UNDERTALE/DELTARUNE Megathread V.7 - Don't Forget (about the game)

I'm actually pretty worried what caused them to split this time. In Undertale it was understandable why Toriel had so much disdain for him, but in this universe the whole barrier thing doesn't exist and they're just a normal family, so what did Asgore do to make Toriel hate him so much this time?
For me it seemed that the monster town in Deltarune is just a 'real life'/'mature' version of Undertale's Monster Kingdom. In UT Frisk comes from a human world (which is presumably is similar to our reality) to the Monster Kingdom, a simpler and kindier version of the 'real' world, where (almost) everyone can be saved, and the impossible is possible. In this sense UT is kind of a spiritual, magical journey. You might even compare it to a dream - when Frisk leaves underground, the game ends - we, the players, also leave the game and return to the 'outside' world.
In DR monster town is treated like a human world in UT - the harsh reality, the starting point of the adventure. That's why there is a lot of misery - Alphys is lonely (and also an awful teacher), Asgore is a ruin, the hospital is full and there is even a graveyard (I'm not sure but I think there wasn't a graveyard in Monster Kingdom). From this reality two troubled kids literally escape in the imaginary fantasy world where they can be heroes and their actions truly matter (iirc during the Pacifst ending Lancer says that from now on the jail is only for dads - they literally overthrow traditional family hierarchy). Teens rebel against the concept growing up in some kind of a dream world - no wonder that they wake up surrounded by toys.
So i hope that the rest of the game will be mainly focused on this coming of age story where main characters will learn to express their good qualities not only in Dark/Light Realms, but also in their mundane lives.
Another interesting theme is control/relation between player and playable character (of course, it was also very important in UT), but IMO it's too early to draw any conclusions on that yet. But the ending got me worried - in my opinion, Chara's character in Genocide run of UT was easily the weakest part of the game. Not only as a literal plot (it's basically an edgy creepypasta), but also from a thematic standpoint. For a game that encourage you to be empathetic to other people and look past their flaws (even the huge ones - Asgore is literally a monster version of Hitler with his ideology of hatred towards humans) it's uncharacteristically eager to frame a kid who probably suffered from abuse/depression/mental issues and ended up killing themselves as one of three possible villans of the story (other two being Flowey and the player). Mental health is a serious topic, but in Genocide run UT treats it immaturely (mental issues=evil monster). But i guess we'll see how it will play out.
As for the game world feeling 'wrong' it may just be our presumptions. We played UT first, so differences between two similar worlds seem strange to us. So maybe the world is actually normal, and we are just being unfair to it because we can't let go of our attachment to UT even when we're playing a different game.
Of course it might also be a false pocket universe created by Chara as a part of their never ending battle against the Annoying Dog, but i personally hope that Toby will not go that way.
Everything about Asgore in Deltarune is several shades of unsettling, its probably similar to his circumstances in Undertale but back then he was a king with a huge burden and in a very dire situation so its kinda filtered by the fantasy.
Here his circumstances are waaaay too real. A broken relationship, wanting to be there for his kids but lacking the resources to give them anything, being so nice it's actually affecting his ability to support himself. That hug when you walk into the flower shop was so genuine, he is so pleased to see his family its heart wrenching. And while he'd want nothing more than to spend and evening with them he KNOWS that he'd jsut be pulling them into his terrible circumstances. It's way more relatable and way more crushing.
What if those colored flowers in his shop are remnants of human souls?
Just because the monsters are aboveground in this universe doesn't mean that they never were underground...what if the difference this time around is that it happened earlier, and Asgore actually accomplished his goal of using seven fallen humans, most of whom were children?
Just because DT seems to take place in a happier timeline doesn't mean bad shit didn't happen to make it there...even UT's best timeline is full of dead children.
Perhaps it could be those eggs he broke to make an omelete that made asriel upset that made toriel want to be away from the house.

BAD TIME BONES part 2: CHAOS CLOWN
I wanted to say thanks to the ones who gave tips on how to deal with the carousel attack of Jevil- While I continue recieving damage, I was able to carry on and eventually see his final attack and pacify him.
This boss truly wouldn't look foreign on a geno rute, it was difficult yet incredible.
I think the scariest/most exciting part about bad time clown is that Seam mentions he barely scratch the surface in terms of powerful individuals in the world. Pretty excited what sort of bad time is in store for the rest of the chapters.
I cant wait to have every enemy be as hard as sans in the next chapter
Found some more interesting stuff about the character creator from r/deltarune
Is it just me or would they had preferred if Ralsei stayed as an original character instead? Ralsei is like the dog equivalent of Niko from One Shot.
He is. He's what Kris imagines himself to be in the darkworld/playspace as part of the goat family. His outfit is the halloween costume that he and Asriel wore in the photograph, and as an item in the overworld he is probably the red horns that Kris would wear to try and fit in when he was younger. The name is an anagram of Asriel with similar personality traits because Asriel was the shining star in the family that everyone liked and wanted to be.
Is there any evidence about the Halloween costume thing?
I really don't think that any story Deltarune tells will be THAT pessimistic. I dunno, it doesn't feel like Toby's style, especially with the message of Undertale
About the Asgore stuff
Is not one gonna mention the barred door he had upstairs? I certainly didn't look like your average balcony door.
There's a photo in Toriel's home of the two in a costume. Between the fact that Ralsei is wearing a costume the entire time (giving the reveal at the end of the playthrough) and the fact that his outfit looks like a rather simple magician halloween costume (wizard hat with room for horns, with cloak) I think it's a good assumption.
Given that the fantasy world immediately changed the people into their anime fantasy hero equivalents, wouldn't that have just made Kris into a monster then?
I have a better theory, and its perhaps more simply that it isn't Kris's fantasy of being a monster, its Kris's fantasy of simpler times with his brother when they were together through everything. Losing a brother to college/a relationship/a job can be a really hard thing on an adopted kid, especially if they aren't popular and basically depended on that brother emotionally, and honestly the first thing they might fantasize about is both of them being kids going on adventures again, being the best of friends as if nothing had ever happened.
I would agree with you except that Ralsei was intentionally given red horns. I can't imagine Kris pretending Asriel is back with red horns for no reason.
I mean it doesn't necessarily have to be something terrible, they could have just grown apart, she realized she didn't feel the the same way she did before, she divorced him. Then unwanted gestures like the flowers could be frustrating for her. I don't think we can necessarily say she HATES him in this timeline, she could simply be annoyed and frustrated. and wants to move on. Barring evidence otherwise I'm inclined to think it's a sad, but ultimately pretty mundane situation.
Asriel as a child wouldn't have horns either, and theres no reason why Kris wouldn't attribute those horns to a 'grown up' Asriel.
It could either be that Kris has a case of something like imposter syndrome where they WANT to be like their brother but feel they don#t deserve to be like them.
Or it could be because we are not Kris, we are the player and we've forced our way into their story somehow.
I really enjoyed the better humor in this game. While Undertale's writing was great, sometimes the humor was borderline, how could I say it, "cringy" (sorry for using this infamous word). No jokes in Deltarune really crossed the WACKY humor limit for me.
A bad joke and a couple of minutes in Paint.NET gave this result. (Note I'm not an artist)
