• UNDERTALE/DELTARUNE Megathread V.7 - Don't Forget (about the game)

Honestly, it's INSANE how popular Undertale and Deltarune is. It's especially surreal for me, considering I saw the prototype of Undertale in a forum in 2013, and the guy was just known for making a pretty neat EarthBound hack with custom music. I don't think Toby Fox expected a demo of a game he's not sure about working on to blow up as much as Undertale IMO. Also, just Alt+Tab to fix the FPS bug. 75 hz monitors also suffer from it.

idk what possessed me to make this but its too late now https://orig00.deviantart.net/bf87/f/2018/315/a/3/quiet_people_piss_me_off_by_capnredivan-dcrredk.png
now this is lore
I made a meme about my feelings on Deltarune's ending but it's spoilers.
I need 50 coins so I can change my name to: Jevil Traitor.
tbh after susie's threat at the beginning of the game I pretty much immediately decided I was going to merc her for that shit I'm impressed at how well the character managed to be turned around by the end of chapter 1, and I actually feel a little bit bad for thinking the way I had prior- she really is just a teenager acting tough who hasn't found their place in the world yet, and it makes her behavior at the beginning of the game much more understandable and excusable once you realize that
I've always had a soft-spot for punky and misfit characters, perhaps out of personal relation. Susie reminds me alot of Kanji Tatsumi from Persona 4 in that sense, another character I really like.
Is it bad that my first thought when Susie kicked down the door was "found my waifu"?
Thanks guys.
Nothin wrong with goth girls.
METAMORPHOSIS
Personal note but I've always seemed drawn to goth/punk girls both platonically and romantically, but the romantic stuff never works out. Susie's arc resonated with me a bit more than it probably should have.
Is it bad that my first thought when I saw Ralsei's reaction to being hugged was "found my husbando"?
As a 40k and Deltarune fan, I've been completely convinced that Tzeentch horrors sound like Jevil. They're fiends that utterly fuck with the fabric of reality, after all.
jk guys im not gay... haha

CEASE.
at this point, I'm hoping that The Chapter 1 cliffhanger ends up being a troll, with Chapter 2 simply starting with a cutscene where Kris uses the knife and... gets some pie early... and goes back to sleep before we escape the cage and re-enter his body. anticlimactic? absolutely but I kinda prefer it to the creepypasta shit going around about it

Well here's the way I see it: we're done with the dark world. The whole shtick behind it was that it was supposed to be a little demo that was pretty much a 1:1 recreation of UT, shortened down and mixed up a bit. It was a little game where we take a linear path through a dark kingdom and hit the story beats of undertale, to whet our palettes and ease us into what he's going to do with the next game. It's a version of the game where everything's a bit more fake (card and board game motifs, jevil pointing out how fake the world is), none of our choices make any difference, and the mcguffin our character is fighting is completely abstract and doens't seem to really matter at all. The dark world is a fake place with no bearing on the real world at all, so there's not really any reason to go back. Kris has made a friend, had some fun, so the dark world has served its purpose. But more critically, if we went back to the dark world it would undermine the entire draw of the dark world / the underground in the first place: it's supposed to be weird. Undertale was about exploring a weird place full of weird people, and the dark world does the same thing. That's why toady couldn't set a new game actually IN the underground. We've already seen it. It's not weird anymore. He had to create a new weird world, and now we've seen that world too. It's not weird anymore. When the draw of a setting is its bizarre-ness, you really can't draw it out too far. You're going to run into diminishing returns on weirdness if you keep making games in a similar setting. Now more to the point on what you were actually talking about: if we aren't going back to the dark world as the main setting of the next game then what are we actually going to do in future chapters? We're in a little suburbia with no reason for people to fight. Unless you want Deltarune Chapter 2: the visual novel where no protagonists have to speak, then the chara thing seems to me to be the most interesting way to add the RPG mechanics in. We've already explored the idea of fighting against your own party members, this could be an extension of that. Using abilities to force your other self to miss, dodging attacks from the victim, there's a lot of interesting ways that could go down. I'm not saying "oh yeah obviously that's what Toby's going to do" because I've come up with a very specific idea for how you could implement the RPG mechanics while there's a lot of other ways he could do it, but it seems to me like being controlled by chara/whatever opens a lot of doors for cool gameplay. But I mean shit if that's not what deltarune actually ends up being then somebody needs to MAKE that game. A game where you're essentially playing as a serial killer's supernatural conscience and trying to prevent them from killing sounds fucking rad.
SUMMONFRIEND
Susie did want to try to go back, if they do go back, the dark world might be based on different items instead of the stuff that was in the room. There's still the stuff they set up with the knight too. Also, in the overworld, the menus switched to Undertale style. Unless they ditch that and just use the new style menus the whole time, I'd be surprised if we don't spend most of the game in some alt world.
I'm wondering if Chapter 2 consists of a perspective shift (i.e. to another character, like Susie) or a time jump (even further into the future, so we are kept out of what Kris did, only seeing the ramifications)
