The only reason I even have room for 40k models is a bookshelf that's literally stuffed full of models and sprues.
That's fair. Sorry to hear that man, I've been in that situation. Hope you can find someplace with a little more room to breathe.
I'm working on some Renegade Militia vehicles, but I couldn't resist painting up my Skitarii Ranger test conversion. I adjusted the basic technique I used for the Renegades and Death Korps, and I'm pretty pleased with the result.

Does anyone know where to get some appropriately grim-dark looking armored horses that don't require a lot of de-chaosification? I have an aesthetic in mind that requires heavy horse armor.
What style of horse armor? A quick search brings up a bunch of results for Cataphracts.
Something with a generally grim aesthetic, I guess. Something that could conceivably fit in with a trench warfare theme, but is also a bit grand. I'm planning on making my cavalry inspired by winged hussars. Heavy armor on the riders, with gasmask pickelhaubes and such. I have the riders already, just need appropriate mounts.
Death Korps riders are probably the way to go, there's not too many horse riders out there except maybe Mad Robot or maybe some Warmachine cavalry with a bit of conversion, the most iconography free would be Steelhead heavy cavalry.
Problem is I already have everything I need for the riders, and paying for the DKOK riders and then cutting them up to fit in with my army would be impractical at the moment. I took a look at Cataphracts like Anderan suggested, and those look like they could be close. If there was a way I could get just the death rider mounts, that would be ideal.

The armour plates from the Perry Mounted Men-at-Arms set might work, however the scaling may make the horses from that set look like ponies compared to the GW riders. The Perry American Civil War plastic cavalry has larger horses, apparently, and they have saddle bags so a kit bash between them (or perhaps the Napoleonic horses, for a bit more ornate look) could end up looking better.
It would appear that they're pretty close to the old Reiksguard models in scale, if my identification of horse models is correct for this image:

Definitely considering the men-at-arms if they're close enough. I'll definitely keep weighing my options though.
I'm thinking of getting into 30k, largely because I am a fan of 6th and 7th edition and much prefer it to 8th edition which I just do not like at all (yes, I know I am weird.)
I'd be starting fresh and I'm between either Alpha Legion or Word Bearers; since I have very little familiarity with how allying works in 30k, can traitor aligned armies take Mechanicum units? I really like some of the 30k Mechanicum stuff.

Mechanicum can be traitor aligned. They even have traitor Mechanicum specific characters.
Your ability to ally is determined by which specific legion, loyalty only affects which characters can be taken. Alpha Legion and Word Bearers both treat Mechanicum as 'fellow warriors' which is equivalent to allies of convenience. They can be taken together but won't synergize.
Also any legion of any alignment can induct battle automata as long as you have a character with a cortex controller, so take a Praevian or Forge Lord and you have access to Castellax, Thallax, and Vorax within your army.
Forgeworld takes a couple extra steps to stop people from making multi-army Hero Deathstar units. Some armies are capable of getting around it by being sworn brothers, allowing each other to join units, deep strike off of each other nuncio-voxes, cast powers on each other, etc. But the biggest thing in 30k over 7th edition 40k is that you can't embark units from one army/legion into another army'legion's transports. Only exception on this right now seems to be Solar Auxilia and Militia as they are both Imperial Army, but they can't take each others as allies.
To be fair GW FAQ'd riding in other armies transports out before the end of 7th. It just took way longer than it really should have.
Here is your bible: https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000/Tactics/Space_Marine_Legion_List_(30k)
They also have a tactica for Mechanicum, and full-on Dark Mechanicum should be in the next FW book if my memory serves right (and the book ever gets released).
I recommend building towards a particular rite of war and Lord of War/no LoW when you're starting your army, as those are the 2 main things that impact what you're gonna want to buy after you've picked your army. Coils of the Hydra and Last of the Serrated Sun are both very good and very fluffy, but play in a specific manner you have to prepare for ahead of time. Additionally, always make sure your army has a solid way of killing a Spartan, because they show up in a very large amount of games. Top picks are generally mass meltabombs, multiple chainfists, medusas, lightnings, and Vultarax.
I finished a warboss, lots of fun to paint and did not take to long given I did not get much time to paint with the holidays.

I got some Games Workshop e-vouchers for Christmas, so I decided to take a look at some of the webstore exclusive stuff. Long story short, in the next few days I should have some of these buzzy bois turning up:

I've yet to actually see Vespids on the tabletop, so looking forward to using them, they seem decent this edition.
sorry for your loss
have "fun" with the finecast

Krootox riders were not something I expected to be part of the Kroot kill team lineup.

Not really a surprise, Kroot pretty much have four models. Carnivores, hounds, riders, and knarlocs; and of the three I'd say krootox riders make more sense than knarlocs.
Grey Knights don't have that many units on the tabletop and only have 1 non-commander unit in Killteam so assuming GW would only give them regular kroot and maybe kroot hounds wasn't a outlandish assumption. Actually looking at some other factions Kroot actually have more models than several factions if you exclude commanders.
The problem with Grey Knights in Killteam is most of their 40k army is terminators, and Killteam has the same stance on 2+ saves as primaris marines: they don't allow them. Also don't most Killteams have access to special weapons? Kroot have nothing but their basic rifles, so the only way they could do anything different is to add riders.
GK have 3 infantry units that are 3+ and they sorta break the "no 2+ saves" with Rubrics (not exactly a 2+ but it's a effectively a 2+ against most small arms fire). Also at least one commander I'm aware of has a 2+ save, though said unit is also like 125 points base. And true they don't have special weapons but a T5 4W model outside of commanders isn't something any other faction has gotten as far as I'm aware.
I believe those big Gellerpox Mutants have a similiar statline, and they aren't that much of a threat, though unlike Kroot they have very little ranged firepower.

Yeah, I was looking at using them as objective grabbers and harassers, because looking at the new missions being able to jump from objective to objective is more key than ever.
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-WW/Deathrattle-Wight-King-2018 Can someone check the 360 rotating image on this one and help me decide: Surely, the paint is chipped off at the base of his sword? Comapre to the other full-size image.
