Like Murphy said, it's how it was meant to be played. OpenGL made everything look too blurry. It kills the original aesthetic.
Huh, I thought the lighting was a little dull but I always though it was just my nostalgia goggles messing up my perception. Thanks for the info by the way. Although I've still gotta admit, running the game on modern hardware using software does still involve a lot of compromises, especially now that I can't even seem to get the game to load in software mode.
I had no idea OpenGL changed the lighting, I also thought my nostalgia goggles were adding some vividness to the game. I haven't touched software HL1 in well over a decade, maybe it's time to dig out my CD and play through it again
For reference, this is what point texture filtering (what Marphy calls texture filtering disabled) looks like in SharpLife, with overbright off and on in c1a0: https://imgur.com/a/dwLRRMU The monitors actually look like they're turned on! Also i disabled texture resizing altogether for this, so this is uploading the original textures at original resolution.
For those that have problems getting software rendering to work try this: If software rendering crashes Half-Life when you try to use it, try using the compatibility options on hl.exe in your Half-Life game folder. Make sure to tick "Reduced colour mode" and set it to 16-Bit colour. I also have "Disable full-screen optimisations" checked but you -might- be able to get away with leaving that alone. I think 16-Bit colour is the important one. Seems to work for me on the Steam version. Also when in software rendering you probably shouldn't use widescreen or change field of view, widescreen just stretches the view and changing the fov causes the view model to disappear.
Looks like software mode maxes out at 1366x768 or so. Is that correct or should I be able to higher than that in the menu? IIRC setting the resolution to 1200p in the launch options just breaks the game.
I'm kinda late commenting on this but that shit looks like something out of Quake moreso than Half-life
Software renderer aside, didn't they also change a bunch of shit from the retail to steam versions? MP5 rate of fire in particular comes to mind.
As far as I know this is only possible with a CRT unless your monitor has a native resolution that the software tenderer uses
yes func_elevators eat your feet and garg stomp's physics was fucked with
Speaking of resolution, why did old games like Quake and other id titles of that area have that "zoom in/out" option for the playable window? The option that zooms the window out and adds a border to the edges of the screen. What was the deal with that?
Performance boost
I remember specifically when you couldn't beat Blue shift because the elevator would kill you, and they had to patch it.
I believe that was retail update 1.1.1.0, the same one that removed viewroll.

These are frame rate issues unrelated to any patched version of the game. You can see it happen in LGR's video (running the original disc install) when he's killed by the elevator in Power Up. Half-Life was never intended to run at a constant 60 fps, and the vast majority of period hardware certainly wasn't capable of that. It was designed to run with an average fps of roughly 20-30 max.
A bunch of issues were recently moved from the Steam for Linux repo to the Half-Life repository: Issues · ValveSoftware/halflife · GitHub Could be it's just cleanup, or maybe they're preparing to fix stuff.
I was just playing on Steam HL, did they actually fix music cutting out after map changes?
https://youtu.be/zPiAK_RP8dU Good to see that this was made
Is there any real difference between the Beta and the regular branch in steam Half-Life? I remember that was the only way to get Opposing Force music but does it matter anymore?
That's now in the regular Op4 branch. That's a problem with Windows NT I believe. I don't think it even worked right on Win2K or XP. I remember getting compatibility warnings on XP at least. If you can find an older version, use DirectX.
Has anybody ever managed to get FastDL to download files with spaces in GoldSource? Because it looks like it won't work without an engine update: FastDL does not URLEncode the request URI · Issue #2056 · ValveS..
I remember hearing about this problem some years ago so i think not.
https://youtu.be/3tmACsM9ygo Azure Sheep remake demo has released. https://www.moddb.com/mods/black-mesa-azure-sheep/downloads/bmas-part-one-demo-released
Holy crap, I wasn’t expecting that. By the way, it’s even on Black Mesa’s Workshop so you can subscribe to it there and get it.
