I really wonder at the thought of what the fuck could be going on at Sqeenix that causes this much of an issue. They already whore themselves out for a lot of things. Smash seems to me like a dream chance for them.
I reached a similar conclusion last night, that Cloud is basically on borrowed time. Square apparently doesn't want to play ball with Nintendo, at least in regard to Smash, and I won't be surprised if Cloud is cut after Ultimate. He truly feels like a "special guest character" with the bare minimum necessary for his inclusion, while other series like Sonic and Castlevania are extremely well-integrated.
That said, I'm glad he had a chance to ride the "Everyone is Here!" train. It'll feel weird if he misses out on future titles, although his absence would feel less egregious if the next Smash game takes the form of a reboot/reimagining with a smaller roster.
They don't want Cloud in because they want everyone to forget they announced a remake of FF7 and him showing up is not helping

if my memory's correct, newcomers/vets with yet to be seen amiibo are dark samus, chrom, snake, pokemon trainer, simon, richter, and incineroar.
nintendo's said everyone's getting an amiibo, so i wouldn't worry too much. likely they've just not finalized the designs for these later amiibo.
and side note: based on the product codes, it's looking like pokemon trainer will be 3 separate amiibo, probably as trainer, ivysaur, squirtle.
