Unlocking characters isn't "content", especially if this isn't your first Smash game. Actually being able to play the characters is. Unlocking characters is/was "fun" and "surprising" when you genuinely had no idea when you'd unlock, how, how many characters there were left to unlock, et cetera, but at this point it's literally just a waiting game for a majority of Smash players.
I know how many characters there are and who to expect but I'd still argue going through classic mode and """simplistic ai""" battles is relatively fun, the progression is nice and amassing fighters like that feels like you accomplished something, atleast for me. A goal to work towards to. I guess while I have an entirely different view of things like that, I can understand your position.
I do miss when unlocking characters felt special, that mix of hype and panic I got when I heard the siren in Melee went away completely from Brawl onward. A big part of it is just how easy it has been to unlock characters post-Melee (you only need to play through SSE to get everyone in Brawl, it felt more "personal" in Melee like the secret characters would challenge you personally), but I'd chalk most of it up to the fact that I'm just not a kid anymore. The fact that every game's roster is completely laid out and publicized nowadays doesn't help though, unlike back in the day when they were much more secretive about the roster and the internet wasn't as much of a thing yet. (you literally can't beat melee's challenger approaching screen though)
I like the idea of jumping straight into a 5v5 Squad Strike with characters I've never played before. Sou ds p lit.
For people who want to practice their mains ASAP
Big spoiler like holy shit don't click unless you want something cool spoiled near the end of world of light
"dude leave your gamecube on playing a match for four hours and you can play as mewtwo"
I still replay a new Melee save file on occasion to rush through the character unlock process again. There's something that's very fun about it to me, even when I know exactly what's coming and I'm outright grinding instead of getting surprised with new faces (like most of my original Melee character unlocking). When I get my own copy of Ultimate, I'm intentionally going to be staying away from World of Light and doing the alternate character unlock methods instead. Even SSE was a little too quick for my tastes, sans the hidden post-game unlocks...
I never bothered with the SSE postgame unlocks, cause at that point I was really sick of SSE after the great maze Just wound up unlocking them via the other means
Melee had this really unnerving aura to it that made it super unique, I remember seeing Gigabowser for the first time and feeling like I crossed a line into something forbidden and cursed. Plus that fucking twisted version of Final Destination: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_o9u93-vt2Q I don't mind the easy unlocks too much but being 1-every-10-minutes feels kind of wrong, I hope you can still can get some via beating a specific gamemode, like beating Classic with Mario always gets you Luigi and so on, or "get every character that was in Melee to get the 1st newcomer that was announced on Brawl" etc...
Yeah, I do admit the unlocks really did feel special in the pre-Brawl games, whereas now there's just so much to unlock that each individual one kinda loses its luster, plus some people just want to get to all the content immediately - I understand that, and I think that's why Ultimate has all its stages ready right from the start at least. Where in Melee there really was this whole "WHOA GEEZ" feeling when a challenger approaches. That being said, I do like how you could unlock characters by meeting them in SSE, and presumably in WoL. No "challenger approaching" battle (well, there were but you could go through all of SSE before even meeting the requirements for one), but it did feel more natural. Helped tie the rest of the game into SSE where filling out your party in the story made them available elsewhere, like you were truly amassing fighters.

You could play as Master Hand in Melee with a cheat code.
But that was a glitch, now an official thing like this.
Same for me, right now after replaying it tho it feels much easier to beat Adventure mode in less than 20 minutes, but back then it came as a shock months after I got the game. I didn't even have internet back then, so it was even better. Even then I feel the lack of impact of things is maybe just the internet existing + dataminers being able to know Sakurai's wife's grandma's blood type since release day + we're just older
I'm still debating whether getting it digital or physical. I'm always a physical guy but this is one of those games that I always want to have on me. You should't have any issues. If you pre-load the game starting now, you just need to download a small patch to unlock it on release date, unless your collage don't have good internet.
Why is the victory theme shorter? It's super jarring

sometimes i wonder if in an alternate timeline they picked Mario Paint over Dr mario as a standalone character.

The game unlocks Friday and on Saturday me and my group of 5 friends have already planned a dedicated game day with Smash as the main thing we'll be doing. I don't want to leave them stuck with a fraction of the roster to mess with because I assume the newcomers people want to play most will be some of the ones that unlock later.
With all the options Ultimate has like Squad Strike being a side-event or possibly a main event at least once, and the amount of possible tech being found, won't be surprised of Melee becomes side-event... until Ultimate turns into Smash 4 when they release a over-powered DLC fighter. I'll love to see the Smash 64 Combo being brought over to Ultimate, but I'm guess it's because of 64's hit-stun.

idk if anyone is keeping track of themes for Classic, but Simon fights stand ins for the Castlevania monsters ending with Dracula, Richter fights the Echos and also ends with Dracula.
I would have never expected Mario to be in smash bros
Probably late but crunchii's youtube account has been terminated. Sakurai ain't fucking around this time.
Well he was playing with fire, so it was expected he got burned alive by messing with it. As expected, now I'm curious about one thing on this particular Classic theme: Does Simon and Richter have different Dracula theme when they fight him (ex Nothing to Lose play when Simon fights him, Dance of Illusions play when Richter fights him)
