to be able to play it. I can't wear a VR headset for long without serious disorientation and playing one for a long enough session to actually get into a game is pretty much impossible, nevermind the fact that I can barely make out a lot of what's in it because of my differing sight in each eye, so I really hope they make it PC-accessible too for people who don't want to stand up for the entire damn time.
